American shoppers are splitting again: The affluent are finally starting to buy, picking up designer clothes at places like Nordstrom, while those on the lower economic rungs are still scrimping by, heading to Walmart for the basics.

Recent earnings reports from major retailers suggest that the wealthy, who pulled back their spending the hardest during the financial meltdown last fall, are once again being enticed to open their wallets and going back to higher-end outlets.

"It's a good sign, but we don't see the same across the board," said Richard Hastings, a consumer strategist with Global Hunter Securities LLC.

It's still a far cry from the era of conspicuous consumption. No matter the tax bracket, people are still focused on value and trying to avoid overspending – whatever that might mean to them.

Luxury chains like Nordstrom Inc. and Bloomingdale's, owned by Macy's Inc., say shoppers are spending again on items like shoes and dresses, but still shopping for lower prices and classic pieces that get a lot of use.

On the other hand, discounters like Wal-Mart Stores Inc. are lowering prices even further to coax their less-well-off shoppers to keep spending. And it's not on anything glamorous. We're talking basics, like food and socks.

Think of it as two different groups as the economy recovers – spenders and savers.

THE SPENDERS

Luxury department stores like Nordstrom and Saks are starting to get more traffic. Part of the reason is that they've rolled out some merchandise at slightly lower prices, which is helping to keep the affluent from trading down to other stores.

"If they do spend, it's very scrutinized and it's very value-driven," said luxury retail analyst Robert Burke. "And they want items they can wear multiple places."

Other expensive stores like Abercrombie & Fitch are taking the lesson. The preppy clothing seller said Friday it will offer some lower-priced basics and stock up on denim early next year.

Nordstrom's third-quarter profit rose as sales improved compared with last year. Of course, last year marked a sharp drop in luxury spending as the financial crisis deepened.

Shoppers like Patricia Murnane show what's still changed. The 47-year-old risk manager from New York was shopping for black dress slacks Friday at a Nordstrom in Chicago.

She says she goes to more stores now to make sure she's getting the best price. "I used to consider shopping entertainment, but now I don't think it's entertainment," she said.

___

THE SAVERS

Middle-class and poorer shoppers are still clutching their wallets and focusing on basics, even as they start to venture out to stores more.

Kohl's, a chain of midrange department stores, said more customers came into its stores in the third quarter and made more purchases, but they're still limiting their spending.

Its shoppers are on a mission for a set list of items and not straying, CEO Kevin Mansell said.

"We're not able to convince them to buy that extra thing," he told The Associated Press.

Faced with slower sales, J.C. Penney Co. has cut its inventory so it doesn't have to rely on as much discounting. Sales were still weak as its shoppers continued to worry about job security and tight credit.

Walmart continues to benefit from higher customer traffic as it aggressively discounts everything from electronics to food. But its sales at stores open at least a year slipped for the second straight quarter as shoppers spent less.

Walmart noted more pronounced swings in spending between paycheck cycles – a sign that people have little extra to spend.

That makes sense because Walmart customers who earn the least money are among the economy's hardest-hit as unemployment tops 10 percent and gas prices edge upward, said Hastings, the consumer strategist.

"The lower-income Walmart shopper, they start to become poorer than usual, and they'll really start to lag behind," he said.

Well!! Isn't that the way things work always? The rich are always above the recessions. As a matter of fact, they usually win more when things are bad for the rest.

I don't live in California. My father had a policy for many years and paid the premiums on time. He developed Multiple Sclorosis and he was dropped. This was about the time he had started his own small business. Now he is either rejected or cannot afford premiums on a new policy because of his condition. As his company grew, he was looking at group health insurance options. By having him on the group policy, the premiums for the handful of other employees skyrocketed - and he didn't want his employees to carry that burden. I guess it's just too bad we don't live in California.

And it's too bad that Americans have to depend on being in a group plan to maintain coverage if they develop a chronic condition (in my state, anyway.) As a small business owner, I guess you are okay with being saddled with providing health insurance to all of your employees, not matter what the cost. Wouldn't you like to be free of that burden? The way things are going, you will be mandated to provide coverage, and health insurance companies can keep increasing your out of pocket costs and premiums every year in the double digits, at will - until you have nothing left to run your business. But wait, I guess that doesn't happen in California?

Leave it to the rich to get us out of this mess, they always do. If it were up to libs, there would be no rich and that would eliminate REAL ECONOMIC STIMULUS.

Thank you rich people for all you do, in light of how bad the government screws you.

Now watch all the woe is me comments because you aren't rich. Instead of the stand out with your had out mentality, work hard and take some risks for god's sake. That is what I have done. While it has been anything but fast, easy or low stress, I finally made it and for that I will NEVER apologize. What do I get for being successful? More taxes and less incentive to grow my businesses. And no, my jobs are not minimum wage as the hard working business haters would like to indicate, and many of my workers are like family to me.

To 2010,
I seriously doubt that you are as wealthy as I, nor as educated. Your views are not supported by evidence and show a lack of understanding about our economy because the field is not level.

