As part of its Bearing Witness 2.0 project, the Huffington Post is rounding up a few of the best local stories of the day.

In Elkhart, Ind., coroner John White has linked the rising suicide rate to the continuing economic recession, reports MSNBC's JoNel Aleccia. As many as 24 people have killed themselves this year in the Northern Indiana region, and over a quarter of them can be directly tied to recent job loss or financial hardship. Elkhart has suffered more than any other county with more than 25,000 residents, according to a stress map from the Associated Press released in May.

One woman shot herself in the head the day after her car had been repossessed, her home already on the brink of foreclosure. "This was a vivacious, very strong woman, and she was taken to her knees because of money," said her daughter.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that the recession has caused higher suicide rates nationwide, but a data lag prevents full analysis -- the most recent national data only go up to 2006.

A little over a year ago in Tavares, Fla., four-day-old Chase Jucha had to undergo open-heart surgery, reports the Orlando Sentinel. His parents, Brian and Jessica, were uninsured, and got emergency Medicaid to help save his life. Then, as Chase was recovering -- exactly a year after his surgery -- Brian had a headache that turned out to be a tumor twice the size of a golf ball, and he had to undergo brain surgery. And then Jessica lost her job at a childcare center in September.

The Juchas have been receiving help from their church, the First Baptist Church of Tavares, whose 200 parishioners have already donated more than $1,800 to help the family, which also has another three-year-old son, Bradley. Brian, a landscaper, is also out of work. "Our desire was to be able to make sure their day-to-day and week-by-week needs were going to be met," said Rev. Tom Keisler. "They're a wonderful couple. This really hit everybody hard."

Donations can be made by contacting the church.

A homeless shelter in Fayetteville, Ark., has seen a record number of homeless veterans, reports 40/29 TV. There's been "a huge increase, and we didn't think it could get any higher," said Jon Woodward, executive director of the Seven Hills Homeless Center. The center reports that about half of its patrons are veterans, caught in the midst of high unemployment and unable to transfer their battlefield experience into civilian employment and a stable home. "The challenge is just like anybody looking for jobs," said Terry Jaggers, of the Department of Workforce Services in Fayetteville. "There's just not that many jobs available."

Peter Whoriskey reports for the Washington Post about a region of North Carolina that has had more jobs outsourced to other countries than just about anywhere else in the nation. Local workers are struggling to switch careers in a job market already strained by high unemployment and the lingering recession.

Many laid-off employees cannot enroll in a federal program designed to re-educate workers for new kinds of jobs, because their unemployment checks aren't enough to support them long enough to earn a degree or training certification. "The people in the think tanks keep saying we are going to become -- what's the term? -- an 'information and services' economy," said Allan Mackie, manager of the local North Carolina Employment Security Commission office. "That doesn't seem to be working out too good."

In Michigan, the high number of foreclosed houses threatens to throw off totals for the 2010 census, which could rob the state of a congressional seat, reports Catherine Jun of the Detroit News. Massive unemployment across the state has caused many to move away, and even more to lose their homes.

My husband cried for the first time last night. When you have done what you thought was right, and still end up having to move in with family members because you lost your job, and everthing thing that went with it. He served his country for 12 years, raised great kids. Nobody wants a hand out, we want to work and work hard for what we have.

my condolences and understanding of that pain. We lost everything including our house during the first bush recession in 2002 (clinton free trade stuff actually) but no jobs were created during bush's reign of terror, now massive layoffs and still nothing done to address the loss of manufacturing jobs

Job loss...Been there. Done that. Yep, still 'there'. My heart goes out to those
still getting 'pinked'.

For me, losing my job was one of those defining moments in life. I knew I had a
choice: I could choose to lose my way (my mind) or rise to the challenge and
follow what my Spirit tells me to do, always remembering that I am more than a
statistic on the news.

I'll share with you what I was told the day I got "set free" (laid off) from my
job: "This is a new chapter in your life. WRITE ONE HELL OF A CHAPTER!" And I
did just that! You can, too.

So if you just need a break from the doom and gloom, let me send you the link to
a FREE cover-to-cover book download...no strings attached, really!

