9 Children's Books With Political Agendas

Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/18/10 06:12 AM ET   Updated: 05/25/11 03:40 PM ET

There's a new kids' book out November 23 by conservative author Katharine DeBrecht called "Help! Mom! Radicals Are Ruining My Country!" which in particular makes an evil villain out of Nancy Pelosi but also, according to DeBrecht's website, makes sure to

teach [children] the origins of the new Tea Party movement and the importance of standing up for liberty and the American Dream.

This isn't DeBrecht's first children's book. In fact, there's a whole series of "Help! Mom!" books. This got us thinking about other children's books with political agendas. 9 of them are below. Vote on the ones you think have the most obvious agenda, and send us your own, if you know of any others!

Does anyone remember the book, "The Bobbsey Twins?" My mom innocently purchased it for me when I was 10 years old. We soon discovered that it blatantly promoted classicism, racism, and racial segregation.

I wouldn't say "The Lorax" has a political agenda...it certainly has an agenda, but it's a moral/environmental one. I wish people didn't lump the environment in with politics. Pretty much all of our environmental problems are caused by that.

Most of Dr. Seuss's books are politically charged. "The Cat in the Hat" is anti-authoritarian, "Yertle the Turtle" is about the class system and "The Sneetches" is about discrimination.

Virtually any book--for children or grown-ups--can be viewed as having a "political" agenda. What matters is whether an author aims to tell lies and spread irrational fear with regurgitated half-truths, or reveal the truth with imagination.

Liberals under my bed? Could be worse if they were guys like Larry Craig, Mark Foley or Ted Haggard.

There's also a cartoon called Fox & Friends.

"The Lorax" is a great book about consumerism and the consumption of this earth for status and greed. The Lorax speaks for the trees and for those of us who love our mother earth.

Add Dickens' "A Christmas Carol", which underscores the ravages of laissez faire capitalism in 19th century England (within his robe, the ghost of Christmas present had the children "want" and "ignorance").

Wow.

And the wingnuts think Obama is "indoctrinating" kids because he told them to stay in school?

Inconceivable!
11:38 AM on 11/18/2009
Yes, that was pretty nervy of the President. How dare he, like, back my play and all by telling my children the same things I have been telling them.

"Stay in school"
"Study hard - learn as much about as many things as you can"
"Have a dream and work hard to achieve that dream"
"Be the best you can be at what ever you put your mind to do"

Obviously if the president says kids should stay in school, it must be some commie plot to indoctrinate our sweet little babies to his socialist agenda. We'll just conveniently skip over the fact that Reagan did it, Bush Sr. did it, Clinton did it, Bush Jr. did it.

They forgot THE GRINCH, which is a condemnation of the commercialization of Christmas.

The difference that jumps right out at me: the liberal books are positive and describe WHY someone voted Dem for instance, and the conservative books are mocking and scary.

Imagine how delighted a child, once grown up, might be when they see some of these Help, Mom! books in their memory boxes.... NOT.

I dunno, if they're raised like how I'm thinking, it's probably right next to their Bible.

That just fits the primary pattern. The GOP is the party of fear now, so naturally, they want to scare small children as much as they scare sane adults.

Not sure why the LORAX is on this list. It is not about politics - it is about why you should not rape and pillage the environment and pollute to your hearts content. I would think that is a moral issue not a political one.

What political party would determine it is better to destroy the environment instead of trying to save it??

Seriously? How can this be seen as a political statement? If you are against the message in the Lorax you are against:

* Sanity
* Decency
* The Planet Earth
* God's Will

Oh wait... the Republican's are against taking care of the planet.... man how could I forget?
