David Spade Defends Commercial With Dead Chris Farley

When he agreed to do a DirecTV commercial featuring a scene from Tommy Boy with the late Chris Farley, actor David Spade never dreamed anybody would be offended.

"Slight shock," Spade told PEOPLE on Wednesday night of the fallout from the ad, which some commentators saw as tasteless. "These commercials are cool. They're well done. They're clever. And that they would include Tommy Boy in that company, I thought was very flattering."

i just hope his family gets some of the royalties and had a decision in the deal.

David Spade along with Tom Arnold had the nest and most moving tributes at Chris Farley's memorial. Of course Chris would have loved it--and he'd have loved those stores as well. Great commercial!

This isn't as creepy as using that girl who died from the "They're Heeeeere" movie in a previous DirectTV ad. Nor is a dead Chris Farley as creepy as a living David Spade.

On the whole I could say "who cares" because, really, it's not something that I'm gonna spend the next 2 weeks debating. It's an alright commercial. They've done commercials like it before. Mr. Farley's family signed off on it, and so long as they get their fair share of the proceeds, then all of that is their business. Not mine. However, would Mr. Farley had supported a company like DirecTV that is knee-deep in the warrantless wiretapping scandal via their parent company AT&T?

If his family approved it, I don't think anything is wrong with it. Plus, David doesn't seem like the type to do anything that would hurt his friend's memory.
