ISLAMABAD (AP) -- A meteorology official says a strong earthquake has shaken large areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

There are no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the earthquake, which struck late Thursday.

The quake was centered in Afghanistan's Hindu Kush mountains about 160 miles (250 kilometers north of Kabul.

The U.S. Geological Survey says its preliminary magnitude was 6.0, but Pakistani officials said it was 6.1.

It was felt in Pakistan's northwest and in the capital, Islamabad, causing some buildings to shake.

Chaudhry Qamaruz Zaman, chief of Pakistan's meteorological office, says the temblor struck about 125 miles (200 kilometers) underground in the quake-prone region, so it was unlikely to cause significant damage.

As if those poor people hadn't been through enough? It's time we left them alone to live their lives in peace. See the two AF-PAK commentaries for interesting insight.

"It's time we left them alone"

Yep, the world community should immediately cease all financial, economic and humanitarian aid .
I suggest we just hand the keys to Kabul back to Taliban, genius

I guess I'm alone here. I was thinking if they have a lot of tragedy, maybe we could help those innocent people.

Whose "god"? and, why is it that this "god" just tries to tell people things...so obtuse so the masses can make of it what they will according to their own justifications. How convenient.

Empires have been destroying those areas for a long time, combine that with what Mother Nature
does and it's amazing that anybody lives.

Whenever I have seen pictures of Afghanistan I have never seeen trees.

I have looked. But they never show trees.

Afghanistan is actually very beautiful. Unfortunately our media doesn't normally show that aspect. The Kush Mountain range has some of the most magical treez in the world.

According to the Jalalabad Assurance Co. Ltd., a fully owned subsidiary of Aetna. Of course they just dropped 10,000 policies due to "pre-existing conditions". Said Dewey Cheatham, spokesman for Aetna-Jalalabad " Yeah, we sold the policies but who lives in an Earthquake zone! Besides "Act of God"...who would want us to assist people accursed by the all-powerful deity!"

You do realize that in Islam that Mohammed was a man...not God. So what would Mohammed have to do with causing a natural disaster than would...say...St. Francis?

If only there was a major cave-in on Os@ma.....

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:19 PM on 10/29/2009

One of the most amazing things is that caves are rather resilient to earthquakes. Consider the fact that massive earthquakes have been in these regions for tens of millions of years, but there are also hundreds of caves about this old that exist. A cave is likely much safer than some house made of bricks and rebar.

Then God talks all the time. To all kinds of people. And is vsisiting upon the righteous and unrighteous equally.

Jeez, earthquakes are a constant feature of geology.
