CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — President Barack Obama said Friday that opponents of his energy bill are disputing the evidence of global warming in a cynical ploy to undermine efforts to curb pollution and steer the nation to greener energy sources.

Obama said some opponents "make cynical claims that contradict the overwhelming scientific evidence when it comes to climate change – claims whose only purpose is to defeat or delay the change that we know is necessary."

He also appeared to be taking on chief critics like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and National Association of Manufacturers, though not by name.

"There are those who will suggest that moving toward clean energy will destroy our economy, when it's the system we currently have that endangers our prosperity and prevents us from creating millions of new jobs," Obama told his audience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Using familiar refrains from his campaign and his administration as Congress mulls its next move on the climate bill, the speech was designed as a nudge for lawmakers to act on a top priority of the president's.

Next week, the Senate environment committee will take up its version of a global warming bill. The legislation would cut greenhouse gases by about 80 percent by 2050 – as the president called for in his campaign – and require more domestic energy to come from renewable sources such as wind, solar and hydropower. The House passed a similar bill in June.

The two business groups to which Obama alluded oppose reducing emissions by allowing companies to buy and sell permits to pollute, a system known as cap and trade.

With work still to be done on health care and deep divisions in Congress over the best approach to climate change, the chances the Senate will pass a climate bill by the end of the year are slim. That means U.S. negotiators are likely to not have firm targets set before 192 nations gather in Copenhagen, Denmark, to hammer out a new treaty to slow global warming.

"This should not be a partisan issue," Obama said, urging bipartisan answers on a day largely devoted to raising campaign money for fellow Democrats. "The closer we get, the harder the opposition will fight."

"Anyway, how can there be a big climate change conference that everyone must fly to? If the situation is really so dire, why don't they video-conference? How big is the carbon footprint of a presidential overseas trip — or a presidential trip anywhere? Honestly, the man is set up to do his job in the White House, and he's well protected there: Why does he ever leave that place? Ditto for all the other world leaders. Why are we supposed to cut back when they do not?"

Obama will be criticized for not going to Copenhagen, just as he would be criticized for going if he ever did.

Per the recent Pew poll 16% of Americans think man-made global warming is not real.

Compare that 16% to the 29% of Americans who do o't know that the Earth goes around the Sun. (http://science.drvinson.net/polls)

The same the 29% of Americans who do not understand that the Earth goes around the Sun are unfortunately unlikely to understand the following, either:

1: Short-term variability does not undermine the significance of long term statistical trends.

2: The past several years have all been amongst the warmest years since direct temperature measurements have been recorded .

3. That mean global temperature has continued to increase over this period.

4. That increase in the mean global temperature means there is an increased overall energy in the earth's system, which can and will manifest itself in more extreme weather, both hotter and colder.

5. By only looking at atmospheric temperatures one is ignoring 97% of where the increased energy is going - 90% is going to the oceans and 7% is going to melting ice. Related to that: during a La Nina the upwelling of cold water in the Pacific soaks up heat from the atmosphere.

More on point #5 here:

Hatred of the Bankster Cap and Trade cynically named "climate" bill is

Non-Partisan.

1$ per ton pollution tax on carbon equivalent dumped. CO2 Methane, SO2 Mercury, etc..

Cynically, these bills reward Coal with 50B$ in addition to subsides that are 10 times all the green subsides combined. The proliferation insanity of Nuclear power is also pushed in these bills. "Fracking" (look it up!) "Natural" gas, that uses vast amounts of water, and poisons the water table.

3 cent rooftop solar
Waste BioFuels/ /BioChar

can supply the worlds energy and fuels needs, clean, safe, cheaper and Forever

So why is the President NOT going to Copenhagen but did see fit to go lobby for the Olympics? I'm sorry...the World environment is a bit more important than Chicago. He talks a good talk...but actions are not so spiffy.

ex..(just a few)
-Don't ask, Don't tell Military policy, could be ended with stroke of his pen (he is the CINC)
-Troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan (he is the CINC)
-Lead on health care...Harry Reid steps up?!
-Unemployment....hello!!!! problem here...BIGBIG problem..the stimulus was really nice for the bankers
-No lobbyists and lots of transparency....(laughter)

Come on POTUS...get the priorities straight here....you are beginning to piss off the people that elected you.

