Fox News Fact-Checks Sarah Palin's Coin Conspiracy Theory (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 3/18/10 Updated: 5/25/11

This must sting a bit. Sarah Palin's newest conspiracy theory on the "disturbing" redesign of U.S. coins was too much, even for Fox News -- on Tuesday night, Fox fact-checked Palin.

Last Friday, while speaking at a Wisconsin Right to Life fundraising banquet -- attendees were barred from bringing cell phones, cameras, laptops -- Palin rolled out the latest: an anti-Christian conspiracy in the redesign of U.S. coins. Palin waded into the subject by remarking that there had been a lot of "change" of late -- for example, the redesign of U.S. currency which moved the once-centered text "In God We Trust" to the edge of coins.

"Who calls a shot like that?" Palin demanded on Friday. "Who makes a decision like that?"

As Fox News anchor Bret Baier noted: President Bush, that's who.

Baier quoted from Politico's write up on the banquet which commented on the not-so-hidden subtext of Palin's speech: "Unsaid but implied was that the new Democratic White House was behind such a move to secularize the nation's currency." Baier added: "In actuality the coin's design was commissioned in 2005, when Republicans controlled congress, and then was approved by then President Bush."

Watch it below.

UPDATE: Listen to audio of Palin's coin conspiracy claims here.

When i think the politicians in my country are nuts, I look at yours. Then mine seem sane and sound.
Must US politics be a freak show?

Dear Senator McCain:

You were a POW, were tortured and endured unfathomable suffering. You returned to the United States, became a Senator, and built a legacy, much of it based on crossing party lines and fighting Washington corruption. You became your party's nominee for President, and did surprisingly well against a dynamic Democratic opponent, at a time when being a Republican was akin to wearing a scarlet letter.

Sarah Palin is the only think anyone will remember your for. Nice job, nummnutz.

This is why Congress can't get any work done. Too many HARD decisions like this one. Oh yeah, and the fact that they are off to their home states it seems like every other week.

"Who calls a shot like that?"

Well, YOU wouldn't know, Sarah. Even though It would take a whole 5 seconds to google the answer.

Of course, they didn't "fact check" her death panels nonsense or her "pallin around with terr or rists" baloney -- no, they fact-checked something that didn't cost them anything.

All so their Faux Frothers could shriek "they're fair and balanced!" for the next year.

It really wasn't worth it. Leave Palin to her fantasies and Faux to its fiction.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a couple of clips of them refuting her "death panels" statement. As for the "pallin' around with terrorists" thing, yeah, they loved citing the Ayers connection.

I don't see the anger over the death panels charge other than the use of the phrase "death panels". Having worked at the VA for 8 years and watching my grandmother go through it, all hospitals approach the family about how to handle the life or death of a loved one when circumstances warrant it. I call it simply making preparations.

Only those that don't cover their ears and eyes are fully aware of who Obama's associations are with. Why else would such a transparent President refuse to release info about his associations from college and his early years. He may be a great President when all is said and done. No one knows right now but his decisions will be scrutinized down to the shortest syllable. At that time, we will all be left to decide for ourselves.

because the inflammatory nature of the phrase has caused masses of ignoramous, angry people to freak out, refuse to get informed or understand the actual facts. masses of angry idiots storming around is never a positive thing, gets Nothing accomplished, justifies violence and threats. the right has been freaking out since Obama took office, and strangely, as Bush dismantled our ethical ideals and squatted on anyone and everyone, none of these angry, indignant, you're-destroying-our-country conservatives had a WORD to say. yet, here's this new Prez, not Prez a year yet, and they are outraged and hateful toward anyone who does not think like they do. that is a dangerous situation, my friend, dangerous. angry stupid people are dangerous.

"Only those who don't cover their ears and eyes are fully aware of who Obama's associations are with".
So...are you saying that YOUR ears and eyes are open, and you know who President Obama's associations are?
No, that's not right - because you write later that "no one knows right now". I'm confused...
If you think that Obama is hiding something because he refuses to disclose his personal inforamtion, then you must surely believe that George W. Bush and Dick B. Cheney must be hiding the truth about what happened on 9/11 because the only way they would even speak before the 9/11 Commission was if there was no record whatsoever of what they said. They even demanded that they appear together and that they NOT BE UNDER OATH.
Obama is "hiding" personal information. Now, why would B & C want to keep info that pertains to the worst attack that America has ever suffered if they had nothing to do with it...
Or perhaps they are protecting someone?

Does this woman EVER know about which she speaks? If she'd pick up a book, newspaper or magazine, she wouldn't APPEAR quite so dumb.
01:17 PM on 11/12/2009
exactly. God Bless getting informed. Reading is good!!!! She probably thinks reading is for unAmerican liberals. I'm amazed at what I hear come out of this female's mouth. never a fact, never dignified, never NOT hateful or ignorant.

My God...you mean she missed the whole "conspiracy" when that (dollar?) coin came out and many thought that "IGWT" wasn't on it AT ALL - only to find out that it was on the edge?
Hasn't she learned by now that "no media" DOESN'T mean that what you say won't get reported?
If she runs for President, the first question the press will ask is, "Why didn't you want the press covering your speeches for the past three years?"

In one year this insipid woman has gone from carnival sideshow to sideshow barker to living joke, in her never ending quest to redefine the word pathetic.

A year from now no one will even remember her name, no matter how many books she hawks on Oprah.

I seem to recall another liar who faked a book and then got exposed on Oprah as a fraud.

That guy found out the hard way that conning the public is a dangerous game.

Outside of her dwindling supporter bubble, Palin is nothing more than a bumbling clown desperate to find her shrinking spotlight.

Fox fake news is trying to prove how 'fair and balanced' they are by throwing Bipolar Barbie under the straight talk express.

They let cr@z.y eyes Bachmann fake the numbers for her bagger rally by letting her claim the crowd from Beck's bagger day was her own. (They even conveniently edited the footage into the story for her).

The shrinking tent party has nothing to worry about. Fox still stands for lies over truth and misinformation over facts.
11:33 PM on 11/11/2009
Maybe Fox is hoping that someone else - anyone else - becomes the Rpub party prez nominee in 2012.
But is it too late to un-create the monster?
11:29 PM on 11/11/2009
Oh, gee whiz, Sarah Palin wrong?

You've got to be kidding!
