Conservative Trio Supports Transferring Gitmo Detainees To Illinois

Trio

Republicans in Congress are gearing up to fight a new White House effort to relocate detainees at Guantanamo Bay to a prison facility in Illinois. But on Sunday, a group of highly respected conservative figures lent their support to the transfer, calling it necessary to "preserve national security" while simultaneously avoiding "sweeping and radical departures from an American constitutional tradition."

In a joint statement prepared by the Constitution Project, David Keene, founder of American Conservative Union, Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, and former representative and presidential candidate Bob Barr say moving suspected terrorists to the Thomson, Illinois prison facility, "makes good sense." Taxpayers, they note, have already invested $145 million in the facility, which has been "little used." And the surrounding community, they add, could benefit from increased employment once the prison becomes filled.

"The scaremongering about these issues should stop," they add, noting that there is "absolutely no reason to fear that prisoners will escape or be released into their communities."

The letter is a bit of a boost for the Obama administration, which has had great difficulty finding a politically palatable way to transfer prisoners and close Gitmo. Still, having the support of an elected Republican would be preferable. Already, Mark Kirk, the Republican Senate candidate in Illinois, has blasted the administration for considering the Thomson facility.

"As home to America's tallest building, we should not invite Al Qaeda to make Illinois its number one target," Kirk said in a letter circulated Saturday.

Here is the entire statement from Norquist, Keene and Barr::

As it moves to close Guantanamo and develop policies for handling terrorism suspects going forward, the government should rely upon our established, traditional system of justice. This includes our system of federal prisons, which have repeatedly proven they can safely hold persons convicted of terrorism offenses.

We are confident that the government can preserve national security without resorting to sweeping and radical departures from an American constitutional tradition that has served us effectively for over two centuries.

Civilian federal courts are the proper forum for terrorism cases. Civilian prisons are the safe, cost effective and appropriate venue to hold persons convicted in federal courts. Over the last two decades, federal courts constituted under Article III of the U.S. Constitution have proven capable of trying a wide array of terrorism cases, without sacrificing either national security or fair trial standards.

Likewise the federal prison system has proven itself fully capable of safely holding literally hundreds of convicted terrorists with no threat or danger to the surrounding community.

The scaremongering about these issues should stop.

Using a state of the art but little used prison facility like the one at Thomson, Illinois - with any appropriate security upgrades our law enforcement professionals deem necessary - makes good sense for the tax payers who invested $145 million in the facility and who are seeing millions wasted every month at the costly, inefficient Guantanamo facility. It makes sense for the community which will benefit from the related employment and has absolutely no reason to fear that prisoners will escape or be released into their communities.

But most of all it makes sense for America because it is a critical link in the process of closing Guantanamo and getting this country back to using its tried and true, constitutionally sound institutions.

Bob Barr, Member of U.S. Congress (R-GA), 1995-2003; CEO, Liberty Strategies, LLC; the 21st Century Liberties Chair for Freedom and Privacy, the American Conservative Union, 2003- 2008; Chairman, Patriots to Restore Checks and Balances; Practicing Attorney

David Keene, Chairman, American Conservative Union; Member, Board of Directors, National Rifle Association

Grover Norquist, President, Americans for Tax Reform

UPDATE: During his show on Monday night, MSNBC's Keith Olberman hit on the notion that the debate about closing Gitmo can no longer be thought of as simply conservatives vs. liberals. In a segment with Newsweek's Jonathan Alter, the Countdown host made the case that Republicans like Rudy Guiliani have become increasingly isolated from mainstream thinking on issues of detaining and trying terrorist suspects.

"About these three conservatives," said Olberman, "particularly Mr. Barr, who is now in agreement with me that this is scaremongering -- if this is the consensus, Bob Barr and me and Grover Norquist, how bad has the GOP become in terms of trying to exploit this deadly serious issue for political advantage?"

LATER UPDATE: There are, it should be noted, additional conservative and Republican figures who have signed the Constitution Project's petition calling for Gitmo's closure. The list includes former Reps. Mickey Edwards (R-Ok) and Barry Goldwater Jr. (R-Calif) as well as Scott McConnell, editor-at-large of The American Conservative, David C. Miller Jr., who served on the National Security Council for President George H.W. Bush, and Lawrence Wilkerson, former chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Seems to me that all the 'hand-wringing' about closing GITMO and bringing the terrorists-detainees-or what ever we call them this week has nothing to do with security.

Some people believe that recognizing that they have legal rights will mean that they will be recognized as human beings.

In every war the first thing an Administration tries to do is demonize the enemy.

Rightly or wrongly President Obama is saying that this is not a war on terror but a war against people who are breaking our laws.

