WASHINGTON — The Florida Democrat who said Republicans want sick people to "die quickly" is apologizing again for his inflammatory rhetoric, this time for insulting a senior Federal Reserve adviser using a derogatory term for women.

Amid growing criticism from across the political spectrum, Rep. Alan Grayson said late Tuesday it was inappropriate for him to call Fed adviser Linda Robertson a "K Street whore" during an interview last month on the "Alex Jones Show," a syndicated talk radio program.

Robertson is a former top Enron lobbyist and Clinton administration adviser who was hired by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke this summer to help with congressional relations as lawmakers are seeking more oversight of the agency. Washington's K Street is where many lobbyists have their offices.

"I offer my sincere apology," Grayson said in a statement, just hours after his spokesman defended his comments. "I did not intend to use a term that is often, and correctly, seen as disrespectful of women."

In the radio interview, Grayson took exception to Robertson's role, saying she was not qualified to criticize such efforts.

"Here I am the only member of Congress who actually worked as an economist, and this lobbyist, this K Street whore, is trying to teach me about economics," he said.

Erin Matson, a vice president at the National Organization for Women, called the slur "absolutely inappropriate."

"Would he have singled out a male lobbyist and said the same thing?" she said in an interview Tuesday.

Republican National Committee Co-Chairman Jan Larimer called on Grayson to apologize, saying the insult was "disgraceful" and "disrespectful to women."

But Grayson's spokesman, Todd Jurkowski, initially defended it, saying Robertson was a career lobbyist who "advocates for whatever she gets paid to promote."

A spokeswoman for the Federal Reserve declined to comment.

Grayson drew strong criticism last month for saying the GOP's health care plan amounted to wanting people to "die quickly" when they get sick.

He stood by the comments, leveraging the attention into a series of national television appearances in which he ridiculed Republicans as "knuckle-dragging Neanderthals." He boasted that the controversy has helped fill his campaign coffers.

Grayson did apologize for later likening the deaths of Americans without health coverage to a "holocaust." He then set up a Web site called "Names of the Dead," inviting people to list the names of loved ones who have died for lack of health care.

Based upon what I know about K street and their millionaire lobbyists that are paid to schmooze Congress at our expense, that is probably a very reasonable description.

As far as I'm concerned , everyone on K street is a whore, regardless of gender.

"Former Enron top lobbyist" is all I need to hear.

Finally, a congressman speaking in plainly-while it may not be civil, its the truth.

This is really ludacris that people would applaud Grayson's comments. To hold public office and act like that, well, that speaks well of the florida voters now doesn't it and it shows how ignorant the voting public really is.
I applaud Rep. Joe Wilson for shouting, "you lie" during Pres. Obama's speech. He called the whole liberal agenda like it is.
Remember the kindergarten is up for recess next year.......vote your conscience....

I too find it applauding that you would praise Wilson and criticize Grayson. For sure, we knew how ignorant the voting public really is coz Bush got re-elected. Grayson made a comment, he could have chosen a better term but he called it as is. Joe Wilson's accusation based on lie. He was the one who lied; and he did it like that when the POTUS was addressing the entire congress and nation? That was no class! According to you, Liberal is the kindergarten state, then Republic is infantile. So, drop your bottle and diapers! It's time to grow up, princess!

As one of Congressman Grayson's constituents, I didn't vote for him the first time, but I will in 2010.
It’s unfortunate that his choice of words has distracted people from the real issue at hand: That Linda Robertson, while an Enron lobbyist helped write the Commodity Futures Modernization Act that gave us the ‘Enron Loophole’ and led to Americans paying $4/gal for gas while laying the foundation for Credit Default Swaps to nearly destroy our economy.
That loophole set the stage for Enrons spectacular collapse, the loss of jobs and disintegration of retirement funds for thousands of Enron employees and millions of investors, while pillaging California.
Grayson has the support of 300 congressmen/women and millions of voters to audit the Fed to find out where the $2.2 Trillion that they/Robertson doled out to their banker friends.
It is clear that Grayson has little respect for someone who has caused that much damage to lecture him about whether she should come clean where the $2.2 trillion went.
While some voters in his district deplore some of his tactics, I applaud him for holding the bankers accountable.
I am certain that the people whose lives that Robertson helped destroy would consider his comment an understatement.

Agreed! Linda Robertson has spent a good 20 years establishing her credentials with the lobbyists. They are paid to persuade and if she were a true economist knowingly pushing CFMA, then at heart she is a con or must have been a D student in economics.

If Linda Robertson were a man, Alan Grayson still could have called him that - and still been correct.

Thank You Mr Grayson for being one of the very few who truly represent The People as opposed to corporate interests in Washington. Those who condemn you must still be still be stuck in the 1980s and waiting for the trickle down to kick in.

So only democrats are castigated for speaking the truth, even when the insults are deserved. I haven't seen Rep.Joe Wilson apologize for his out-of-line (on many levels) remarks against POTUS Barak Obama yet. Nor have I heard Rep. Roy Blunt apologize for his stoop!d remarks about the President and for taking "Trojan horse" Joe on tour with him.

Good point. Their stuff smells just as bad as out stuff. A great argument when the video clips come out at the election.

Yes it was a good point.. yours not so much.

Or did you skip past the words 'out-of-line'?

The difference is Grayson's were accurate and truthful. Hardly the definition of out-of-line.

Populist leaders of the disruptive, flamboyant projection fringe being so familiar with K Street is illuminating.

If he keeps this up he will offend just about every possible voting block. By the way, where are all of the democrats who must support his outbursts? Where are they?

Why do you ask? Are you 'concerned' for him? :)

Erin, of NOW--could you also make a public commentabout the girl that was gang-raped? Also, how about all the women in the military that are raped - could you please talk about that, too? And, don't just pick on honest dems - try looking at the all-white, all male gop and burping up a comment or two.

What did he say that was stunning or radical?

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:13 AM on 10/29/2009

He apologized for his foolish choice of words. How is that stunning?

He was actually right on in what he meant to say. I can see where some might see that as stunning.

I never make mistakes personally, especially when I see blatant hypocrisy and taxpayer ripoffs right in plain sight. How dare he show emotion.

He made a bad choice of words and apologized. I'm stunned that isn't enough.
