PINE PLAINS, N.Y. — Upset by the treatment of U.S. military personnel, a 42-year-old father of an Army veteran sneaked a disassembled shotgun into a middle school just after classes began Tuesday, put it together in a bathroom, then held the principal hostage for more than two hours before surrendering without firing a shot, police said.

At 7:45 a.m., minutes after the bell signaled a start to the school day at Stissing Mountain Middle School, Christopher Craft Sr. loaded a single round into the shotgun, walked into the main office and confronted Principal Robert Hess, police said. Students were herded into the cafeteria's kitchen or huddled under desks.

Craft ordered Hess at gunpoint into an inner office where he restrained him and threatened to kill him to try to compel school officials and police to talk to media about his message "concerning the wrongful treatment of United States Military personnel," court documents said.

Students and staff were locked in other rooms, part of the school's safety procedures.

Craft surrendered peacefully at 9:52 a.m. and was taken from the school in handcuffs. Officials said they negotiated constantly with Craft but did not say what finally persuaded him to surrender.

Police then began going room to room to clear out about 700 students from the combined middle and high schools, who were taken to the district bus garage to assemble. They returned to the school and were dismissed shortly after 2 p.m., about the time they are normally released.

No one was injured.

Craft, wearing black jeans and a black T-shirt with an image of a pirate ship on the back at his arraignment, told a judge he was depressed and needed psychiatric care.

Story continues below

"Jail is not the place I need to be," Craft told Pine Plains Town Justice Louis Imperato. The judge didn't respond to his request for psychiatric care.

Craft has two sons who had attended the school, but school officials said neither was currently enrolled.

Craft's elder son, also named Christopher, was a motor transportation operator in the Army from December 2006 through June 2009, the Department of Defense confirmed Tuesday evening.

Craft, who went to school in the district, was charged with first-degree kidnapping and also faces charges of criminal possession of a weapon and criminal trespassing.

Craft didn't enter a plea at his arraignment. A public defender will be assigned before his next court appearance Dec. 2.

One student, seventh-grader Zach Pruner, said he was in the counselor's office in the next room when Craft walked in and began arguing with administrators. He began cursing and talked about being frustrated and confused, Zach said.

"I could hear him in the next room," he said. "I was frozen with fear."

Zach said he hid under a desk for the next two hours. He jumped out a window after getting the attention of the SWAT team by waving his arm, and he held up a sign that said "One guy with gun and four people inside."

Police and school officials didn't single out any student's actions, saying they followed the proper procedures during the standoff.

Classes began around 7:30 a.m. and Craft walked in a few minutes later, checking in with a receptionist as required, according to Pine Plains Schools Superintendent Linda Kaumeyer. He asked to use the bathroom, where he put the shotgun back together, loaded it with one round and headed into the main office, police said.

Hess was the psychologist at the school before becoming principal, said Gregg Pulver, superintendent of Pine Plains, a town about 90 miles north of New York City.

"He has a great way of handling people, thank God," he said.

The school was to be closed Wednesday to observe Veterans Day, but Kaumeyer said she would consider opening it to provide counseling.

Parents were told to gather in a parking lot at a restaurant a couple of blocks from school. Hundreds of people, including parents and other townspeople, were milling around an intersection near the school, which sits in a rural valley amid rolling hills.

Pine Plains has about 2,400 residents. The school district is the one-stoplight town's largest employer, Pulver said.

Police said Craft had a prior misdemeanor conviction, but they would not release details. He was also shot in the shoulder in 2000 during a dispute over stolen property.

I suppose the solution is sacrifice everyone's personal liberty for the hope of security.

History has taught that when any society chooses to go the route they gain neither liberty or security, you get iron fisted despotism.

American exceptionalism is no match for historical lessons.

Where is the end of this slippery slope if we continue down this path of nannying by the well-intentioned and the government?

I see that heart disease kills 550,000 a year, ban all meat and salt?
I see that automobile accidents claim 50,000 a year, no more driving?

Where is the line? I wonder why guns are always singled out in this country? There are some 20,000 murders in this country a year and only 50% are committed with firearms on average, that's still about 10,000 murders a year on average committed by other means.

The problem is not gun laws, it is socio-economic mainly. We are a nation of declining standards, losing common morality and a nation of broken and divided homes that has seen real wage stagnate and decrease and opportunity dry up for generations now. Address the underlying issues.

You can not remove all risk from the world but what you can remove is all freedom if you so choose. My freedoms are supposedly inalienable and not determined by the actions of a few or the vote of a majority. It is UnAmerican to have my rights stripped as a gun owner because of criminals or what do-gooders believe.