I am not moved by your anecdotal evidence from your job (I doubt you own any substantial sort of business), but by the numerical facts and flaws in our economic system. People who have worked as hard have lost everything and your blaming innocent people is nonsense! Who cares about any apology or other thoughts from your head. Why do you vote against yourself? Why do you call yourself a capitalist when a good one takes money where ever it is possible. I am an educated capitalistic American and there is money to be made from the wealthy, and like a good capitalist, I wouldn't blame people for legally going after them.

We worked our tails off, got education and no debt and yet a business we contracted with emptied out their accounts and went bankrupt leaving us in the dust and now my husbands job laid off several hundred people rather than do without a profit this quarter.

Spare me your tropisms about the hard working beneficent "business man" while there are still some in the world they do not run the multi-national corporations that have brought us to our knees. And, they do not seem to be the ones in charge of Wall Street where the attitude is scr** everybody else take what I can get even if it means destroying the firm I work for and bolting just ahead of the law...

Adam Smith doesn't live here any more.

I suppose you're in favor of the trickle down theory. A good theory....Right? If you're soooo brilliant, then tell me how it works with nothing being done about NAFTA/Outsourcing and illegal immigration?

If you're as smart as you think you are, you should have no problems answering this question. By looking at the contradictions in your statement, I doubt you're sharp enough to answer the question.

What contradiction you ask? Saying that the rich will get us out, then complaining about people with their hand out. Aren't you saying America should put it's hands out to the rich. Real intelligent comment boss!

BTW, the last time the Rich helped America was under Eisenhower, (the last TRUE Republican as I see it) taxed them @ 91% making it cheaper for them to reinvest in AMERICAN jobs. Study you're history before commenting boss. This is T.H.P. Not Red State. We on T.H.P want facts and numbers.

By the way, Obama, Clinton, Reagan and W are all cut from the same cloth.
Bring back the Bull Moose Part of Teddy Roosevelt, and I'll vote again

Well, goody for them.

I'm trying to buy a car because my 18 year old beater is dying!

Do the wealthy drive 18 year old cars???

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:56 PM on 11/14/2009

Actually, those considered Old Money used to distinguish themselves from New Money by driving beaters, albeit respectable beaters like Olds, Buicks, etc.

Uh, those whose jobs depend on it. For starters, in the upcoming nondenominational, secular, non religion based, (is it okay to say 'holiday' since it could be mistaken for 'holy) shopping season, those working in the retail business are probably a bit pleased with the news.

Women (and Men) today are most definitely exercising restraint and caution when making Designer Apparel and Accessory purchases. You can see it everywhere by the lack of traffic in the Specialty Stores and Boutiques. You can also see the aggressiveness that commission sales professionals employ when they encounter a new prospective client. Two years ago I saw the change coming and decided to develop a high-end Designer website that features new , Vintage and pre-owned Designer Clothing and Accessories. Our response has been overwhelming both in the US and on an international basis. Shop from the comfort of your home or your desk and you can find the best selection of new and pre-owned Designer RTW and Accessories at savings up to 75% off their original prices. No aggressive sales person here only fashion and style at amazing savings. Visit www.runwayclothesconsignment.com today.

Wealth Gap Is Increasing, Study Shows

The rich really are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, a new University of Michigan study shows. Rising inequality isn't new. The gap between rich and poor started growing before Ronald Reagan took office, and it continued to widen through the Clinton years.

But what happened under Bush is something entirely unprecedented: For the first time in our history, so much growth is being siphoned off to a small, wealthy minority that most Americans are failing to gain ground even during a time of economic growth -- and they know it. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/08/070807171936.htm

I make over 230k a year..and there is no way I am going back to the way I was spending like I did a few years ago...but I guess im also not as wealthy as these people so...

I used to buy 300 dollar jeans and 400 dollar sunglasses and 500 dollar cashmere sweaters....I knew the people who worked at nordstrom by name....how ridiculous, I havent been to nordstroms in like 9 months....and I dont plan on going back. I have everything I could want, I am really done. I have flat screen tvs in everyroom, I have lovely things, my closets are full, my house is decorated beautifully...

In the sense when you eat too much you get full, I bought so much during the high times, I am now full.

Luckily I didnt get caught up in the housing market a few years ago, I bought my house 13 years ago for a song...and didnt refinance it, so I guess thats the only things ive done right so far.

I think the middle class is full from all the buying they were doing in the last couple years, and now they have everything they need, so why buy more?

"I think the middle class is full from all the buying they were doing in the last couple years, and now they have everything they need"

No - let me explain it simply so you can understand - the middle class does not HAVE the money to buy those things. Those who are middle class are lucky if they can FEED themselves and their children...

What planet are you living on??

If you were middle class at any time in your life before you started to "make over 230k a year," then perhaps you've forgotten what it is like. If you weren't - hold on to your boot straps, cuz the best [sic] is yet to come...

It ain't over til it's over, and, sad to say, it's not over yet. Hey, I've been living like this for years... at least I know how to live on nothing.