I think this is a start in the separation of law breakers who happen to be Muslim from 'all Muslims are terrorists.'

I live in NW Illinois and support transferring the detainees to the Thomson prison. With only about 200-250 prisoners expected to be imprisoned in a facility equipped to house over 800 and with a guard to prisoner ratio of 3 or 4 to 1, what in the world are people afraid of happening?

A hearty band of Afghanis hell-bent on breaking out their compatriots? They would surely stand out here--big time! Unless of course they can easily pose as middle-aged, white, farmers.

I dare say that not many would even want to venture outside in the prison yard in January with the winds whipping up from the Mississippi River. The biggest worry then will be hip fractures when they fall on the 3" of ice under the 3' of snow.

Furthermore, these couple hundred detainees do not come anywhere close to the almost 1/2 MILLION prisoners the US housed within our country during WWII. Camp Grant in Rockford, Illinois (about 1.5 hrs from Thomson) itself had about 2500 (mostly German) prisoners. Many of those prisoners were even brought to family farms to work!

So, everyone should just get a grip and use some logic & common sense. I am especially sick of politicians screaming foul when a member of the opposing party has a good idea. Play nice OK!

FINANCIAL COUP ---- UNDER COVER OF TORTURE

Surely torture was a major distraction from the $11 trillion handed over
to high finance last winter, along with the auto bailouts and a make
believe healthcare reform that is nothing more than a bailout for the
insurance industry.

For absolute and irreversible is our total loss of governmental
control, as our wealth has been shipped out of the country
and all they left us with is a national debt impossible to repay.

How good is Obama going to look when this is over? When running for re-election he will be credited with finally bringing these guys to justice.

The rigth wingers claim that these people have no rights under our Constitution. I guess they missed the most recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that by a 5-4 votes said that they do.

In fact, these people will be brought to justice much faster by having civilan trials. The appeals in the military cases will go on for years and years and years.

A lot of those opposed to the trials in NYC do not realize how diferent Federal court is than state court.Federal judges take no nonsense in their court rooms. There are no cameras, and attorneys are not allowed to play act. This case is a slam dunk.

PERFECT HEALTH ---- IN JUST ONE DAY

People fill up on a diet saturate with 50% fats on the average,
and then blame bad health on chemicals and things impossible to change.

SOLUTION
Breakfast of fresh fruit over oatmeal.
Dinner of stew with lentils or beans, brown rice and vegetables.

No doctor bills in over 30 years, raised a family of five and all
in perfect health.

Seven years on Social Security and still refuse to pay the $104
a month for Medicare. Now that is hope you can live on.

Good for you! I hope you stay healthy but don't ever take it for granted. It's a gift; you didn't earn it.

My husband never smoked, only drinks an occasional glass of red wine, gets plenty of exercise, eats an extremely healthful diet, gets plenty of rest and has been monogamous for the past thirty years. He even has good genetics--his mom is 89 and his dad lived to be 90. He still got a brain tumor. The tumor is gone thanks to the miracles of modern medicine but he now suffers the late-term side effects of radiation therapy. He's about to be subjected to Avastin a chemotherapy drug that hopefully will counteract the radiation effects. Unlike you, he's not old enough to get Medicare and I couldn't think of retiring because he's on my health care plan and he'd never be able to get health insurance on his own.

Thank God that you are healthy but never take it for granted.

The neo-cons have turned 9-11 into a pseudo-religion and its perpetrators that religion's terrifying devils.

9-11 was a terrible tradgedy, but it is not unlike other acts throughout history, and it is no cause for national insanity and irrational reactions from mindless fear to abadoning our own principles.

Those accused of these terrorist attacks are criminals. Nothing more. They caught us off guard, and did tremendous harm and damage, but we should not cringe in fear and allow them to cause us to abandone the Rule of Law and our own better principles.

It is time for some national courage, and time for the U.S. to again stand up and say to the world, we are better than the criminals that shamefully attacked innocents, we will prove it by showing courage and respecting the Rule of Law they defiled, and we refuse to be afraid or to allow them to change who we are.

The neo-cons have been making a living scaring us.

Stop listening to them.

When I left home a couple of hours ago the discussion here was actually about the posted article and there was speculation about the pushback which would come from such folks as Rush Limbaugh. I have been delivering meals on wheels so checked him out - until he had Sarah Palin on as a guest and I couldn't take that. It took him almost the entire first hour to get to the Illinois prison. Sorry I missed the very first part of his discussion but I got back to the car to hear him float his conspiracy theory that the Illinois prison in this small town with no high school will require, between the prison and the new school which will have to be built for the dependent children of the prison employees, many job opportunities - but only for (can you guess?) UNION workers. Ohmigosh. That explains it all. Why didn't I think of that?
