I'm going to consider this purely a negotiation ploy, but if he does end up boycotting the election, that will be sufficient reason for me to support complete withdrawal of our military assets from Afghanistan. If there is no legitimate partner with whom to "hand off" what would already be a dubious "victory", then there's no reason to risk additional blood and treasure.

Don't worry. We'll pay him off so Karzai has someone to say he beat.

Democracy is a fierce battle to win. A hard ideal to keep in place. I do not have to look very far to see how true this rings. May everyone keep a diligente watchful gaze and find a renewable source of strength to continue working for the good of all.

Smarter to request that the U.N. appoint observers to live in the vest pockets of the commission throughout the process.

Boycotting elections is almost always a bad idea.

See the Iranian boycott of the election that brought them Ahmedinijad.

On the other hand if participation in a farce legitimizes that farce . . ..

Tough call.

I plead ignorance on this. I've never understood the rationale for boycotting. The second point I understand, but, what good does that do? At least if you participate you can call foul on the farce.

I would point out to our fair readers, before they pounce, that Durango is referring to the 2005 elections in which pro-reformist voters were disillusioned after Khatami had been stonewalled by the hardline establishment for the better part of his presidency. Not calling anyone dumb, just making sure you all caught the "brought" part. That election was quite 'interesting' too, for anyone interested, please check it out.

Someone should tell him that you cannot win if you do not show up.

His choice to abstain. Sounds like a tantrum, IMHO.

We're sending soldiers to their deaths for this? As Bush said, "Spreading democracy is hard work, heh, heh, smirk, smirk."

In the tradition of Diem and Thieu, Karzai is our puppet, and he's gonna remain our puppet, runoffs or otherwise.

Why bother with the charade of an election? Who are we trying to fool, the Afghans or the American public?
