Eating A Deep Fried Fish That's Still Alive (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 3/18/10 Updated: 5/25/11

Eating "rare" delicacies just got to a new level. In China, chefs have figured out a way to keep a fish alive as it gets deep fried and then waits to be eaten.

Below is the shocking video of a deep-fried fish that's still living and moving on a plate. Warning, this may be too graphic for some readers.

What Do You Think Of Eating A Cooked Fish That's Still Alive?

This is bad, but no worse than factory farm meat.

Not that big of a deal, it's just a fish.

This is totally awful.

Ah, jeez. The fish is dead, people.

They've figured out a way to serve the fish before the final neuron firings have occurred, that's all. It's like human bodies where they are dead - heart's stopped beating, body's shut down - but there are still twitches and movement because of nerve firings.

There's no way the fish is "still alive" after being deep fried.

This is ridiculous. Cruelty to fish? Let's just ignore the mounds of scientific evidence showing that fish do not have the psychological capacity for suffering. They don't think. They don't feel. This is such a non-issue.

If you try to catch a fish, it tries to escape. That's all you need to know.

Come on, people. Do you really think that fish was alive? Even if it wasn't gutted (and it sure looks like it was to me), it was tossed in a deep-fryer from the neck down so to speak. The blood would begin boiling and the heart would stop pumping within seconds. However, because the head wasn't burned, there would still be some post-death reflexes in the gills and mouth. Notice how the mouth doesn't move unless someone probes the gill with a chopstick? A friend once showed me how he could do the same thing with fresh-caught largemouth bass. The bass had been pulled out of the water two hours earlier. They also continued to flop every now and then until we got around to gutting and cooking them an hour later. It takes awhile for the neural system to shut down.

Strange people, you Americans. You stuff your animals with Monsanto chemicals until they can't can't walk and you let them be slaughtered in crush-kill machines and then you stuff your greasy fat faces with the bi-product you call 'food'. You create disgusting life forms so that you can destroy the planet with chemical run-off and methane waste gas (animal farts) but you find eating a fish while its alive offensive? Just to let you know, that live fish tastes wonderful and the other thing that was wonderfully delicious in China was dog - the best place for any dog is barbecued and on your plate. Genetically altered life-resistant food for everyone! And chemicals be praised, America is number one!

This American finds it all revolting.

"I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You're a plague and we are the cure."

Why is it less appalling to eat a dead animal? Is it because we didn't watch it die, or kill it ourselves?

How do human beings reach such a low?
03:58 PM on 11/20/2009
We do it every time we order fast food and poly- hydro- whaterver-'d food. But it only seems different when the animal is looking at us in the eye.

Cheer up, Hal: humanity is doing its best to wipe itself out. Unfortunately, it seems determined to take the rest of the world with it.

This proves that China MUST NOT be allowed to become the economic power of the world.

Thats a poor argument. USA supported slavery, therefore it shouldn't have become a world power.

It's not like the moral zeitgeists always stays the same.

I've heard there are alot of underground places all over the world where you can eat really bizarro things for huge amounts of money. Some people have too much money.

unfortunately, this dish is not expensive....costs not much more, in fact, than having it prepared humanely.

were is PETA? I think the only way to stop this meal from being served again is that PETA, incorages everyone to stop buying chinese goods, or shoping at walmart.

Oh come on now, you know that people are not going to stop shopping at walmart because there is no ideal in the world noble enough to trump those everyday low prices.

(absolute sarcasm here, personally I have not set foot in a walmart in a decade, and I believe that any person who does not want to be thought of as cheap trailer-trash should refuse to give them their money)

Agreed.

There is _one_ exception, though.

Every once in a while, they advertise an item _so_low_ you know they are losing money on it. IF you need that item, go buy it and ONLY it. This way they lose money! As an example, last year I got a name-brand coffee maker for $1.99 - their big version of it. I don't really know what their cost was but the usual retail was about 18, so their cost was probably half that, and the maker half that again. So, their usu. would be 9, their supplier's cost about 4.5. At 2, that's a certain loss....

The last I heard, PETA was busy calling fat women "Whales". Clearly their priorities could use some adjusting.
