Jessee Vasold, William and Mary's first transgender homecoming queen, took the field at halftime of the Tribe's game against James Madison wearing a red shirt, black pants and a small silver lip ring to applause and not much other notice.

What a fantastic public acknowledgment of the contribution of LGTB students. Go Jessee, and kudos to W&M. Any college which widely promotes equality is a wonderful choice. If my son is ever able to attend college, W&M might be a good choice. Our criteria will include programs for Aspie's, a diverse and non-discriminatory atmosphere, and cost (after all, college is pricey).

Hope this W&M "vote" is a sign of things to come for the rest of the nation. The days of bigotry aren't ending any time soon, but at least they're becoming less acceptable in public.

I'm so glad that in some parts of the country, especially amongst the younger generation, people are accepted even if they are not the traditional. I will be happy when H8te for someone different is gone.
