Maybe if the US would flog a few drunk drivers they'd save lives.
By world standards the US is very lax on DUI, both in legal level and punishment.
Here in Moldova, which has one of the highest alcohol consumption rates, the legal limit is .03 With mandantory jail time. Having seen the outside of the jails, I'd take the beating rather than see the inside.
(Giving the news a positive spin) At least, Stephen Worgu is going to get it for free – in the West, people pay (young ladies and madams) for that sort of thing.
as usual the tiny 3 sentence summary is misleading. he is being flogged for driving while drunk. half the punishment is for drinking (when he knew he would drive) the other for driving. however, had he just been drinking he would not have been punished as it is not illegal for non muslims to drink.
What does it matter? The punishment most certainly does not suit the crime...ba
Honestly, when our prisons are bursting at the seams with people doing long terms for drug offenses, with so many incidences of capital punishment being inflicted on innocent men, it seems to me that we might be more circumspect about judging other legal systems, especially on the basis of scanty information.
But yet even with this barbaric punishment, he still committed the crime knowing full well what would happen.
I disagree with flogging, btw. I just think that people make their own choices when it comes to committing a crime and should pay whatever penalty is in place.
If we had flogged Cheney and Bush would they have come to work the next day to invade foreign lands?
From the article:
If the appeal is turned down, Worgu will receive 40 lashes and have to pay a fine of 250 Sudanese pounds, about US$100.
Fifty pounds was for drinking alcohol, and 200 pounds for driving while drunk.
Not bad for a DUI
