Freelancers Hit With New Tax After Reprieve

Last week the Freelancer's Union sent an email encouraging its 75,000 members to go out and stump for Michael Bloomberg's reelection campaign. "Will you join us?" asked Union president Sara Horowitz, who said she'd be volunteering personally.

Another point about this tax that's not covered in the Voice article, and wasn't covered in an earlier HuffPo post: This is an outrageously regressive tax that requires a freelancer with earnings of $10,001 to pay the same tax rate as a freelancer making $1,000,001. And although those earning less than $10,000 don't have to pay anything, those making just a bit more -- say $12,000 -- have to pay tax based on the full amount of net earnings. Why is Albany so loath to tax the billionaires in our midst but so eager to tax low-earning freelancers? When are the people going to end the reign of the plutocrats in the Empire State?
