What's Your Reaction?

Do you remember those self-esteem projects from grade school in which a teacher would ask you to spell your name out vertically and write adjectives that describe you starting with each letter in your name? Like my name is Pam and I'm pretty, awesome and majestic. Unfortunately for young Alex, he or she is the saddest kid in the class. Yes, Alex is angry and lazy (bummer) but also enchanted (note: he or she is not enchantING) and Xtra (we have no idea what that means, but if you were gonna turn ex into x why not go for "exciting"?)

For everyone who thinks the slightest hint of negative emotion is a subtle cry for help that will end in a school shootout if you don't do something, let me just spell this out for you coming from the perspective of someone who, as a kid, would have done exactly this:

Angry (that I have to do this)
Lazy (when choosing what L would represent)
Enchanted (starts with an E)
Xtra (isn't a word and no good words start with X, thanks a lot for making me do this)

Boy, the armchair psychiatrists have come out of the woodworks this morning!!

Personally, I feel that psychiatrists cannot really know what is going on in a person's mind. Just because ythey hit the nail on the head of some of those who seek help, does not mean they truly are that knowledgeable about people's psyche. It just means they got lucky!!

he's way too young to carry an artistic license, so someone should tell him extra begins with an "e". kids these days...we have to ruin their fun before it's too late.

If the writer's name is Pam, why was it filed by Alex Leo?

This is depressing. Maybe he's just the class clown.

It's depressing because this is probably what he hears all the time at school and at home. Maybe he is very creative and feels enchanted, but is in an education system where creativity is discouraged because school now is test-driven. Teachers have been complaining that children are not learning anything except how to pass a test. I would guess that a lot of creative people have been called lazy.
As for "angry," I think that fits in too. It is difficult swimming against the tide, but thankfully there are still people doing it.

Angry and lazy seem polar opposites on the scale for emotional energy. Hope they balance.

Enchanted is good, so an understanding of the sense of the mysterious.

Xtra is special good because this child knows that there is more to all of their feelings, understandings, and thoughts that can not be expressed at any given point in time, and in this way he or she are magical because they themselves know that a spontaneous generation of creative thought at any given moment can occur in them and show a new day (subsitute way, paradigm, dream, if you wish.) There is xtra. imho

I can only wonder how the kids, long ago, razzed guys like Bill Gates and Donald Trump...who now run the frigging world while the "popular" kids fight each other for a crappy middle management job at Wal Mart.

Far too much pressure on kids to be / feel / think / act according to our own expectations. Perhaps s/he WAS angry about something when the project was written? Children often identify with their immediate emotions/impulses rather than their overall state of mind and separating the two can be quite challenging (even for adults).

I find it much more disturbing that someone (be it a member of school faculty, student or visitor) thought it appropriate to take a picture of a grade school class project and post it on the internet.

I'll offer my read on this.

Angry because his first name is truncated and gender neutral, "Alex" instead of "Alexis" or "Alexander". He wants more respect.

Lazy because he's smart enough to avoid pointless or tedious work, and because people tell him he's lazy.

Enchanted because he's enamored with his teacher who must be a very charismatic lady.

Xtra because he's cognitively ahead of his class, yet not socially-integrated enough to go up a grade.
