There's been plenty of speculation about whether or not the H1N1 vaccine could pose health threats or other side effects.

Rumors have been rampant in the United States and elsewhere that it is a dangerous vaccine, spurring debate on whether or not to get it. Some even say it is part of a larger conspiracy theory.

In the Middle East, "a wave of panic" spread quickly in recent weeks after the rumor that "H1N1 vaccines destroy the immune system and reduce fertility rates by 80 percent."

Another prominent rumor is that the swine flu vaccine could even lead to death, partly inspired by one such claim in August.

CBS News decided to address the hot topic directly through an investigation on the dangers of the H1N1 vaccine.

I had my swine flu vaccine on Saturday. No ill effects. This vaccine is made via the same technique as seasonal flu vaccine, and therefore has over 2 decades of use and testing. In the USA, due to opposition to the use of adjuvants like thimerosol, adjuvants have not been used... so no mercury.

Most side effects are due to the immune response to the vaccine, and are mild... aches, headache, et. al.

Yes, some people will die or get sick after getting the vaccine, but these cases are mostly coincident­al... such people would likely have died or become ill from the same conditions whether vaccinated or not. you can also still get the flu. You can get other strains, or you can still get it in the first weeks after the vaccine as it takes time for the immune response to mount.

I really wish people would do their research before saying things against the vaccine. Avoid the nasal if you are in certain risk groups, since it's a live vaccine. Avoid the shot if you're allergic to eggs, since that one is grown in eggs (or be pre-treated for that allergy before getting it).

Flu Vaccination: It's Safe, Effective and the Right Thing to Do

It's not "safe and the right thing to do" for everyone. I developed Brachial Neuritis following a flu shot fourteen years ago. My arm was completely paralyzed for two weeks but did heal. However, it does give me occasional pain. Goodness knows where this will lead.

Two of my children had the H1N1 virus last spring. While they were sick for five days, they recovered completely. BTW, one has asthma.

Everyone should be weigh the risks/benefits and make an informed decision.

The 4 H1N1 vaccines approved in the US are really, really boring.

Why? Because the only difference for all 4 vaccines between the 2009-2010 Trivalent (3 strain) vaccine for the seasonal flu and the 2009 Monovalent (one strain) H1N1 vaccine is the strain of virus used to make it. And these vaccines are the same as the 2008-2009 vaccine except for the strains used and the same as the 2007-2009 vaccines except for the strains in them.

They just changed the strain--- which is how the flu vaccine is typically approved.

In the US, that's all that's changed. And since there weren't problems with the previous vaccines and H1N1 is made the same, there's the safety of those millions and millions of vaccinations in previous years to rely on.

You can stop being bored. The "only difference is the strain" is not true. You must have missed the adjunct, formerly unapproved ingredients that have been fast tracked into H1N1 vaccine? Listen again. You can also find information on contraindications & ingredients on CDCs site for every vaccination.

And vaccines aren't approved by the strain they are targeting! That's analogous to saying an anti inflammatory medication is approved by inflammation.

In the US, for the 4 vaccines, he only difference is the strain of virus used to make the vaccine.

And that H1N1 doesn't grow as well as other influenza viruses in eggs. That and a shortage of chicken (according to Novartis) help explain why vaccine isn't being delivered on schedule.

Everybody in the world uses the same strain of virus, A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)v. When you finish making it, you test it to make sure the vaccine works against the A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)v strain.

However, I distinctly recall hearing, reading, seeing that Rummy was on one of the boards of a company making the flu vaccine. There was a flu scare running through the population at the time. The nature of the report has to do with possible conflict of interest. Given that it was a few years ago, he may have moved on to other "opportuni­ties."
