Obama Urges Congress To Put Off Fort Hood Probe, Warns Against Turning Tragedy Into "Political Theater" (VIDEO)

(AP) WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Saturday urged Congress to hold off on any investigation of the Fort Hood rampage until federal law enforcement and military authorities have completed their probes into the shootings at the Texas Army post, which left 13 people dead.

On an eight-day Asia trip, Obama turned his attention home and pleaded for lawmakers to "resist the temptation to turn this tragic event into the political theater." He said those who died on the nation's largest Army post deserve justice, not political stagecraft.

"The stakes are far too high," Obama said in a video and Internet address released by the White House while the president he was flying from Tokyo to Singapore, where Pacific Rim countries were meeting.

Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, 39, was charged on Thursday with the shooting spree at Fort Hood last week. Army investigators have said Hasan is the only suspect and could face additional charges.

Obama already had ordered a review of all intelligence related to Hasan and whether the information was properly shared and acted upon within government agencies. Several members of Congress, particularly Michigan Rep. Peter Hoekstra, the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, have also called for a full examination of what agencies knew about Hasan's contacts with a radical Muslim cleric in Yemen and others of concern to the U.S.

Hoekstra confirmed this week that government officials knew of about 10 to 20 e-mails between Hasan and the radical imam, beginning in December 2008.

A joint terrorism task force overseen by the FBI learned late last year of Hasan's repeated contact with the cleric, who encouraged Muslims to kill U.S. troops in Iraq. The FBI said the task force did not refer early information about Hasan to superiors because it concluded he wasn't linked to terrorism.

Lawmakers, however, already have announced they want their own investigations and were frustrated with what they view as a less-than-forthcoming administration.

Rep. Howard McKeon, R-Calif., said he wanted to go ahead with an investigation from the House Armed Services Committee, where he is the top Republican. He said he wanted an investigation that wouldn't compromise law enforcement or military investigations that were continuing on separate tracks.

In the Senate, Sen. Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut independent, said his Homeland Security Committee was opening an investigation.

Obama said he was not opposed to hearings – eventually. But he strongly pressed lawmakers to hold off until the probes now under way are completed.

"There is an ongoing investigation into this terrible tragedy," Obama said. "That investigation will look at the motives of the alleged gunman, including his views and contacts."

"We must compile every piece of information that was known about the gunman, and we must learn what was done with that information. Once we have those facts, we must act upon them."

Just to reiterate along with the other individuals doing so:

There's already an investigation going on. It's just not being run by Congress.

Because of the position that I hold and the people under my influence, I have been granted unfettered access to ALL the information regarding this tragedy. After studying the evidence, I have concluded that the gunman acted stupidly.

Congress can't speed anything up. All congress is good at impediment.

This Obama presidency is as transparent as molasses.

if anything, the investigation should be speeded up not held off. this has nothing to do with politics but has everything to do with pc.

Evidently, you did't read the article. Investigations are in progress...just not the congressional dog and pony show. Since this occurred on a military base with military personnel, shouldn't it be the military court or tribunal?

This is in the article.

“President Barack Obama on Saturday urged Congress to hold off on any investigation of the Fort Hood rampage until federal law enforcement and military authorities have completed their probes into the shootings at the Texas Army post, which left 13 people dead.”

Read it here then go to the article and read it there. Then read it again and again, until it registers.

Congress could not find the truth if it was staring them in the face. Once again, there is an investigation going on.

the Republicans would turn this into another Terri Schiavo circus. they want to be on camera talking about how all Muslims are terrrrrist ! and they should be "looked" at. The Republicans would take this incident and turn it into something that it ain't. this was not a terrorist attack, this was the act of a disturbed person. THIS IS THE MILITARY'S FAULT!. PERIOD. there were signs that something was wrong with him, instead of the military giving him a Medical Discharge citing "mental disorders" they kept shuffeling him around, shoving him off on to somebody else. The military was more concerned about the money that was spent on educating him in his chosen MOS than the safety of the other Soldiers. I served in the military (2 tours), I prepared Administrative Discharges 3-14, I saw people that were put out of the military and court martialed over b.s., and I saw people who had no business being in the military. President Obama is right, take your time, find out all the facts, who knew this person was dangerous and did nothing about it. then take the appropriate action. one more thing, we had another "Jessica" moment, remember the blond girl at the beginning of the Iraq war and how she got all this credit for nothing? I want to know how long was that female "civilian" police officer going to tell that lie before she admitted that it was not she who took down Maj Hasan

Well, that's the likely scenario.

