DENVER — The mother of the 6-year-old boy once feared missing inside a runaway helium balloon admitted the whole saga was a hoax, according to court documents released Friday.

Mayumi Heene told sheriff's deputies that she and her husband Richard "knew all along that Falcon was hiding in the residence" in Fort Collins, according to an affidavit used to get a search warrant for the home.

She allegedly told investigators the incident was a hoax meant to make them more marketable to the media.

"Mayumi described that she and Richard Heene devised this hoax approximately two weeks earlier.... She and Richard had instructed their three children to lie to authorities as well as the media regarding this hoax," the affidavit said.

Richard Heene has denied a hoax. His lawyer, David Lane, said Friday he is waiting to see the evidence in the case.

"Allegations are cheap," Lane said.

Mayumi Heene's lawyer, Lee Christian, was traveling and didn't immediately respond to messages left with his office.

Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden has said he will recommend charges against the Heenes including conspiracy, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, making a false report to authorities, and attempting to influence a public servant. The most serious charges are felonies and carry a maximum sentence of six years in prison.

Alderden said authorities also would be seeking restitution for the costs of the balloon chase, though he didn't provide a figure.

His office has said it will likely be next week before it forwards its findings to prosecutors to decide on charges.

In frantic calls to a TV station, 911 and federal aviation officials, the Heenes reported that they feared Falcon was in the homemade, saucer-like balloon when it was accidentally launched from their back yard last week.

Millions watched as media and National Guard helicopters tracked the balloon across the Colorado plains. It landed in a dusty farm field, where ground crews looked inside but found no sign of the boy.

Later, the relieved-looking couple reported Falcon had been hiding in their garage the whole time. But suspicion heated up when Falcon made a comment on CNN that sounded like "You had said we did this for a show."

Sheriff's deputies questioned the parents separately on Oct. 17, two days after the flight. Mayumi Heene told authorities "she and Richard Heene had lied to authorities on October 15, 2009 (the day of the flight)," the affidavit said.

She told investigators "that the release of the flying saucer was intentional as a hoax.... The motive for the fabricated story was to make the Heene family more marketable for future media interest," the affidavit said.

The Heenes twice had appeared on ABC's reality show "Wife Swap," and acquaintances said Richard Heene had plans for other possible shows.

The producer of "Wife Swap" had a show in development with the Heenes but said the deal is now off. The TLC cable network also said Heene had pitched a reality show months ago, but it passed on the offer.

Sheriff's officials declined to comment Friday.

Among the items taken by authorities during the home search Saturday were video cameras, computers, hard drives, a picture of a flying saucer, receipts, papers, a phone/address book and a flight itinerary. The list didn't identify the passenger, destination or date of travel.

Ok because I keep telling people who are dismissing this as some kind of prank that the Heenes have a rep for this craziness.
The Heene's were on wife swap. On the show Richard acted crazy and violent. He admitted that he took the boys storm chasing and said he was glad his wife was from Japan (suggesting she was more subservient because of it). Many people think WS could have fixed the show to make him look bad. (Almost impossible for them to make anyone look this bad) but just incase they also have statements from friends. They were not taken at the same time but they all say Richard is a little nutty and controls Mayumi.
Oh yeah and there was also that domestic violence call in their past when Mayumi had bruises on her face but wouldn't press charges. And I'm forgetting the "Not P***ified" music video the boys are in cussing and flipping the bird and pretending to be Mr. Hanky-ala south park!
What is really disturbing to me is that all of these people saying that this was just a hoax and it doesnt make them bad parents don't assume that something is wrong with people like this right away. These people are psycho. I'm generally very openminded but I'm sorry, anyone that would pull this type of stunt- my first thought would be "oh yeah they've done something nutty before this."

Mayumi: We love you. Please get as far away from Richard as possible!

Speak for yourself, funnyman. We do NOT all love her. She is just as des.picable as her low life husband. She is every bit as culpable as he is and I hope the authorities throw the book at both of them and rescue those kids before it's too late.

