I received a Nook as a gift. I had reviewed the other two most popular ebooks, Sony and Kindle. After a lot of blog/review reading, I chose the Nook. My neice has a Sony ereader and I was less than impressed with it and had my fingers crossed that I would like my Nook better. It finally arrived the day before Christmas. After a software update was installed, I am convinced that this is the best gift ever. I love it. It is so easy to use, and lots of fun. Don't listen to those negative reivews. This ebook offers lots and has the greatest potential for new software and add-on features....

I don't get it.

Peter Svensen hates the nook, but has high praises for the incredibly klunky sounding Wikireader, a $99 monochrome backlit LCD dedicated to reading Wikipedia articles. No pictures, not even tables.

He states that the Wikireader would make an "interesting gift for people without smart phones."

My guess most people who love Wikepedia already have a smart phone....

Huh. I think the Nook is a big boondoggle. Show me one. I'm not buying one until I see a demo in person.
My Kindle is just fine, thanks, for me.

There are way too many unknowns about the device to know how it will fare against the Kindle. Amazon owns this space in a big way and B&N will need more than a cooler device to catch up. They will have to be innovative and cost-effective to get past this hype of Christmas gadget buying.

The Android OS could be a no-op or a big deal; depends on how BN plays it. You can discuss and find more nook news at http://nooktalk.net

I am not sure which reader I will go with. With Christmas being right around the corner, I'm hoping that the Nook will lower it's price. It only makes sense as it started out at $259 - the price of the Kindle only after it lowered the price twice. I wonder if Amazon will lower the price if the Nook price is lowered?

Unfortunately, the nook is not going to do as well as the Kindle.

Reason #1: Amazon lets you share your eBooks with six Kindles on your account. You can't do that with the nook. You can only share an eBook with another person for two weeks.

Reason #2: Amazon's eBook prices are way better than B&N's. Their book selection is also much better for many different books.

Reason #3: The Kindle has text-to-speech and I use it sometimes when I am too tired to read.

Actually, I think it will do very well. I have purchased one for these reasons:

1. Full-color touch screen
2. Share ebooks with anyone, not just other Nooks (email addresses, etc.)
3. Prices for books are still a lot lower than a hardcover (or even paperback, for that matter), at $9.99 for just released best-sellers
4. I don't need text-to-speech, plus I hear the Kindle's text-to-speech is pretty robotic sounding.

I'm in a quandry. The Nook looks great. But, Asus, who started the whole netbook trend, is now working on a folding, 2 screen ereader/internet tablet. The first quarter of 2010 looks like it's going to be a great time for new products.

The Kindle is a wonderful device but I believe we are headed towards the same issue of music players and cell phones - convergence of devices, which equals a single device supporting all functions. Perhaps the Apple tablet or Crunch pad will fill that need.