We'll find out - from the military investigation.

Why should the people have to wait for truth, honesty and a professional investigation of the events that occurred on that day?

Has there now been a flip-flop on the transparency thing? Apparently so.

What's the new mantra?
10:22 AM on 11/16/2009
So you don't think the FBI and military police can conduct a professional investigation without Congress stepping in to micro-manage them?

Yeah...I thought Congress couldn't do anything right!
05:59 AM on 11/17/2009
Wait for truth...sure, let's make impulsive decisions without gathering the facts first. No, Pres Obama is correct to have the military complete their investigation. It occurred on a military base with military personnel and the military are investigating. I'm sure you would prefer a repub dog and pony show...

A Palestinian (Arab) Nidal Malik Hasan,
using his American citizenship, infiltrated the US Military as an Army Psychiatrist, where he committed an act of terror by mass murdering his fellow soldiers in what was an ultimately unsuccessful suicide attack, as he lived.
If a Palestinian or any Muslim had committed this same act in Israel, Iraq, India, Pakistan or Afghanistan, this would have immediately been labeled an act of Terrorism and Hasan a Terrorist.
04:06 PM on 11/16/2009
A US military officer would be equipped to commit far more devastating terrorist acts than shooting up their workplace.
08:04 PM on 11/15/2009
If anyone has turned this tragedy into a political event, it is Barack Obama.

No, by doing just the opposite.

If you can grill, in public, corporate types over flying in corporate jets, Congress can certainly grill, in public, all those related to an American Arab Islamic Radical Military Officer who killed 13 Americans and wounded 29 other Americans!

The White House cannot be allowed to spin control and cover up the deaths of theses fallen soldiers. How dare they presume to have an investigation of this matter done on their time. It happened now get on with it, come what may. What are they trying to hide? Where's the honor to the victims? Announcements can only now be made at Obama's politically correct time? Please say this isn't the case.
08:00 PM on 11/15/2009
Geez, he sounds worse than Bush. He doesn't even pretend to be the transparency guy anymore.

then why is obama out on a global campaigning tour?

so many promises to other nations means broken promises to the nation he was elected to lead.

At his convenience? Since when did Barack Obama have authority over when the families of the dead can get an immediate closure and answer to their loss. Obama wants them to wait until he feels its all right for them to cry and have the tears flow down their cheeks from their saddened eyes, and the Media will go along and support this? Where's the outrage? Who in H does Obama think he is? This is totally outrageous, and he shouldn't be allowed to get away with it.

Go back & read the article. Take a deep breath & calm down. If you want outrage, I'm sure Rush, InsHannity & Becks will have plenty of faux outrage for everybody.

It's apparent that most of our right wing friends have not read or do not understand what they read in this article. There is an investigation going on right now by the FBI and the Army. But is seems that that is not good enough for the right. They want congress to investigate. We should have an investigation body investigating congress.
Right wingers answer this.
Does congress have people trained in gathering evidence at the crime scene?
People who will not contaminate the evidence, people who can catalog where the evidence was located, discern when an eye witness is tell the truth, lying, or mistaken in their testimony.
Does congress have crime labs to evaluate what was gathered at the crime scene?
No, they are going to get all of this information from the FBI and Army investigations.
So why do you take a pill and chill. Let the people who know how to investigate, investigate.
If the tea party is not satisfied with the findings, then they can force their republican servants to form an investigation.
