The Associated Press:

The Mormon church for the first time has announced its support of gay rights legislation, an endorsement that helped gain unanimous approval for Salt Lake city laws banning discrimination against gays in housing and employment.

The Utah-based church's support ahead of Tuesday night's vote came despite its steadfast opposition to gay marriage, reflected in the high-profile role it played last year in California's Proposition 8 ballot measure that barred such unions.

not so fast, they have an opposition group which will have the law overturn. The mormon church just wanted to have an appearance of being tolerant, while they send in others from behind to put the brakes to it.

why is religion dictating policy? Get religion out of all this! As a straight woman I find it appalling this is happening, its discrimination by religion threw the government. Equal rights to all people in America, freedom of religion and freedom from religion.
I think Python signs like "Help I'm being Oppressed !" might do it, because the church has really taken over.

It is time for a Financial (and more) REVOLT for Catholics and Mormons... PLEASE! Stop paying tithing and into collection plates, to both Organization and this includes many Evangelical Churches...

These Church's are spending money and time attempting to undermine the Constitution... These Church's do NOT believe in Constitutional EQUALITY... Both are organized in the concept of an External, white, male, GOD, as a Supreme Being and Supreme Authority... ALL supported by Religious "Authority" of course!

If you are first and foremost a Patriot and your Religion is Freedom of choice, then Constitutional EQUALITY will be supported... If instead, you are a Religionist, then the Rule of Law and Constitution becomes secondary to Personal Beliefs and Agenda... Being a Citizens does NOT make anyone a Patriot and we have people serving in the Military who are Patriots and seek to become Citizens...

Patriot: : one who loves his or her country and supports its authority and interests (Miriam Webster)

To attempt to block Equality and or take EQUALITY away from others is one of those Road to Hell paving blocks... This is NOT about Gay/ Straight, or Left Wing/ Right Wing, or Religious/ non-religious... This is Agenda driven CONTROL of others... An arrogant, superiority, ego belief, couch and supported by Religious Hierarchy......

Gay marriage should be legal, so should be polygamy.

Completely unconnected issues.

There is no sexual orientation for multiple spouses.

What we're talking about is the human right of gay people to get married. Whether or not gay and hetero people have the options of incest, polygamy, and various forms of sexual behavior independent of sexual orientation is utterly irrelevant.

Obviously, there is a point of view that sees both of these issues that deal with the choice to enter into the marriage of your choice, if it's voluntary, consensual, legally pursue by a group of people who think is also their right and who commit no wrong beyond wanting to be marry to one or more human beings.

A reasonable legal point of view, that go beyond a moralistic stand, I see no difference in the right of gay people to enter into marriage than that of polygamist to want to do the same.

And I'm not either one.

Yes, his comment veers off the topic, but I do think they are both constitutional/civil rights issues though.
Yes, the Gay marriage issue has the added component of gender identification/rights.

I would like both groups to have the rights to exist and practice openly.

(I don't want to hear from those who think illegal behavior only exists in multiple marriage groups)

so I guess we can forgive "them" for spending $5 MILLION and sending thousands of "volunteers" to fight CALIFORNIA'S Prop 8? . . . . I don't think so.

This is a PR move that will gently "disapear" when the "law" comes before the LDS controlled Utah courts . . . .

A nice "start" would be fro the "high priests" or whatever to PUBLICLY announce the LDS CHURCH unconditionally supports EQUAL RIGHTS for ALL, regardless of race, color or sexual orientation. . . .

Sounds like the bad press from Prop 8 has hit them hard!

And hey - it's not gay marriage, but it is something right - no reason to beat them up over that.
