My boss, at a cheese shop, once posted a sign that read: "fresh" cheese. He didn't get why we insisted he take it down. He still sends out "deals" to our clientele. Whatever happened to grammar?

Good one...

That's it, I think!! In the user's mind the quotes are thought to be for emphasis, like bolding or underlining a word. If the many "literate" people keep doing this, it's job security for me! :)

That was ``funny``

Yeah, this is a funny one. I first saw it when I was playing music in a restaurant, and a young waitress kindly made a sign for the gig, and best of all, put my name in quotes. I was thinking, wow, I have a stage name!

I'm not sure where this phenomenon came from. I generally just chalk it up to increasing illiteracy. But I enjoy it, just as I enjoy the inability of restaurants (including very expensive ones) to use apostrophes well in their menus.

My favorite--Thank "God" for the Troops. The irony is that it was probably written by some religious nut.

Now, what type of meat is being serviced? Who's doing the servicing? Or - arguably worse - does the sign imply, "serving"?

My favorite is Margarita's because of the multiple mistakes (quotation marks AND the unnecessary apostrophe)!

I deal less well with the inability of even "journalists" to correctly use apostrophes (as opposed to the pervasive idiocy of inappropriately used quotation marks).

Yes. This is a correct use of quotation marks to indicate a word or words being used in a SPECIAL SENSE (in this case, meaning, "What certain people, mainly Fox executives, REFER TO as 'news'."

Ignorami typically use quotation marks in this way for emphasis where what they really should do is underline or italicize words for emphasis. I especially like the Thank "God" sign, where the quotation marks actually imply that what you expressing gratitude towards is "What some people CALL 'God'" (but what really may be chance, circumstance, or who knows what....)

I wonder if "meat service" is a naughty euphemism.

Unnecessary quotation marks are even funnier when they appear on cakes. I guess that's because they are more "personal".

Great! Now where's the article pointing out 7 unnecessary uses of the word "awesome" in a headline?
