Mercy Corps, Nicholas Kristof Encourage Book Clubs To Fundraise And Get Active

Nicholas Kristof and his wife and co-author Sheryl WuDunn take on the cause of female inequality in their new book Half The Sky. They argue that significantly improving the education and social status of women could inspire great improvements in many of society's ills. Kristof and WuDunn, along with Mercy Corps, are now attempting to turn their readers into activists.

The group is reaching out to book clubs across America, encouraging them to read Half The Sky and hold fundraising events for Mercy Corps. The team with "the most impressive record of activism by June 15, 2010" will receive a visit from Kristof and WuDunn, who'll lead the book club in discussion.

Over 400 book clubs have signed up so far and there's plenty of time for hundreds more to get involved. If you purchase Half The Sky through Amazon.com or Powell's Books, Mercy Corps receives a portion of the price.

Mercy Corps is attempting to raise money as part of its One Table campaign, which sees women as the key to solving world hunger. The group hopes to raise up to $3 million dollars through Half The Sky book clubs.
