Hannity: Jon Stewart Was Right About Protest Footage (VIDEO)

First Posted: 3/18/10 Updated: 5/25/11

Fox News' Sean Hannity responded to Jon Stewart Wednesday evening after the Daily Show host called out the network for using old footage from a larger September 12, 2009 "Tea Party' protest to illustrate a much smaller health care rally on Capitol Hill last week.

Speaking directly to the camera, Hannity said that it pained him to admit it, but Stewart was correct.

"And although it pains me to say this, Jon Stewart, Comedy Central, he was right. Now on his program last night, he mentioned that we had played some inccorect video on this program last week while talking about the Republican health care rally on Capitol Hill. He was correct, we screwed up. we aired some video of a rally in september along with a video from the actual event. It was an inadverdent mistake, but a mistake none the less. So, Mr. Stewart, you were right. We apologize. But by the way, we wanna thank you and all your writers for watching."

why doesn't he say sorry to the viewers who expect fair and balanced news?

Everyone knows that was no mistake, Hannity.

Makes you, on record, at least twice a liar.

It's a brave thing to watch Hannity.

The end of newspapers is nigh. We even have the editorial cartooners at play now. Poignant strong statements made by a certain mix of the wise, but ultimately visual spokespeople who see the truth in a certain way.

Stewart, Colbert et al come from a very long and respected community. Those who pictured GI joe in the foxholes and now those who pillory the ever so wise.

Tequila: The same way Rachael Maddow, Mr Ed, Chris Matthews, Steven Colbert find ways to deliver what they see as the truth...Hannity uses the same process. There isn't much difference in the technic, just in the Political perceptions.

Um...no. Maddow and Matthews are pundits, opining on the news of the day. Stewart and Colbert are comedians mocking the news, the newsmakers and the newscasters.

lol. These boards are such a waste. My opinions are so wasted here, and so is yours...I hope you realize it. Chris Matthews( with the quiver in his legs when Obama speaks) is no different than Hannity. Actually, Hannity doesn't try to project himself as a news source the way Matthews does. When I hear people try and make Hannity evil, or corrupt they come off as silly. I don't believe half the things I hear from either side. Everyone's got an agenda...so what. When you get a Politician like a Sheila Jackson planting a fake doctor in her Town meeting, then interviewing her about Health Care...that's far more important to me than the slick things pundits, or News people do.

I'm sorry Shan, but you're just like everyone else here. Myself included. You'll see it..when you believe it. lol

Yeah, not so much the same ideas. Furthermore, you do not see such blatant manipulation of reality on Maddow, Ed, Matthews, or even on the comedy shows. So aside from them being for different purposes, commentary v. comedy, there is a different technique... most apply facts and explain an opinion to lead to a conclusion, Fox decides a conclusion and then makes facts that lead to it.

Great. Now admit to the 10,000 other lies you've peddled and we can call it even...

I wish they would fire him. Under any professional journalism standards, one collage would be enough to give him the heave ho.

With all the journalism graduates looking for work across the country, all the reporters with great records who can't make enough of a living in the media circus -- FOX could easily replace this clown with someone reputable and worth watching for more than comic content.

The American viewing public deserves much, much better from a major t.v. prime time slot.

Just imagine.

Hey Hannity. YOU LIE!

I noticed when CNN's Campbell Brown showed this same clip they edited it to eliminate Hannity's snide remark at the end where he thanks Stewart and his writers for watching.

Ms. Brown that was pretty lame!

Note Hannity's sign off: "I wanna thank you and ALL your writers for watching". Addressing Stewart, he reminds viewers that Jon does indeed have writers (not "reporters") and regardless of petty quibbles by the "liberal media", opposition to healthcare reform (in big numbers) is real and everyone, even Daily Show writers, sees it on Fox News. It's almost polite, but I find it unlikely the apology would've been made at all without scripting the last word as a subtle dig casting doubt on the importance of the correction.

Wow. Who knew someone could be so smarmy and smug even while admitting he had made a huge mistake? Or was it a mistake? Hannity's tone suggests that he's amused at having been caught in a deliberate falsehood just this once (eyeroll), but absolutely intends to do it again, with all confidence he'll get away with it.

Hannity has so successfully capitalized on the stupidity and hubris of many Americans that I suppose he should be self-congratulatory. I'm sure that when he reaches the end of his life and departs to that netherworld from which he came, the horned greeter will shake his hand for a job well done.

Exactly! When "real news" has to apologize to "fake news" for cutting old video into new video (which by the way, is REALLY hard to do without deliberate intention), it becomes crystal clear where the truth can be found these days.

This is just another reason people watch Fox News. Last year during the CNN You Tube republican debate CNN planted a Hillary Clinton operative to ask a sensitive gay rights question. This operative was depicted as just a citizen picked by the network to ask a question. When they were called out for it, CNN protested saying they did not know this was a Clinton operative. They lied in the face of huge evidence.

Hmm... so because both make mistakes it is a reason to watch one over the other? Interesting logic you have there.