I would like for Obama to go to Copenhagen as well, but from what I gather, it is not a head of state affair. The Olympic lobbying was a head of state activity. Plus, while there, besides conferring with other heads of state, Obama got to talk to the American general in charge of Afghanistan.

An executive order would be a temporary quick fix for DADT at BEST. We a congressional vote to make it permanent.

We have enough Democrats in congress to pass the Public Option. There will be no excuse this time.

Bush's disastrous occupation of Iraq led to 7 years of Afghanistan twisting in the wind. Surely you don't expect Obama to pull the magic carpet out from under two of the worst unguarded powder kegs of modern history.

who's this guy?

There is an Associated Press [AP] news article today by Dina Cappiello, Seth Borenstein and Kevin Freking titled “Poll: US belief in global warming is cooling”. In this article the reporters perpetuate the myth that

“Though there are exceptions, the vast majority of scientists agree that global warming is occurring and that the primary cause is a buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels, such as oil and coal.”

This is not true and is a case of the media seeking to make up news.

We have already documented that a significant minority of climate scientists do not consider greenhouse gases as the primary cause for global warming, and, more generally, [as the primary] cause [of] climate change; e.g. see

Brown, F., J. Annan, and R.A. Pielke Sr., 2008: Is there agreement amongst climate scientists on the IPCC AR4 WG1?

and

National Research Council, 2005: Radiative forcing of climate change: Expanding the concept and addressing uncertainties. Committee on Radiative Forcing Effects on Climate Change, Climate Research Committee, Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate, Division on Earth and Life Studies, The National Academies Press, Washington, D.C., 208 pp.

That is completely untrue and kind of demonstrates your ignorance regarding percentages. Your statement, " a significant minority" actually still means that the "majority" (ie. the rest of the scientists) disagree with you.

As to why those studies were rejected, I don't know but im sure there are plenty of other studies being done by the rest of that "significant minority" of scientists, right?

You do realize that ice caps on are also melting on Mars simultaneously don't you? Could it have something to do with solar activity changes? The poster is ignorant because he doesn't disagree?

AP: “Though there are exceptions, the vast majority of scientists agree that global warming is occurring and that the primary cause is a buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels, such as oil and coal.”

Fumes: "This is not true"

The AP's wording was more definite that what most scientists say on the record - being methodologically conservative by training, scientists generally refrain from absolutist statements unless something is confirmed beyond any doubt whatsoever. What is true though is that, though there are exceptions, the overwhelming majority of climate scientists not only believe that global warming is real but but also that human activity is a significant factor.

Survey: Scientists agree human-induced global warming is real

While the harsh winter pounding many areas of North America and Europe seemingly contradicts the fact that global warming continues unabated, a new survey finds consensus among scientists about the reality of climate change and its likely cause. ...

Two questions were key: have mean global temperatures risen compared to pre-1800s levels, and has human activity been a significant factor in changing mean global temperatures.

About 90 percent of the scientists agreed with the first question and 82 percent the second.

Polar bears caught on camera
...
Published: 9:28AM BST 07 Sep 2009

Steve Kaslowski took the pictures during an expedition to Norway's remote Svalbard archipelago last month...

Marine mammal expert and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) spokesperson, Dr Tom Arnbom, 50, from Stockholm, Sweden, thinks the bears in these images could be part of only two growing populations in the world.

He said: "There are 19 populations of polar bears on the planet. At present we know that eight are decreasing, three are stable, seven we are not sure about, and the only one we know for sure that is growing is in Canada.

"But it is my personal opinion that the bear numbers in Svalbard are increasing. Compared with the last 20 years we are getting many more reports of sightings...

Despite rapidly shrinking sea-ice - the bear's summer hunting ground - Dr Arnbom, who has been visiting the region for several years, thinks a ban on hunting bears and their prey may be causing their number to increase.

"There is no doubt the sea-ice is shrinking," he said. "Data suggests global temperatures around the world have increased by 0.7 degrees (Celsius) on average and the rise could be even greater in the Arctic at two degrees.

"But while their hunting ground is shrinking, Norway has enforced strict hunting bans on the bears and some of their prey since the 1970s.

A small group of people have become extremely wealthy as a result of fossil fuel sales, and they’ll do anything to maintain the status quo. So they’ve undertaken a massive propaganda effort by redirecting millions of dollars (of the billions that they’re making) to think tanks, the media, and politicians. This has allowed them to control the information that is distributed to the public. It has also given them the power to control politicians’ decisions.