Also it seems to me some of the most peaceful era in American history was when we had virtually no restrictions on guns or for instance, when we actually taught our children in schools things such as gun safety and marksmanship.... it was common place up until the 1970s-1980 for vitrually every school in America to have shooting and archery classes... but instead, now we teach kids intrigue over guns, not respect and proper use. It has caused no decline in shootings... this guns in schools stuff began after gun bans and supposed "awareness" about the dangers of guns. Blaming the implement of the crime and not the motive really misses the mark... I guess we would all be more satisfied if we were blowing people up with homemade bombs, stabbing each other or pushing folks out the windows.

Additionally, the correlation between violence is not how strict the gun laws are, it is economic and social conditions that effect the crime wait, not access to a particular weapon. In the U.K. for instance, they banned hand guns, violent crime went up as well as stabbings... the solution by the do-gooders and politicians is now to knives, I kid you not. The Ft. Hood shooter... is anyone claiming that an extemist of any degree could not commit a heinous act with a home made explosive? Finally, if we were to chart crime statistics in the US relative to era, again, you will see crime rises in times of economic turmoil and social unrest, such as in the 1930's, the turbulent 1960 - 1970's Vietnam era and declines rapidly in eras such as the 1990's when economic egalitarianism ruled the day. So there is no statistical correlation between gun laws and crime except a negative correlation (i.e. crime usually rises after the enactment of said laws).

Well I am sure this is an exercise in futility in that with a debate on gun laws people are so very entrenched in emotional based arguments that things like facts, examples and statistics can not get in the way of their opinions. I am under no delusions that I will dislodge anyone from their beliefs but I am going to attempt to make an argument based upon verifiable statistics and empiricism, not just what I feel. Pick a city, town or country that has enacted strict gun laws (maybe D.C., Chicago, U.K. Australia) and you will always see a common thread. This thread is that depite the political promises and hopeful thinking claims, violent crime always rises after enacting bans. The correlation between violent crime and gun laws is a negative correlation. The reason should be simple enough that basic human common sense can tell you why. You are only disarming law abiding people any way. You are making people less defended against people choosing to do harm. It is analagous to a criminal walking up to two houses of similar value and one has an ADT Security System sign in the front yard and the other does not, which is going to be more likely to be a target of robbery?

I was mad that the news stations didn't continue the coverage, even though there was nothing else critical going on.

I'm glad it all worked out today. The way things have been going lately, you guys came out the lucky ones.

Hope all continues to be well with all of the students and faculty.

The common link with the shooter at Fort Hood and the Cleveland serial killer is that they both were Government trained to kill people, and they did. Both were military trained. This guy didn't shoot anyone but might have had a loved one in the military. If it turns out he was also military, that would be something.
There seems to be a common theme around the military.

It is news if
a. you work in that school
b, you have someone in the school
c. you live in the town
d. you live in NY
e. you know this can happen anywhere

interesting that the gunman is called a "former student"
one of my former students happens to teach in that school
but was home sick today

crazies come in all shapes and colors..all religions...small towns, big cities, army bases
the question is: how do we protect ourselves and our kids from them?

Other than the drunk airline pilot being arrested ON the plane today, YES, this would be classified as breaking news. Everyone doesn't get the news at the same time. Believe it or not, some people, somewhere, have not heard this story yet.

I hadn't assumed he was caucasian. Actually it never occurred to me one way or the other. I'm not criticizing, I'm just curious. Do you know he's white, or are you guessing? lol

I know I made that assumption. I also assumed it was a man. It's probably wrong to make that assumption but I read the headline and thought, "white guy." That he's 40 is a surprise.

One major lesson with crime and the media: They ALWAYS immediately or quickly put up a picture of the criminal with the story if he/she is black, Hispanic, or another minority. If the criminal is white, they either wait before showing a picture, or they don't show one at all.

A country where any wacko can get all the guns and ammunition he needs (almost always a he) to create all the mayhem he wants.

Once again we see the outcome of lax gun laws in this country.
It's a violent hearted nation killing itself off.

If it was not a gun it would have been something else. The motive behind the act is what concerns me. Why did he (or any other "gunman" for that matter) feel the need to act in such a manner? Perhaps if we weren't so isolated in our electronic communities and actually spoke with our family, friends, and neighbors instead of letting things fester, encouraged by faceless people, these things may not happen. Maybe they would, but the gun is the tool, not the reason.

I don't know how anyone can make ANY assumptions on this story. It's so bizarre. There's a reason "going postal" is called going postal. There is no precedent for a 40 y/o guy to go back to his old school and hold the principal hostage. Was the principle the same one from 20 yrs ago? Did the school put something on his permanent record that ruined his life? I can't wait to hear what this is about.

I just realized that I used both versions of the word principal. In my own defense, the second usage is still grammatically correct, if I was responding to a different comment. Grammar nerd power activated!
