If you put a dog on the cover, it'll sell. Must Love Dogs, Marley and Me, The Dog Whisperer, the list is inexhaustible and it's something that every venerable publisher knows.

And so even though "cute" doesn't necessarily play well on HuffPost Books, we challenge even the most cynical of our readers to resist this one: National Geographic's Dogtown: Tales of Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Redemption. All of the dogs in this book have been rescued. So go ahead. Try to pass this one by.

Bennett Cerf knew what he was talking about back when he came up with his perfect book title: Lincoln's Doctor's Dog. But in recent years the market has become so glutted with dog books--novels, memoirs, photo collections, care and training manuals--that they've begun to cancel each other out. What they have in common is that 99 out of 100 are poorly written and edited (if they're edited at all), and receive zero promotion from their publishers. For every Marley & Me there are hundreds that go straight to the remainder table.

It used to be that the last refuge of terminally unpublishable writers, or celebrities who wanted to pass themselves off as "authors," was the children's book. Now it's the dog book.

If you want to sell books, here's a simple three-step formula for success;

1. Write a good book.

2. Find a publisher who truly believes it's a good book.

3. Then, and only then, go ahead and slap a picture of a dog on the cover. It couldn't hurt.

Spent THOUSANDS OF HOURS trying to sell my first book on the internet, http://stores.lulu.com/eminemsrevenge and was so disgusted with the results that i'm giving the second one away for FREE [via download] and STILL HARDLY ANY TAKERS even though every literary person that has read them were blown away! Maybe i should put a dog on the cover?

I remember poor little Aristotle from Dogtown. His eye lids were BURNED OFF. No eye lids. He had what appeared to be chemical burns too. Broke your heart.

It sure is nice to see the little guy again. Hope he's doing well.
