Nicolas Cage, Compulsive Spender

Nicolas Cage

The Daily Beast:

Even by Bel Air standards, the Christmas party in the tent at Nicolas Cage's mansion was a major to-do. The pool was covered up. Blocks of ice were brought in and carved into a buffet table, from which an extravagant array of shellfish was served. A production crew blew fake snow. There were enormous nutcracker men, 8- to 10-feet-tall, out by the gate in front of the house. Lighting specialists came by and illuminated Cage's favorite cars, which sat on display in the driveway. Guests at the December 2003 event included Hugh Hefner and Jay Leno, who later called it the greatest Christmas party he'd ever been to.

It's only a temporary setback. He's worth millions for every picture. Two years he'll be back in the black and rolling strong again. I doubt we can say that about the people who've lost their jobs this year.

I sure hope he can afford his health care insurance.

Spending like he did is no less a form of addiction than drugs or alcohol. He'd probably best sell everything, get some treatment and start living a bit more "zen." Come to think of it, most Americans should do the same.

In a lawsuit filed Oct. 16 in Los Angeles, the National Treasure star, 45, claims that his longtime business manager, Samuel J. Levin, "lined his [own] pockets with several million dollars in business management fees while sending Cage down a path toward financial ruin." But his over spending had nothing to do with it? Da Nile is a river in Egypt, Nick.

I HATE IT when people with twelve houses go broke !!!

Definitely a big spender. I was at his house for a Halloween party a few years ago and it was the most incredible party I've ever attended. A fake graveyard in the front yard, the most incredible food served on coffins, a scary show every hour...and many many celebrity guests.

It's not like he won't see another royalty check in his life.

Don't confuse the ability to spend money with the ability to earn money.

Hoarding is just as bad as wasting.

The thing about Nicholas Cage is he brings people into the box office. He sells tickets. People always go to his movies and he is completely bankable. He woulod never be denied a loan from the mere fact he is capable of bringing in more income in three months than most people bring in their entire lifetime.

i can't wait to see him turn into m.c.hammer. i'll bet in 3 years he'll be on some television cop show.
12:52 AM on 11/06/2009
In 3 years he'll have made more money than you could make in 3 lifetimes.

Guess what? I'm a broke loser and yet I can still afford to keep out of foreclosure. :-)

Yeah, Nick, blame it on someone else.

Right. Must be a conspiracy. Oh, wait, you don't believe in those, so I guess it must be LHO's fault.

He'll get over it; if you have worked as hard as he have for it, then what's wrong with sharing and enjoying life? Jealousy much?

Well, Nick had better start making some movies, commercials! But he had to hit rock bottom for him to see the value of a dollar. I think he has learned his lesson...

I don't know why I still continue to be surprised at the amount of jealousy and hate evident in the comments on any story about any celebrity on HuffPo.

I've discovered that the only real purpose of blogging is to vent, be irresponsible, say clever/witty things, throw barb, waste time and see how many "fans" one can acquire.

Hey, I do it all the time.

You forgot putting a photo of a pretty girl by your name so you get even more lonely guy fans.

It's not jealousy or hate. It is just very very difficult to feel sorry for some overpaid entertainers
who have either contributed nothing or appear to not appreciate what they have.

I certainly don't expect anyone to feel sorry for Nicolas Cage, which is why I did not say, imply, or think any such thing.

That's right, Mr. Bernstein.Take advantage of someone and then go plant smear stories about their wild spending with their own hard earned money. Nice going all of you who are criticizing Cage for working hard and spending his dough in whatever way he wanted. It was his to blow, not someone else's to steal.

Lobbyist, wanna make something of it?
11:21 AM on 11/05/2009
I agree. But whether you have a business manager or not, you should have some awareness of whether or not your taxes have been paid, or what your actual bank account balance is. Having more money doesn't mean you should have less responsibility for it; quite the opposite.

Sure he should be aware, but he isn't legally required to know all the intimate details of his own business finances. Being stupid and careless isn't a crime. Not paying taxes is. And he hired someone to make sure they got paid. That person didn't do his job. So that person gets sued. Making an issue of Mr. Cage's personal spending habits is just needless, nosy gossip-mongering.

He, his lawyers and his accountants are sure enough to bring a lawsuit for $36 million. And there has to be some measure of proof for the court to even entertain the charge. But we will see. Remember, it isn't the first time a so-called financial adviser has ripped off a celebrity then spread all kinds of negative rumors about them in the press. Did you read the article? All anonymous sources. Reads like the National Enquirer. Nobody, not even the kid who supposedly went to New York on a caviar run, would allow themselves to be named.
