NEW YORK — A proposal for a new 82-story tower next to the Museum of Modern Art has cleared its final hurdle.

The New York City Council voted Wednesday to approve the plan for a 1000-foot mixed-use tower on West 53rd Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues.

The museum called the approval "a major milestone" for its plans to add over 40,000 square feet of new gallery space – a 30 percent increase.

The building plan by the Hines developer also calls for 150 apartments and 100 hotel rooms.

Architect Jean Nouvel designed the tower, which tapers as it rises to a spire.

Will it actually be constructed? Almost a decade and the WTC is still not finished, and the final design boring beyond belief.

Meanwhile, China built the olympics.

What is wrong with the US?

Well, if you expect affordable housing to be built in Manhattan, it isn't going to happen. This area (including surrounding areas) are just too profitable and it would take something other than greed to build it. So let's be real.

I've already mourned the old NY a long time ago. While the city can be fun, and it is the center of the world, it's just not the the same. I see tourists, commuters, and segregated nightlife. No longer a melting pot for sure. Sad to say it, but it looks like the colorful, interesting people are forced to move further and further away from the city, moving to Brooklyn, Queens, Jersey, Philly. Any new upcoming artists I know are living in the other boroughs or NJ.

The People that can afford to move into Manhattan, are making NY more like Boston or DC everyday: dull, dull, dull. I used to find NY nightlife so fun, you could meet people from all walks of life. Now you find people that are conformists, looking very homogenized, monoracial. I mainly date NY natives, but they usually are not currently living in the city. People my age are forced to move out if they don't want to live five people deep in an apt.
