New Business-Group Ad Has Racial Undertones, Union Alleges

First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 03:35 PM ET

A new ad from the Chamber of Commerce and its allies attacking Democratic-led efforts to pass health care legislation includes a storyline that union critics say is rife with racial undertones.

The spot, titled "Millions," asserts that health reform could "wipe out even more jobs" than those lost so far. But it does so in a peculiar and perhaps controversial way.

The scenario of a distraught boss forced to fire an employee is illustrated by a white worker being summoned to the office as a black co-worker looks on.

An official with the AFL-CIO, who saw the ad air on Wednesday morning, argued that it was a perpetuation of the stereotype that minorities have a leg up on their colleagues because of affirmative-action policies. It gets at the heart of concerns raised by labor leaders like the AFL-CIO's president, Richard Trumka, who fretted during the 2008 presidential campaign that Barack Obama's candidacy would spur racial unrest within work forces.

"This is the same old right wing dog whistle politics," said Eddie Vale, spokesman for the AFL-CIO. "They're trying to use race and class to scare working people about a health care bill."

The Chamber of Commerce scoffed at the charge. "Really?" emailed spokesman Eric Wohlschlegel, in a succinct and dismissive response.

The ad does suggest that the white and black colleagues are on friendly terms. And the overall message is that health care reform will end up taxing already struggling business and hurt the nation's economy. As the script of the ad reads: "Millions of lost jobs, the highest unemployment in 25 years, and Congress's latest health care bill makes a tough economy worse. Over $500 billion in crushing tax increases, but nothing to control rising health care costs. Expensive new mandates on business that could wipe out even more jobs. Call Congress; tell them the new healthcare bill is a bill America can't afford to pay."

Wohlschlegel told the Huffington Post that the spot will air on national cable and in 19 states including Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. It is, he added, a "a multimillion dollar buy."

UPDATE: An earlier version of this article stated that the ad was from the Chamber of Commerce. The ad is from a coalition called Employers for a Healthy Economy, which includes the Chamber, the National Association of Manufacturers, and other similar groups.

Define "Crazy".
The AFL-CIO has gained mass wealth, (Former Union President Sweeney stated "over five trillion"). They have considerable leverage over banking and business. They operate internationally at their own discretion with political stealth and power. They proliferate membership and leverage those numbers to gain political advantage. They control broadcasting on a worldwide scale. Considering their willingness to "shut down" U.S. Ports over labor disputes, how less restrained would they be in using the media to portray America as a negative influence to a global audience?
The powerful Unions represent the rich, corrupt, corporations. They are the legal "partner-enablers" for corporations. They represent "shadow" corportate operatives bending laws with legal loopholes and workarounds to overcome political constraints like the U.S. Constitution. They are the evil-spiritied, masonic, illuminti strategists. They lack oversight due to the strategic placement of union operatives. Their members are lock-step loyal to union management. They follow orders based on management decisions. They are engaged in an ongoing coup and seek to unionize the world.

The premise offered in this piece is a stretch to be sure. Only a guinuine rascist would interject this type of thought process into a relatively benign video. It only serves to leverage the race card for the benefit of the union.
Conservatives are saddened that union employees are coerced into demonstrating for the privilege of paying more taxes to pay for their own health care. This will let the large organizations off the hook and reduce the rights of all workers. Unions are now partnered with big business with no function left but to control the workers. The Unions exploit the grievances of the worker as well as the socialists and progressives. They appeal to factions of gullible millennial youth. Particularly those in Europe and the U.S. that have been groomed by the Union-led cable-news political-machine-conglomerates. Like Obama, they present vague promises open to interpretation. They offer up empty promises. A perfect deception fueled soley by self-imagined eventful futures for a generation of bored, low-acheiving, outcome-based learners with short attention spans. Union exploitation is selective and opportunistict. Their tactics are devoid of concious or mercy with no thought as to consequence. They are a ligitamized crime-spree in progress. Democrats, thirsty for power, traded ethics for Union "support" to gain power in a "devils bargain". Unions now hold patriotic Americans hostage as they double-cross the witless politicians and take control for themselves.

Fear has been used by certain people for an extended period of time----During the Civil Rights Movement, you may recall some of these------In opposition to Open Housing Laws, the claim was your property values will go down------In opposition to school integration, the claim was it will never work, because the majority of white parent will not allow their children to attend an integrated school and would use violence to oppose it.------Dr. Martin Luther King was a communist and was being used by them to overthrow the US Govt. As exemplified, fear does have some appeal, and can be used effictively, especially when it comes to appealing to weak minded people...Listen to some Right Wing Radio host. They are pretty good at using this tool. No race card playing here, just a bit of history and a current fact.

We are bombarded with one scare tactic after another from those that oppose doing what is right. Isn't it obvious that ignorance of the truth and of the facts is what the powerful and the crooked and deceitful use to their advantage against those they are trying to manipulate? It is only human nature to fear the unknown instead of challenging it or it's source. After watching this clip and others and after reading a few of the articles here, I have to say, WOW, these people are really sincerely faithful to their agenda. Plus, they are well organized and financially funded, heck even some of my own tax money is being used to try and manipulate me..(lol) WAKE UP!!! my fellow Americans. There is RIGHT and there is WRONG.

Maybe they should take the 'multi-million' that they were going to use to buy advertising space and use it to help defray the costs of health insurance for their employees.

That would require them to care about someone besides the chairman of the board. Never happen.

Non racist outnumber the racist, but racist tend to live in rural areas, the problem with this is that the Senate grants two seats to each state reguardless of population, so the racist fringe can actually have some power in the US senate. As evidence by the Strom Thrumond, Trent Lott, and Jesse Helms. Not to mention the dixicrat opposition to the civil rights amendment in the 1960's

As long as we continue to allow 18% of the population to control 52 senate seats, expect racists to have some power.

Why isn't this in the comedy section? Only in America can something like this be perceived as racist. White man gets fired, black man keeps his job. And this is racist because.....because...... Seriously people, get a clue. This reminds me of when Bush was called a racist because he complimented Obama for being smart and articulate, but when Biden is quoted as saying "I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man" and he gets nominated to VP. Again, only in America.

Clearly, you have an unwillingness to acknowledge the obvious.

Why am I not surprised?

What's obvious in the commercial is that the black man has job security. And what else is obvious is that it's all you liberals calling it affirmative action, not the conservatives.

If we didn't have racism in this country, I'd have said you are absolutely right.

Consider the source. As a female business owner I can safely say the Chamber strives to maintain its lily white male image.
