I'm sick of this fake horror and fake violence in films. The only way horror genre can be violent is bore you to death. If you wanna watch something that's truly scary and violent, try Kubrick, Bunuel, Pasolini or Peckinpah, or an occasional Hitchcock. That said, scariest film I have ever seen - Silence of the lambs.

AAAARRRRRGGGHHHH!!!!!
WHAT was scary about Silence Of The Lambs? I hate seeing actors so obviously making an "Oscar" performance. Hated it. And Kubrick? If you're referring to The Shining, I found it to be a pretentious bore of a movie. I was expecting so much more.

Granted, I'm in the minority, and it's just my opinion.

Of King's novels, I think the best movies have been "Carrie, Cujo, Dreamcatcher, The Dead Zone, Pet Semetary, It, Misery, Christine, Firestarter, & The Mist. That's only counting the thrillers. HIs dramas have been far more successful, proportionately. Green Mile, Shawshank, Stand By Me, Dolores Claiborne, Apt Pupil, and Hearts In Atlantis all made very good movies.

Not a single Dracula movie? Are you kidding??? The movie that still gives me the creeps is "The Birds." Whenever I see a flock of crows, I still get nervous.

The Shining, The Omen, Carrie, and The Innocents.

The Innocents I just happened to catch on TV while browsing through the channels, but completely messed up my morning. Psychological horrors are better than gore/horror movies.

The movie with the rocking chair...
years ago I watched it at a sleepover...
and ended up attached to some morbid ghost who followed me home and
sat, rocking in our rocking chair...
taunting me...

Are you thinking of The Changeling from 1980, with George C. Scott?

Very scary ghost story.

Jeepers Creepers.
Basket Case (although more repulsive than scary).

Alien and Pet Cemetery would go on my list. For just great Halloween movies, Something Wicked This Way Comes and Halloween Tree even though the books are better.

Sorry I meant Sam Neill IS my favorite Horror movie star. There's something very deep about how he can make these characters so real. I'm not saying he is evil, but I think he taps into the other side and somehow is stronger than it seems -and gives some of the best performances in horror movies you'll ever see. Not to mention, he is so handsome you forget he's evil.

Sam Neill is my favorite Horror movie stars. His scarriest film I think is 'Event Horizon'. Although 'The Omen' movies were very chilling.

There are two films that I've watched that I really think are scarier than the ones mentioned in the voting.....The original 1963 version of "The Haunting" which still brings an icy cold chill down my spine, and 1967's "Wait Until Dark", I've seen it 20+ times, not too scary until the final act where Audrey Hepburn's character (who is blind) is trapped in her apartment with a psycho, Roat (played well by Alan Arkin). The part where Roat jumps out to grab Suzie still makes me jump in my chair....

The superb The Haunting directed by Robert Wise had such subtlety lacking in other horror movies that it stands alone.

oh, how about Steven Spielberg's first film, "Duel".... Heartstopping. Who can't relate to looking in your rear-view mirror one time or another, and seeing nothing but the front of a semi on your a$$.....

The original "Alien" is still the scariest movie I've ever seen.

The first one was better. The little baby alien popping out of the guys stomach and scurrying across the table made me jump in my seat when I saw it the first time. The second movie I was ready for it.

Aliens was excellent, and very exciting, but for pure suspense and terror, I thought the original was superior.

Then Alien 3 throughly ruined the franchise.

My top five are "Night of the Living Dead" (the original, natch), "Carnival of Souls" (ditto), "The Changeling", "Horror Express", and "Let's Scare Jessica to Death".