The US Congress should launch an investigation against the balloon industry

This is going to destroy the balloon industry.

I think people need to tone down the invective and vitriol against these parents. Yes, setting up your kids to lie and using them to seek financial gain is terrible. A lot worse is done to children daily in terms of abuse. Is it in these kids' best interest to have their family destroyed and have the parents sent to jail? C'mon people, lay off the self-righteousness.

Do you think just because the kids weren't physically harmed, they're OK?

I'm NOT self-rightous. I'm disgusted by the two so-called adults who taught their babies to lie, to cheat, and to seek fame above all else. If you don't think this example WILL hurt a kid, you may be crazier than the parents.

By perpetrating this hoax, heene could have killed the same rescuers mustered to save his kid. After all, rescue planes can crash, cars do have accidents, allowing for real harm while the authorities were following heene's Falcon-less balloon. Because of the time spent chasing the balloon for that family of fools, time, money, resources and valuable man-hours were spent on a HOAX. This is a crime!

It's also tantamount to child abuse. All of this done so these losers can get their boneheaded faces on ANOTHER reality show.

And, its reason enough to demand heene and his dim-bulb wife be prosecuted to the fullest extent the law allows. In punishing this creepy pair of sociopaths, my greatest hope is that the kids are removed from that house before anymore damage can be done to them.

After all, this world doesn't need anymore self-serving, grab fame at all cost kinda parasites. You see it as breaking up a family, the rest of the world sees it as saving the children from a life of sociopath's pursuit of fame above all else.

Yeah what Ozwald said!

Also you clearly havent seen the show. This is not the only issue this family had. In fact if you watched them on the show-you wouldn't even be surprised by this. I wasn't shocked at all to hear this nut job did this. It's totally possible that he is physically abusing these kids and he's definitely screwing with their minds. He's really sick you have to look up more on him to get the issues with this family.

So, if true, she is singing in order to stay out of jail and keep custody of the children. Daddy/hubby must be in big doo doo by now. He'll take the fall for the whole stunt. we need a scapegoat for being made fools of.

I think the parents do deserve some sort of punishment, due to the wasted resources on this, the fact that they involved their children in a hoax AND last but not least, to dissuade others from pulling such stunts in order to make themselves marketable to reality tv! But not jail time, because of the children. However, as obnoxious as this was, let's put it into perspective... in the whole scheme of things there are more serious issues at hand.

These (Heene-ous) people should have used condoms. But then, we would have been deprived of such an extraordinary newsworthy story.

This is sad, but at least the mom came out finally with the truth. I hate this baby had to be in on this lie, our most vunerable and the one's who need us the most. The dad wanted attention and for sure he has gotten it, but not the kind he expected. I guess he thought everybody else has a reality show i might as well join in, at any cost. Cost, is exactly what he will have to pay, can you imagine what all those law enforcement officers felt after they found out they were following an empty ballon, that must have boggled their mind. My brother is a state trooper, and he said flavor just the manpower they used to find this little boy alone cost the state bucks and let alone the equipment they had to use and right now with each states trying to stay afloat with little money they have, I think this was selfish and only thinking of yourself. I don't know what they will charge these two with, but I think the mom is remorseful and she just refused to keep lieing. Hopefully they have learned a big lesson.

I feel bad for the children of these strange people.
No wonder the boy fell sick twice on tv.

It would be a terrific psychic trauma to a child to be told by a parent to lie.
It would shatter their belief in their own parents.
It would make them feel alone.

I hope the children recover from this.
I would wish the parents to be jailed - but that would further damage the children.
So sad.

They could spin this so much better. "Yeah we frikkin' lied through out eye-teeth, but lookit, we were doing a study to see how easy it is to make fools of the media in our country. C'mon, give us a big hand."

so sad to have your father make you lie, and then not back you up when you tell the truth....
Those poor 3 boys are most likely going to juvenile hall before they are 15.
