What's Your Reaction?

Thousands of American men and women have lost their lives in the Global War on Terror since it began in 2001. For the loved ones left behind, the MySpace and Facebook pages of those who died often serve an online memorial that can be pored over and added to indefinitely. Messages to the dead stream in on birthdays and holidays like Veterans Day or the Fourth of July, testifying that lives at home are irreparably changed by what happens in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Please take a look at this site: http://www.peer2.com/PSMgTm

Its free to join and you earn points toward free stuff for having friends sign up, but that shouldnt be your only reason for doing it. They are trying to get 111,111 signatures by New Years... The initial goal was Veterans Day, which didn't happen... Whats wrong with people? So any and all help would be both significant and appreciated!

Every now and then I peruse this now almost forgotten site. Kudos to CNN for still maintaining it.

What a day, remembrance day...my Nephew made it back from Afghanistan, I feel so grateful. Prayers for our American Brothers who didn't...

Here is a video tribute of fallen Canadian Soldiers from Afghanistan. Canadians have a tradition of welcoming the fallen home, with flags, applause and tears, while lining the 401 and bridges. It is a must see...

My nephew just signed up. He is 22 and has 1 kid and 1 on the way. His dad, my brother, was in the Navy. My nephew needed something to direct his life. He wasn't doing a darn thing with it as it was. He'll be a man through his experiences in the military. I'm proud of him for signing up and scared for him at the same time.

I get a little irritated by the neo cons, on other blogs, that make lite of this sacrifice. I served and made it to retirement. I meet up with a few Iraqi vets who have some health problems.
A lot of civilians think all vets get free healthcare, that's not true. One person said that service members who volunteer and become "disposable" because that's what soldiers are for.
Maybe politicians think that way. I know that, to their families, friends and fellow soldiers, that's not true.
Many hate mongers enjoy the freedoms they have due to those who are willing to freely serve.
Here is a piece of the St Crispin speech given by Henry V, by Shakespeare it's just a speech I've always enjoyed:

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day

Wow.

Hey, everybody doesn't think like the neocons. Most of us are grateful for our soldiers and their service. I take nothing for granted. My BF is retired Army Special Forces and my best friend is current Army Reserve who recently came back from Iraq and now has PTSD. My nephew just joined up and goes to boot camp in January and I'm both proud of him and scared for him.

I am grateful for the service of any man or woman who serves our country in our military. Thank you and every man and woman who ever gave their time, or their life, for all of us.

I believe that those who make light of the sacrifice by our fallen men and women are very much the exception. Most people very much appreciate and revere our soldiers who have died or were hurt in the line of duty. The slideshow of the MySpace memorials is a very emotional and stark reminder to all of us of the personal lives and the humanity of our fallen soldiers.

I hope you also know about and will acknowledge the regular blog on Daily Kos called "I Got The News Today (IGTNT). For every person who dies in service, they post a biography, pictures, and other news, that bring the names to life.

Commenters leave heartfelt support and wishes for the survivors and loved ones. It's a dignified and solemn blog, posted with the hopes that when loved ones search the web for information on their loss, this tribute will honor them and show that people really do care about their sacrifices.

I was at a meeting today of nearly thirty people ages 25-70. All vets. were asked to raise their hands to receive a round of appreciation. I was appalled when only five of us raised our hands. It was the case only thirty years ago at least half of those present would have raised their hands. It does not speak well to the idea of patriotic service. I guess it's just too dangerous for most of these people.

These young men volunteer. While the country is dividing over whether we should be in Afghanistan, they keep volunteering. My son was in the military within month of his graduation. He is only 19, been to Afghanistan once, and will return within the next 4 months. I spent several days with him after his return. He sees this as a "duty" as is ready to return. He is not of course looking at this in geopolitical terms, but he has a zeal to serve that I both respect and dread. Regardless of how one feels about US involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, we can honor these men and woman who put everything on the line on behalf of their country.

Take a veteran (or 2) to dinner (or make a date for this weekend).

We take my son out to dinner every year as a small thank you for his service (Navy, USS Rhode Island nuke sub, '95 to '01).