The science behind global warming is incontrovertible. Those who deny it are simply stalling so that they are not forced to become accountable for their wasteful, consumerist behavior.

There are also those who deny the facts of AGW that don't stand to profit from the objectives of the fossil fuel industry at all, but take their marching orders from their media shills and other "experts", and then end up advocating against their own best interests!

Usually, these folks tend to be laymen of a Republican or Libertarian bent.

Per a Pentagon-commissioned a report::

"Because of the potentially dire consequences," global warming "should be elevated beyond a scientific debate to a U.S. national security concern."
_________________

There is substantial evidence to indicate that significant global warming will occur during the 21st century... global warming could lead to a relatively abrupt slowing of the ocean's thermohaline conveyor, which could lead to harsher winter weather conditions, sharply reduced soil moisture, and more intense winds in certain regions that currently provide a significant fraction of the world's food production. With inadequate preparation, the result could be a significant drop in the human carrying capacity of the Earth's environment...

As global and local carrying capacities are reduced, tensions could mount... Nations with the resources to do so may build virtual fortresses around their countries, preserving resources for themselves. Less fortunate nations especially those with ancient enmities with their neighbors, may initiate in struggles for access to food, clean water, or energy. Unlikely alliances could be formed as defense priorities shift and the goal is resources for survival rather than religion, ideology, or national honor...

This report suggests that, because of the potentially dire consequences, the risk of abrupt climate change, although uncertain and quite possibly small, should be elevated beyond a scientific debate to a U.S. national security concern.

Obama said it himself but ill repeat, THIS IS NOT A PARTISAN ISSUE.

I am so sick of the internet right now. Trolling idiots, who don't understand the science, go to progressive news sites to shout out arguments that have been constantly proven wrong time and time again.

Ask yourselves, Why are car companies making hybrids? Why are solar panel manufacturers the richest companies in China right now? Why do the majority of other countries agree with the science that you disagree with?
Isn't it obvious by now.

Oh and believe it or not, some of us don't actually believe everything we here in "leftist" media. Maybe you could try that, just go check it out for yourself.

The government does not create jobs! (Repeat three times)

They provide the rules WE follow while creating things.

What the government does (which is bad by the way) - is they give advantages to some groups of creators and withhold things from other groups. Putting some creators at an advantage and some at a disadvantage.

Cap and Trade is an example of this. punishing, by taking money from them (an existing group) and give it to another group.

This is also a form of socialism.
In socialism the government (sort of) creates jobs, they tell you what you are going to create / do.

I could continue but you should take ECON for yourself. In the mean time enjoy being an American where we have the freedom to; create, and do, what we would like, with little government involvement, and (for now) what is a fairly level playing field. If you would like to compete; go right ahead no one is stopping you, welcome to the show, but I will not sit idly by while the government gives you an advantage over me.

From 2002-2008, the government provided $72 billion in subsidies to fossil fuels, and only $29 billion to renewable energy sources. Of that $29 billion, over half was directed to corn-based ethanol, which is itself bad for the environment.

As America falls further behind in developing new technologies, you want to deny there is a problem. Okay. But it's silly to blame Al Gore for simply pointing it out.
Man has nothing to do with climate change okay. So keep strip mining, cutting down forests, damming off rivers til they don't reach the sea, depleat the aquifers beyond what can naturally be repletished, divert entire rivers to irrigate desert for food, and drill baby drill, decimate indigeonous people, annihilate entire species and destroy entire food chains. Oh wait, you've already done that., sorry,
The great USA needs to change course immediately to compete in the world, and time is running out. Nobody wants to by American crap, that's why you buy from China, who by the way own's more of your country than you know.

The long range trend has been warming, even before the increase in CO2 from manmade sources, and the resulting increase in the rate of temperature rise.

What you're demonstrating is that even a small contribution to warming by humans is likely to have a multiplied effect.

"The majority of climate scientists and astrophysicists agree that the sun is not to blame for the current and historically sudden uptick in global temperatures on Earth...

The radiation output of the Sun does fluctuate over the course of its 11-year solar cycle. But the change is only about one-tenth of 1 percent - not substantial enough to affect Earth’s climate in dramatic ways, and certainly not enough to be the sole culprit of our planet’s current warming trend, scientists say."
