Disaster Flick 2012 Dominates The Box Office

John Cusack

deadline.com:

Sony Pictures is saying this morning its 2012 opened as a runaway No. 1 with $23.7 million Friday, including $1M in Thursday midnights, for what's looking like a $61+M weekend. That's big for a PG-13 popcorn pic that's neither a previously established brand or franchise. Yet another in a long line of signature Roland Emmerich films featuring world destruction, this catastrophe film was anything but at the domestic and international box office.

Teabaggers will point to this movie as reason to impeach President Obama.

Wait for PPV or DVD. This flick is not worth the price of admission.

i love disaster movies, accurate or not. still haven't seen this one tho. cant wait to see it.

Actually I can't wait for the Palin/Bachmann debacle of 2012. When the end does not happen the repugs and televangicals will blame the libruls for planting that fake stuff with the Mayans just like they did the Hawaiians about Obama's birth certificate!

When's this one gonna end up on the SyFy Channel?
Does Rupert own that one TOO?

Watching it as a comedy worked for me. The biggest neutrino blast ever recorded and the superheating of the earth's core were kept secret, a good trick. John Cusack must have died 400 times. All the adulterers were killed. Woody Harrelson and the End is Near sign people turned out to be right. The earthquake effects were ironic a la Mad Magazine. Every cliche from every genre of big disaster movie found its way into the script. I laughed my butt off.

The world desperately needs 2012 to be what it's said to be. End of story. Human existence is on a, largely, unsustainable path. We have no methods to curb population growth and free market capitalism is fueling an exponentially increasing unsustainability. We're have too many children, making too much "money", living too unhealthily and surprisingly, through medicine, living entirely TOO long. The Taoist in me says that humanity has been thrown out of balance by a small group of very dominant, very greedy men. The Taoist in me also says, there is absolutely nothing to be afraid of no matter what happens. Just as there is nothing to fear right here and now.

There is no free market. It has been regulated out of existence.

Don't tell me. I couldn't care any less about the free market. It is what it is. I don't care if it succeeds or fails. It really isn't a part of what matters to me. Give me a barter system and I'd be content. The free market doesn't grow anything but wealth and power. Wealth and power are the instruments of fools.

HA!

2012 we'll see...

I haven't seen it, but it looks awful. It's been SOLD OUT though for days here in central Siberia, and they show films from 10am to 3am, regardless of the day of the week. Several have shown it on multiple screens. I promised a friend I'd go this week--might have to have a shot or two of Russian "little water" before going. Eh, it'll give me a chance to practice my Russian (they dub films here--it might even be better in Russian).

That you live in central siberia explains a lot as to why a crappy disaster flick has been sold out for days. I'd be having more than a shot or two of the russian water, as you call it, just to make it through the god forsaken winter. Good luck, SiberianRat, good luck.

just saw this movie. As much as I LOVE Cusack, this thing was a piece of c.r.a.p.

It was tedious, predictable and just the epitomy of a crappy Hollywood movie (which seems to be all of them these days)

Save your money.

And when nothing happens in 2012, people will think it was cause the Mayans miscalculated and it will really happen in 2013 and so on and so on. until some other big "prophecy".
12:52 AM on 11/15/2009
The GOP and Fox will blame Obama.

Why on earth would the "religious" right care about Mayan cosmology? Sounds pretty blasphemous to me.

Hey, don't take end times away from me! I need an excuse to stock up on ammo and MREs and build myself a cool end times shelter.

"Misinterpretation of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar is the basis for a New Age belief that a cataclysm will take place on December 21, 2012. December 20, 2012 is simply the last day of the 13th b'ak'tun. But that is not the end of the Long Count because the 14th through 20th b'ak'tuns are still to come."

"Sandra Noble, executive director of the Mesoamerican research organization FAMSI, notes that "for the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle". However, she considers the portrayal of December 2012 as a doomsday or cosmic-shift event to be "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in.""

This movie is exactly what you'd expect, but, the special effects, that might have looked OK on a TV screen are so cheesy, like they were done 10 years ago, and by the end, the whole movie has the look of a home video. Really low production values....
