The very public war between the White House and Fox News has produced a heated debate as to whether the cable network simply has a slant or, worse, is a vehicle for politically motivated criticism administration.

It is a distinction with a major difference. Being a launching pad for the Republican Party talking points would make Fox more a partisan echo chamber than a legitimate source of news. Having a slant, by contrast, is a qualification that more than a few legitimate news outlets share.

In recent days, those pushing back on the White House for its campaign against Fox have confused the two issues. On CNN last night, for instance, Campbell Brown asked White House Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett why the administration wasn't similarly critical of MSNBC's liberal "bias," a question Jarrett had a difficult time answering. The Politico's Ben Smith dubbed the exchange: "The MSNBC problem."

But as Greg Sargent pointed out on his blog, The Plum Line, comparing Fox's critical coverage of the White House to MSNBC's largely favorable reporting simply lacks nuance.

"More to the point," writes Sargent, "is MSNBC's news judgment throughout the day, which contrasts sharply with that of Fox. You'd be hard pressed to argue that MSNBC's choice of stories to report on is as ideologically driven as Fox's editorial choices. There's simply no equivalent on the MSNBC news side of Fox's constant "news" coverage of the tea partiers, the czars, the ACORN story, the crusade against gay education adviser Kevin Jennings, etc. etc. The point is that Fox's news judgment is far more ideologically motivated than MSNBC's is."

Here is a bit of proof.

On Thursday morning, Fox and Friends made 22 mentions of the minority-organizing group ACORN -- a consistent boogeyman for the GOP -- despite the fact that there has been no new news on the ACORN front in weeks.

"Straight ahead," said host Steve Doocy early in Thursday's show. "Congress has stopped funding ACORN after... Fox News uncovered shocking video tapes. But did you know that that ACORN ban was only temporary? Should ACORN get its funding back?"

Contrast that to the tone of the coverage when news broke, at roughly 8:30 am (late in the broadcast) that the economy had grown for the first time in the past year. The host spent just a handful of minutes -- and made only two mentions -- on the 3.5 percent growth in GDP, despite the fact that it signaled the beginning of the end of the worst recession in 70 years.

Moreover, each time it was brought up, the hosts either switched to more "friendly" terrain (such as quickly moving on to discuss controversial comments made by Florida Democrat Alan Grayson), or poured cold water on the news.

"You will hear that from the mainstream media all day," said one host. "The recession is over. That is simply not true."

UPDATE: Jed Lewison, over at Daily Kos TV, fact checks me and finds out I got it wrong. Fox and Friends actually mentioned ACORN 23 times in its Thursday broadcast, not 22.

ACORN has become a magic word for Fox--kind of an "open sesame" for wingnuts.

The entire concept of a democracy where the poor and minorities vote scares the bejeebus out of conservatives. They will do anything, legal or illegal, to prevent it.

Take a look at the links provided below by our resident wing nut and evaluate how important this issue is for the state of Nevada, where crime and corruption are practically hobbies of politicians. Conservative state prosecutors are spending massive amounts of taxpayer dollars prosecuting ACORN in a fervor that far exceeds any reasonable reaction. It's politicizing our civil and criminal court system and should be exposed. Democrats just need to grow some and hit back at these corrupt Republican hacks.

GDP is a phony statistic. A cigarette smoker with insurance who spends ten years dying from a care-intensive and expensive-drug-regimen lung cancer is better for GDP than a nonsmoker who avoids illness. Cotton, which requires chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides (as well as remediation of the pollution this all causes) is better for GDP than hemp, which produces cloth of equal quality and doesn't need all those chemicals.

The hypocrisy between how they address ACORN compared to how they address Halliburton and Blackwater is extremely shameful. People should be made aware about the different positions they take on these companies and why they choose to favor companies that profit off of war compared to non profits that help the poor.

The whole topic of conversation, focusing on ACORN and ignoring the important news of a 3.5 percent growth in GDP shows what a topsy-turvy world listening to Fox News is. One is slowly drawn into this parallel world of false narratives and before long thinks it is the real world. After a few months, one is brainwashed enough to stumble around muttering "ACORN is the cause of the world's problems!" underneath one's breath!

First Fox and Friends isn’t a news show it is a opinion show that is allowed to discuss whatever takes their fancy… and right now Acorn is their fancy.

Now how about a few facts about Acorn… I know you don’t care because they are helping people. But are they really helping people or lining their own pockets. You can decide for yourself… I have already decided because I researched several different venues.

First voter registration fraud…

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gcrrxvaNtdNU3Y7ZtDidWJe_m20wD9BK50BO0 This one is disturbing because what I see is an organization that black mailed a county prosecutor.

http://archives.chicagotribune.com/2009/oct/12/news/chi-ap-wi-acorn-registratio

Three articles and none are from Fox News.

I guess discussing Acorn Embezzlement and cover up isn’t something that should be discussed either or the videos of some bad advice.

I know that some are going to say that the fake people that were registered to vote never did vote… but are you sure?

The fourth estate will always have a slant… either left or right. We have to decide what to believe and do our own research and keep them honest.

Yes, you completely convinced me that Fox and Friends is not a billboard for the GOP by ignoring 3.5 GDP growth and concentrating on an old and irrelevent story! Did they organize any more tea parties while ignoring GDP growth?

That's terrific research. Now I can't wait for your work on Halliburton and KBR who "lost", as in disappeared, $8 BILLION in Iraq.

Concerning ACORN and voter "REGISTRATION" fraud: Use the brain cells that Faux hasn't destroyed yet and consider the logistics of getting any significant number of voters falsely registered, supplied with ID's to match the various false registrations, and transported around the states to various polling places in order to vote. Do you honestly think this happened, or are you just reacting to something that fits your ideology? The facts of the ACORN registration problem have been hashed over so many times on every political chat board on the net, so I know you've seen them and am not going to waste time enumerating them here. It's just a Faux talking point and an example of how they distort the information they pass off as "news".

It is one thing to have a "slant" in how you view the world and it is bound to reflect a bit in how one reports the news. That is entirely different than being the media arm of a political party. The fourth estate must be factual and as unbiased as possible to counter government. It certainly can not be organizing and promoting anti-government protests, nor inciting violence and sedition. Faux is blatantly guilty of all of that and more.

Gretchen carlson bothers me most. Right-wing women are especially annoying. I don't understand how she says this crap with a straight face. And the faux outrage and feigned incredulity is just too much. Everybody, except the people in her small orbit, is wrong, compromised or inept. I'm still hoping it's all an act and she's just a paid actress. Either way, it's contemptible.

It's easy to make fun of the obsession with ACORN. What is truly disturbing is that so many people buy into it. The propaganda machine is working.

I've also noted that none of the MSNBC personalities use their shows to sell books, t-shirts, tote bags etc nor do they seem to have websites for that purpose. Follow the money....
