Newsday Columnist Saul Friedman Quits Over Paywall

New York Times:

So count Saul Friedman a contrarian twice over.

Mr. Friedman, who had written a column for Newsday since 1996, quit last week over the paper's decision to require some readers to pay for access to its Web site.

Mr Freidman may be wrong for resigning, but he's dead right about everything else. I can't imagine anyone paying a dime a year for access to a newspaper site. Newsday is trading in its worldwide reach for a handful a dust.

Actually, any online website that costs won't get money from me. Period.

Newsday was destroyed by the sick perverts on their editorial board. I canceled my subscription immediately after they presented their special "wrap around" coverage of the Duke Lacrosse Hoax. That they treated that disgraceful episode like a Subway Series was a sort of final straw for me.

And although I did read their online content, I would never in my life pay for an internet news service. Be it Newsday or any other.
