Legalize it. I have grown both, and marijuana is a lot easier to grow than lettuce. In a free country, it would therefore cost less and have no power to motivate violence.

This is the result of the treasonous (and genocidal) policy of the rethuglicans with their privacy invading (as always), terrorist/cartel/ciawar financing war on drugs (their own little black market) baloney.

I live in Idaho. Draconian doesn't do justice to the Medieval laws of this state for possession or consumption of this herb. These people live in the Stone Age. I swear!

Close the borders!!!

It's obvious that if President Obama can't make a decision about Afghanistan after 2 months his presidency would never be long enough for him to decide on this. Its all about politics and both parties know it.

PAST Presidents were no better on this issue. Our government Republicans and Democrats have to stop playing politics and address this now. When the president feels he has support from both sides and will not be hung out to dry he will come on board.

The indians should be doing their own grows.

People don't fully realize how all pervasive the influence of organized crime is - which is the direct consequence of the failed prohibition against alcohol. Just look at our Congress. Hundreds of people there, but few will speak out for social justice for their constituents. Instead, they cling to the status quo, which benefits the gangsters.

The banking industry is flush with drug cartel money, and having gambled it all away after making their profits, now cry for taxpayer bailout.

Mexico decriminalized personal amounts of all drugs. They are begging us to do likewise. Also, Canada would like to legalize pot.

I wrote to Senator Inouye about the legalization of pot. He replied that he opposed recreational use and legalization. No surprise there. He did leave the door open, in the last paragraph, where he suggested that Congress may need to revisit these issues in the future. Well, the future is here already.

Everyone is aware that the Mexican government has been corrupted by the cartels. This will happen here, to an even greater extent than already exists. Stories about the CIA bringing in jet loads of coke are already part of American history. Also stories of heroin coming back from SE Asia in body bags with bodies of our troops.

As the rest of the economy tanks, and corporations offshore jobs, the remaining industries will be pot growing and prison guards to lock up the growers. Feds and heads. That old

In the 1920s-1930s we had Capone and a whole lot of mob folks. Did we learn from that experience? Not so you'd know it.

The easiest way to cure the MJ "problem" is to legalize it...take the profit motive out of the equation.
It will just become a Ho Hum no big deal thing in no time.
Recinding Alcohol Prohabition didn't send the country down into a drunken disaster did it?

Sensible immigration and dr ug laws could allow those resources and time better spent going after the bomb tossers, but then the RW would have a few less things to whine about and rally the base over, eh?

This is why gun carriers with a permit should be allowed to carry their guns into national forests. These grows, are highly protected and rigged to kill anyone who happens upon them. Our government has done little to eliminate them. The public is not safe hiking into some of these areas.

The government sure as heck is going to protect us. They are too busy fighting a drug war in Afghanistan.

Today's AP headlines state Marijuana use in a legal "to buy it over the counter" country in Europe has considerably less use than the "you can't smoke that here" countries in Europe.

The Netherlands has 30 odd years of statistics on the matter. Why not learn from them.

Oh, I forgot, we are the United States and we can't/won't learn form anyone!

And the hundreds of billions of dollars used to play Sisyphus could be used to more productive ends, like health care, or education, or bigger aircraft carriers.

Interesting that the news story is from the Wall Street Journal, the newspaper Ayn Rand-cultists love.

Interesting because I have suspected for years that white-collar, suburban professional/coordinator class libertarians have been involved in the drug trade for years because it is highly profitable.

Here's what I mean. A few years ago a friend told me this story: He fell into a conversation with a young, professional, libertarian couple at their mutual pot dealer. The young couple said they never wanted marijuana legalized because it was their only source of nontaxable income.

So why would "free market" libertarians want it legalized?

As a free market Libertarian I support the legalization of all drugs because I believe it is unConstitutional for the federal govt to prohibit them. I believe that the information is out there and if someone chooses to use drugs that should be their choice. I have no use for dope myself but that does not give me the right to determine that someone else should not be free to use.

Hmmmm... Non taxable income with possible lengthy jail time? Or, taxed income and live free? Oh the choices.

Legalize, tax it and let me be free.

Legalize, and the "problem" will disappear overnight.

legalize it and the thugs will vanish from the industry. Keep it illegal: then you support the black market and murder.

You are 100% right, the war on drugs is a waste of our tax $ ! Legalize MJ and you can spend time and money on the hard drugs that are dangerous.
Think about the money that would be saved just in the court system !

The biggest foreign threat facing the US today is Mexico going leftist in 2012. A Chavez next door who will take down the drug cartels with Cuban help. To avoid this we will need to take down the Cartels before the desperate Mexican people have no choice. How do we do it? Ganz einfach (simple). legalize it and tax it. 70% of the Cartels $ evaporates and billions of US$ in business won't hurt the economy.

But Obama won't do it. So it is up to the GOP to address this present and clear danger. McCain should speak up.

I have your GOP answer "No. Wait, would it mean lower taxes for the rich? It wouldn't? Then no."

I'm pretty sure the base on the right sees it as immoral. The GOP also started the "war on drugs", you ever hear them say they were wrong about anything?

It also allows them to "act tough" on crime.
