Sperm Allergy Afflicts Woman On Wedding Night

Mike and Julie Boyde had unprotected sex for the first time on their wedding night, and afterwards Julie was in excruciating pain.

From ABC News:

"Pretty much right after, I knew something was not right because I was in a lot of pain," she said. "The pain that I was feeling was inside, kind of like, somebody was sticking needles up inside of me and like a burning, like really painful burning."

It turns out she was allergic to her husband's semen and she's not alone: 20,000 to 40,000 may suffer from "Seminal Plasma Hypersensitivity."

"The body recognizes semen as a foreign protein just as it would recognize a peanut allergen or pollen," said Dr. Andrew Goldstein, director of the Centers for Vulvovaginal Disorders in Annapolis, Md. "So you have swelling, you have itching, you have inflammation of the nerve endings."

They say the best way to cure a child of allergies is to send them out to play in the yard.

Meaning that the body will generate its own antibodies.
Meaning that if the bride is not quite as 'pure' (shush don't tell) she'll be good on the big day.

No, it's a real allergy. It's possible to react within minutes of contact. No cystitis infection grows anywhere near that quickly.

Allergies are potentially treatable, including allergies to sperm protein. It might take this couple a while, but it's possible they could have a normal sex life in the future.
