White House Pink Ribbon

Nearly 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, and the White House is showing its support for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by installing a large pink ribbon between its front columns.

Michelle Obama has spoken frequently throughout October about breast cancer research, often tying the discussion to the administration's health care battle.

Mrs. Obama highlighted that under the president's proposed plan, insurers would be required to cover mammograms and other preventative measures.

I'm not sure that it should be done this year. Otherwise we will need to put up a ribbon every month and that could get tedious. The unusual nature of what it is doing will bring awareness, too much could make it commonplace and lose its effectiveness.

I don't see why the WH can't be used to beacon colors in support of humanitarian causes like the Empire State building does. They should definitely put a red ribbon, and a purple ribbon, and even a yellow one.
