What's Your Reaction?
Steele

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said on Wednesday that the philosophical disputes erupting within the GOP, which manifested themselves in last night's special election in upstate New York, were "phony" and the creation of an overzealous media.

Speaking to reporters after Republicans swept two gubernatorial lessons but lost a long-held congressional seat in New York's 23rd district, Steele chose to emphasis the sweet over the sour.

"The Republican renaissance has begun," he declared at one point, "and it has begun in earnest."

But the elephant in the room was hard to push away. A slew of reporters quizzed the chairman over what, exactly, had gone wrong in NY-23 -- where the Republican Party candidate Dede Scozzafava was pushed out of the race only to watch the Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman lose a seat that had been in GOP hands since the 1800s.

Steele stressed that the problem was institutional. Had there been an actual Republican primary in place, there would have been no fracture inside the GOP tent. But when asked if he was concerned about this phenomenon repeating itself (as it seems likely to happen) in other congressional races in 2010, he lashed back at the press

"No," he proclaimed. "You know what I'm concerned about? I'm concerned about is the fact that in the United States Senate the Democrats have 60 seats and can't pass a health care bill. You know what I'm concerned about? I'm concerned about the division that exist within the House caucus between the Blue Dogs and the Speaker, that are ramming down a vote that they are going to have to cast that I'm going to chew them up on next year. That's what I'm concerned about."

"We can look at NY-23," he went on. "We can look at this phony fight between conservatives and moderates within the GOP. The reality is, the country, the country, the country is stagnated when it comes to the lack of a health care policy. When it comes to a lack of a fiscal policy. That to me is a bigger concern rather than ideological disputes within a political party."

"Now, it makes for great script for you guys. It makes for great news and noise for the talking heads, for those who like to drum up this stuff. That's why I call it phony. Because it is not reality. For the person who just lost their job do you really think they care? If you got fired when you left this press conference would you really be concerned about a philosophical difference between conservatives and moderates in the Republican Party."

The impression left was obvious: Steele would have been content with any Republican candidate, provided that he or she could win. He was asked, earlier, for instance, about the need for ideological purity within the GOP's ranks, and responded by saying he didn't see the value in "losing seats."

"I'm not in the business of division and subtraction," he said. "I'm in the business of multiplication and addition. I want more Republicans going to Congress. I want more Republicans going to the statehouse. I want more republicans running out counties and our cities. Because I think Republicans do it better."

"Winning is a lot sweeter and if you don't think last night was sweet you need to go see a doctor."

Steele was divided himself. He supported Scozzafava before she dropped out. Then he supported Hoffman. Then he distanced himself from Hoffman when he lost. Steele is out of his mind.

And then he goes on to say "We can look at this phony fight between conservatives and moderates within the GOP. The reality is, the country, the country, the country is stagnated when it comes to the lack of a health care policy. When it comes to a lack of a fiscal policy. That to me is a bigger concern rather than ideological disputes within a political party."

He calls the inter-party dispute "phony" at in one sentence and then he mentions that "ideological disputes within a political party" is a concern (but not as big as his concern for other things). Now come on Mike-Dog, is it phony or just not a big concern, because if it is any sort of concern at all, it can't be phony.

But Steele can't possibly mean:

"The reality is, the country, the country, the country is stagnated when it comes to the lack of a health care policy. When it comes to a lack of a fiscal policy. That to me is a bigger concern rather than ideological disputes within a political party."

First, if he hates stagnating why isn't he furious with Republicans for voting 'no' on everything and offering no solutions?
Second, if he hates the lack of health care policy, and the lack of fiscal policy, why isn't he furious with Repubicans for doing NOTHING about health care or fiscal health the entire time they were in the white house. Finally these problems are getting addressed--by Democrats.
Finally, if he's not concerned about ideological disputes.... I mean really, who does he think runs the Republican Party, him or the totally non-ideological team of Palin/Limbaugh/Beck?

But they finally did offer a solution ... it was laughable, but they offered one.

Yup....gotta love a Republican budget without numbers and a healthcare plan that covers even fewer people.

It pains me to listen to the ignorance this knucklehead puts forth as intelligent dialogue.

Not sure why Steele is so happy. He's batting 0 fer in the House special elections. Looks like it will be Purgeville for him shortly enough. It's not like he is a pure at heart conservative, though he tries to play one on TV.

Well, if one runs everyone out of the party who has a different point of view from one's political party, there isn't going to be any ideological split within the party. But what Mr. "Fethinsteppit" Steele needs to consider is how relevant or insane the ideology that is left is. And right now, the ideology of the remaining ideology of the Republican party, which we can politely call "American Fascism" is wrong, wrong, wrong, and frankly inhumane and sick.

So if NY 23 wasn't important Steele then why did the rethuglican leaders poke their noses into it, oust their FEMALE candidate (talk about sexism), had the ENTIRE country pour money into the campaign coffers of their PURE rethuglican candidate, ensured that the media arm of the rethuglican party (FAUX and Limbaugh) played up the race as an automatic win for the rethugs, and prodded heretofore congressional supporters of Dede Scozzafava to throw her under the bus in favor of a candidate who did not even live in NY 23, and had no idea of the local issues of the area?

The rethugs MADE A BIG DEAL of the NY 23 race, and even pulled out who they thought were the "big guns" to advance their cause .............

They lost NY 23 DECISIVELY and now they say IT'S NO BIG DEAL? ........... Even FAUX NOISE and Limbaugh haven't found a way to spin the loss yet.

So we must ask Michael Steele: .............. EMBARASSED MUCH?

He is concerned that the Dems have 60 "votes" and can't get a health care bill passed? WTF does that mean? Does it mean that the Republicans just want to sit back and do nothing (what else would be new) and then have their constituents reap the benefits of health care while they complain about it? Does it mean the GOP really supports health care but, in order to pander to their ever shrinking ignorant base that they have to vote against it because "that's the strategy"? Michael Steele speaks in riddles. What an absolute perfect metaphor he is for the entire party. I say let's keep him.
