NEW YORK — Eric Clapton has pulled out of this week's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concert in New York after undergoing gallstone surgery.

Kristen Foster, a publicist for the guitarist, said Tuesday that Clapton was doing well and recuperating with his family in England.

The hall says Jeff Beck will replace the 64-year-old guitarist for Friday night's show at Madison Square Garden.

Clapton was to perform as part of a two-night celebration in honor of the hall's 25th anniversary. Beck now joins U2, Aretha Franklin and Metallica for the final night.

The Thursday lineup includes Crosby, Stills and Nash; Stevie Wonder; and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. HBO will air the concerts Nov. 29.

Clapton's Web site says he remains committed to his 2010 concert schedule.

If ya read hi autobiography, it is amazing he is still alive. He had to really hit bottom but he married a good woman and turned himself around. He has contributed much to help many who are in the same situation.

He is a great human being.

Agreed, Jerry. I thought the best part of his autobiography was how he overcame his addictions ~ a long, hard struggle. Eric begins every morning by getting down on his knees and praying for strength. He is a very humble, decent man.

What do you want him to do, check into a nursing home?

Of course he still does concerts. He's damned good and people like to see him.

MoreDimensions - I was obliged to fan you after blissing out on your links to EC with some of my musical heroes. Eric Clapton with Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Wow.

Bill Wyman on bass. Ray on percussion. Jeff Lynne also, I think.

Who else is working this gig that I don't recognize?

Get well soon, Mr. Clapton. You could only have made a better replacement choice if you chose me. But I forgive you - LOL.

Eric played on George's While My Guitar Gently Weeps because he said he knew George would play it so much better. All of Eric's music will last into the evermore.

Eric Clapton plays the brilliant guitar solos in "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on the White Album.

Eric Clapton plays the gut-wrenching guitar in John Lennon's "Cold Turkey".

Eric Clapton made the "Concert For George" an honorable tribute to his life-long friend.

"Concert for George" was excellent.

Eric also did some great playing on "Yer Blues" during the Plastic Ono Band "Live Peace In Toronto" gig. Come to think of it, he also did the same song during the Rock and Roll Circus, with John Lennon on rhythm guitar and vocals, Keith Richard on bass, Mitch Mitchell on drums, and Eric on lead guitar. Talk about a super group!

I hope Eric's recovery is swift and complete, so he can continue to do what he clearly loves, playing with his friends.

Clapton's fluid phrasing and slide guitar-sounding bends build soulfully in the spirit of Harrison's style ("While my Guitar Gently Weeps"). The solo is a bit more bluesy than George might have crafted, though it has the sound of a rotating Leslie speaker, which Harrison often used in this period. More than simply imitating, though, Clapton inhabits the song, answering Harrison's lyric with a deeply melancholy wail.

I wonder what Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton are thinking should they read some of these comments.
One guitarist better than another . whose number 1?. I don't think they somehow care whose number one.
I remember seeing T shirts such as "Clapton is God," which must have brought a smile to " Mr Slow Hand."
These men are true artists and jouneymen from another era, when music meant everything and there were no wretched corporate sponsors.
These guys love to play as evidenced in one episode where I saw Mr Clapton and Blind Faith in London's Hyde Park .
A true artist will compete for the spotlight but he or she will also admire and learn from others.
I believe that is what is in the hearts of both Mr Beck and Mr Clapton.
Question: How is Jack Bruce?

EngChina asks some good questions. My bet is that Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page still rock. Jack Bruce was always there. Jeff Beck is still brilliant.

Didn't Jimmy break a finger a year or so ago? That might slow him down some.

Nice post !

FYI Eric hated the Clapton is God stuff. There is a well known picture of a dog peeing on Clapton is God graffitti. In an interview he said he loved that picture.

Where is Jimmy Page? I love Beck and think he is playing better than ever but poor old Page must be depressed not playing with his mates.

Jimmy Page has a lot to answer for.

Is their any aspiring young rock guitarist in the past three decades who did not test himself with the opening chord progressions of Stairway To Heaven?
