Sunday is national "Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day" and to celebrate we wanted to show you our gross fridge and see yours! Below is a pic of the group fridge in our New York office. That mystery thing on the top right looks pretty scary, but no more so than that spinach soup that's formed from those rotting greens below.

Is your fridge kinda gross? Know someone's whose is? Take a picture and click the "PARTICIPATE" button. Just upload the image, add a title and a caption and hit submit!

In Douglas Adams' "The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul", any problem not dealt with in this life becomes something else in the realm of the gods. Dirk's un-dealt-with fridge evolves into a new and terrifying god. These pics top my imagined version of the contents of Dirk's fridge.

If it might possibly help anyone, here's what I do:

The day before trash day, empty the fridge, propping the door with the garbage can, chuck everything into the trash, scraping out old food, toss the containers into the sink (unless they're as nasty as some of the above), put all the good stuff on the counter. Spray the entire inside with window cleaner and wipe from top to bottom with a scalding wet cloth. While putting them back, give all the condiment bottles, etc. a wipe with a hot cloth too. Seriously, only takes like 15 minutes and you won't freak out if your visiting mom wants iced lemonade and discovers your dirty secret.

I would have mentioned composting, but some of those goodies up there look like they'd spawn something worse than a new terrible god.

Glass cleaner? I don't get it. Ironically, I'm reading this while taking a break from cleaning my refrigerator, and I'm doing fine with warm soapy water and some paper towels. Glass cleaner is toxic -- I prefer using a product made to clean things that come in contact with your mouth.

Doing it the night before garbage pickup I agree with. Ideally this will also coincide with the day before you go grocery shopping, so you will have lots of empty space in which to put the new groceries, thus avoiding a toxic pileup.

Back to the Big White Box.

Get yourself a permanent marker or some water soluable lables and mark the date on the package when you buy it and likewise when it was opened. Much opened food should be discarded after three days. Do not freeze foods wrapped in original packaging. That is non frozen foods. Use freezer wrap to add an additional barrier and mark the date and contents on the feezer wrap. Honestly people stop wasting food. This is treated as a joke but is downright sinful!

If I knew how to transfer the photos from my phone onto my computer I would send some pretty interesting shots!
Anybody know how to do that?

I only buy a few things at a time to ensure that i eat everything.

Recently, we went through our fridge and found stuff that expired in 2005.

In my house we refer to the plastic bin "Crisper" as what it really is..the "ROTTER"

So is ours. There is never enough food in my house. Leftovers last 1 day because it's renamed to, "dinner".

People waste too much food. Like my grandmother used to tell us all the time, "Do you know that there's someone who doesn't have enough to eat and would gladly have what you just wasted?"

Same here! But only because I'm broke. And leftovers only last until they're made into a meal the next night. Not long enough to grow fur.

Although, some of those look like my fridge when I had two roommates in college. Science experiments in to go containers abounded back in the day.

Yes it's true, if you live in a country where there is so much food that it goes bad because you choose not to eat it.. We'll you are one lucky son of a gun.

Our fridge at work smells, but we can't find the source. People get really pissed off when you throw away their stuff. It has a cantaloupey smell. Nobody wants to be the one to clean it out. We have to send out a memo, and eventually someone gets upset...too much drama. We just live with the smell.

The office where I worked posted this message. "Fridge will be cleaned out every Friday, if you want your containers take them hm before then, or say Bye Bye!!! Our fridge did not smell nor did you see mystery meals linger in there.

Just about every company I've worked for did that, with the same type of sign. The office cleaners had the job of cleaning the fridge on Fridays. If there was food there, an email was sent out on Friday mornings and by 3pm, every "opened" food item was discarded. If you had an unopened bottle or can of something, it remained, but everything else went into File 13.

There should be a support group for people, like me, who buy too many condiments - I can really relate to that one woman's fridge! Help me before I buy black bean sauce again!
