Michelle Obama's Gardening Gear: Purple Converse, 'Hope' Necklace, Giant Sweet Potatoes (PHOTOS)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 3/18/10 Updated: 5/25/11

FLOTUS Michelle Obama welcomed students from Bancroft Elementary School and Kimball Elementary School to harvest vegetables in the garden on the South Lawn of the White House on Thursday afternoon, where she revealed how much the White House Garden cost to plant.

For the occasion, the first lady went with a purple palette: a purple t-shirt and purple cardigan with a purple studded belt, we're guessing by Sacai because it looks like a black studded belt Mrs. Obama often wears. She wore blue pants, and her trusty purple Converse. She accessorized with "Hope" and peace symbol necklaces. Check it out below.

It would be OK to wear it where a belt should be worn, too.

She's getting a darn sweet potato out of the ground. Someone didn't like her belt...they're racist! haha! Someone said getting sweet potatoes and then showing a pic of it is! Does anyone see how ridiculous this all sounds. I don't like her belt, didn't really notice it until someone said something though. I just wanted to look at the picture cause I thought it was creative and cute with the kids. Please, people stop taking things so seriously. Get off the soap box. It's a cute novelty picture. That is all.

Man, that sweet potato is huge! Seeing that makes me want to do some baking this weekend. The look on the student's face in photo #3 is priceless.

I love the last photo. I enjoy seeing the smiles and the happiness on the faces of those students who were lucky enough to spend time at the White House and with the First Lady; I bet they could care less about her belts or her sneakers.

Wow, that must be one awesome vegetable garden! It brought back memories of the garden my mother raised when I was a child. I love the expression on the schoolgirl's face upon seeing that huge sweet potato.

Stretch jeans and no socks. Hope she has some Dr Scoll`s foot odor powder.

Why would you wear socks to muck around in the dirt? And why should a bit of gardening make anyone's feet smell? Also, I usually take a quick shower after a lot of gardening, so what is the big deal?

Have you ever worn Chucks? They are made of canvas, which breathes, and they have air holes... I think she'll live.

it's your right to say it over and over and over again to prove you're obsessed with her and everything she does but everybody already knows that.

Bush quietly supported additional AID's funding for Africa, far more than any previous administration and he got NO recognition. Wow, growing veggies (I'm sure the Obama's don't pull the weeds) trumps saving hundreds of thousands of Africans.

You have a selective memory.

You have conveniently forgotten how many deaths Bush/Cheney are responsible for in Iraq and Afghanistan not to mention how many of our precious US troops were lost because of their arrogance and false bravado.

You have nothing to stand on.

george bush was the first lady? no? then i don't see the comparison.

if you want to compare first lady michelle to first lady laura who spent her time hiding out in the white house and trying to keep her hubby from drinking the vanilla extract, that's also a comparison michelle would win in a walk.

The Obama's are all about the milking the press for positive coverage. The last time Michelle went for a nice, wholesome trip to the organic food mart, it cost taxpayers $100k. Hope she got a bargain.

Well, I'd much rather 100K than the billions lost for the war in Iraq! Nuff said