Yes, times are tough, but it doesn't mean that we can't still give back to one
another. Sharing my story with you is simply my way...

take care,

Families have to pull together. Help those members who are in dire straits. Bring them into your homes, or apartments. Help each other. That's what family is for.

I have taken in a family member who have lost his job, and everything. He is still looking for work and still living with me. No one should be so distressed over a loss of job, car, home, that they kill themselves. Thing always get better.

Open your hearts and open your homes to your loved ones.

Family, friends and people in need in general. People are really starting to lose it and as the holiday season proceeds it could get worst. If you are having a hard time and have been for quite sometime, for some people for two or more years now. Seeing happy people on billboards, ads, tv commercials and such enjoying the holiday season and shopping, this could bring on for those suffering, depression.

Yep. I have lately talked to so many people who have been "hiding" their circumstances or simply hiding away. Many people look around and assume that others are doing okay, and it's them who just can't make it work and are getting more desperate by the day.

I am all for "positivity" but it's getting in the way of honesty, sharing feelings and grief and helping people get over this and not fall deeper into depression.

I am afraid to say that I think the layer is peeling away for many people who were able to make it look like things were okay. I think we are going to see suffering most of us have never seen in the coming year. I pray this isn't true. We all have to stick together.

I'm kind of surprised more people don't off themselves up there. Nothin' to do when your unemployed and the place LOOKS absolutely miserable all gray and cold and stuff. Seems the deck is stacked against people. I've been unemployed for 6 weeks now - with NO unemployment insurance - but thankfully I've been able to enjoy the sunshine and warm temps while I worry about my own as well as this countrys' future. I wouldn't last 2 minutes in a place like that.

Wow, you are one of those people who are not included in the numbers of those unemployed because you are not receiving unemployment insurance. The rest of us for this holiday season for the best interest of American citizens struggling to make ends meet, or to get through another day of joblessness and hopelessness everywhere across our nation.

Who are still surviving the economic crisis are participating in a financial protest by not buying into the consumerism of the holidays. Basically, only purchase what we essentially need and leave the cheap Chinese crap on the shelves. Beforehand writing or calling congress, making it clear if they don’t start doing something proactive that we can see or approve of to help the plight of ordinary Americans over Wall Street or the Banking Industry then this country can look for other ways to make up for the GDP losses else where. Hey congress, get it from the banking industry or Wall Street through imposing higher taxes on the outsourcing of American jobs.

Boycott starts with Black Friday November 27, 2009. Spread the Word!

Thanks for running this story. Surprising how the major news outlets fail to report any real news.

As an act of civil obedience, in order to assuage the feelings of despair and lividity, you may consider doing this:

send decedents remains to 1. Congress, or 2. Lloyd Blankfein at Goldman Sachs, or 3. any insurance company's home office address, or 4. the IRS, or 5. the POTUS, or 6. the Pentagon, or JP Morgan....You get the idea.

They will know what to do with them as they do gods' work!

Show your outrage!

Many are looking at corporations who pose as individuals to avoid taxation. Many are looking at wealthy people who attempt to avoid taxation by setting up offshore accounts.

Thanks. A government created artificial person has rights superior to those of a human being. It is like your ATM machine demanding money from you. Strange how few people think there is anything wrong with this. I believe it is at the very core of our problems, and yes, I am an expert on the subject.

You should also be on the case of your own party. He IS a product of _tokenism, put there to make it appear the Republican party was more diverse than it is. Look at what the party did to him in the recent election in NY 23. He endorsed Scozzafava, the party endorses her, then _Pawlenty, _Palin, _Armey, _Beck, _Limbaugh and others _blow him off and they endorse Hoffman. Some respect THEY showed him, endorsing a NON REPUBLICAN. When he couldn't stop them, then he joins them in endorsing Hoffman, throws Dede under the bus. That's why he's a clown.

Show me how he's not a product of _tokenism. Give me a good example of how his party respects him.

And, as for your posts not getting through, you'd better read the FAQ on Commenting. We had your posts scrubbed.
