Fox News Runs Old Palin Campaign Footage, Reports It As Book-Signing Crowds [UPDATE]

First Posted: 3/18/10 Updated: 5/25/11

Last week, Jon Stewart and The Daily Show caught Fox News' Sean Hannity running old footage of September Tea Party crowds in an attempt to make Michele Bachmann's smaller November Tea Party shindig appear to be more well-attended than it was. Is Fox up to the same tricks today? Faiz Shakir at ThinkProgress thinks so, and he pulls a segment that seems to tout the crowds that greeted Sarah Palin on the stump during the 2008 campaign as throngs that are gathering to purchase Sarah Palin's book, Going Rogue.

In the clip below, watch as Fox anchor Gregg Jarrett describes "pictures just coming into us" as "huge crowds" that have amassed while Palin is "promoting her new book." The pictures that are supposedly "just coming in" are actually year-old video from the presidential campaign:

For what it's worth, I think this appears to be little more than a momentary disconnect between newsreader and news producer than a conscious attempt to mislead. I am sure that Fox News is more than aware that crowds are mainly gathering today at a mall in Michigan, where Palin is expected to appear, and not at some rally that Palin presided over today. Of course, the fact that Fox was caught manipulating footage in a misleading manner is only going to spur further suspicions when things like this happen.

MSNBC has also been reporting on Palin's book signing all day today. It's not something that Fox is likely to have missed, and it looks a little something like this:

UPDATE: Fox has released a statement:

"This was a production error in which the copy editor changed a script and didn't alert the control room to update the video...There will be an on-air explanation during Happening Now on Thursday."

Mark Silva, writing for the Chicago Tribune's The Swamp blog, reports that "that it's highly like [sic] that serious disciplinary action will be taken for those responsible behind the scenes in the control room. News executives there consider this to have been a sloppy and unnecessary error.'

UPDATE, AGAIN: Fox aired an apology for the video mistake this afternoon:

Look I'm a progressive, but I'm gonna be honest - I have heard plenty of Obama supporters say things that were just as vague and talking-points-ridden as what these people had to say. That's how most people relate to politics. That's why the same country that elected GWB twice could then turn around and vote for Barack Obama in even greater numbers: in general, we just don't understand what the heck is going on.

We understand blatant lies that our eyes see as wrong I must say. FOX is just over the edge with their lies.

Alaskan first has it right. Again the Republicans (or whatever they call themselves now) are not known for their academic knowledge. Too bad they don't google for facts. But still, Sarah Palin is a cartoon character providing comic relief in these distressing times. Go Sarah!!!

Having been in tv news for awhile, at least Fox's excuse after getting caught this time is reasonably plausible.

Of course, having been caught manipulating video on multiple occasions--most recently last week--the explanation holds no water and means nothing.

I think that it is symbolic that Sarah's followers sound exactly like her when they answer questions about what they believe in. They start to cook up a "Gumbo" of talking points that ends in "bringing back" a constitution that was never discontinued. This is the very reason why the framers of the Constitution only wanted educated land owners to have the right to vote. They feared that the "common man" would make a mockery of politics. It happened anyway ....

Kill the elitism, would you? It's ugly and counter-productive. And you shouldn't run around touting the wisdom of the "framers" (who had views on government as divergent as we have today across America) on granting voting rights only to landowners (not "educated", necessarily), considering that was one of the major avenues by which America denied blacks (and even freed blacks!) from their right to vote. Plenty of Obama supporters sound just as stupid when they're asked these questions. What does that mean? It means you should stop generalizing.

Two wrongs don't make a right. The Blind Faith is killing this country. The Jerry Falwell Ignorant are multiplying without a sense of history, truth, fact and science; It has nothing to do with God or even religion - but the "use" of both to validate inane ideas which are represented by the GOP. Education his been relabeled "elitism" by a less than educated American populace and that's what the Republican's want - a dumb constituent that will follow you for their economic agenda, but confusing you on social and moral issues! To shift attention for the "less than articulate fans" waiting for Sarah "I can see Russia from my house" Pailn to President Obama is just a debate ploy - Sarah's a genuinely nice enough woman - but to assume she could be VP is lowering the bar beyond low - it's wrapping it around your head and crushing your skull crazy!

Those two people they interviewed had no idea what Palin's views were on any issue asked about. They kept throwing around the word 'constitution'. Sarah has no idea what the Constitution says. All the guy wanted to do was stoup Sarah when she got there. Notice he didn't bring his wife, just his daughter.

Yeah, I think we've seen enough video manipulation and enough chyrons misrepresenting Republicans as Democrats when they get in trouble to know this isn't a mistake. Maybe in this ONE instance it was, but Fox has a long history of deliberately making "mistakes" that favor the Republican party. At this point any "mistake" has to be taken as deliberate until proven otherwise. This boy has cried wolf too many times.

Production error? and how about, "...while the error was inadvertent, it should not have happened" so called apology from Hannity. Inadvertant, gimme a break. Can you be "directly inadvertant" - referring to the spliced 9/12 and Superbowl of Bafoon's proganda footage?

Today they'll be running colorized 1930's Great Depression footage showing how "Obamy's " socialist policies have forced half the nation to survive by standing in mile long long soup kitchens. Hopefully Stewart will spot this one too. Those pesky FOX's .. gotta keep an eye on 'em every split

Once can be a mistake. Twice in the same week is a suspicious coincidence. And in the time that Fox "News" has been in operation, this is like the umpteen-millionth time they have falsified their data in favor of a theocratic wrong-winger. This is no accident, it is their fk'ng editorial policy to spin every story in favor of the corporatist, and if that isn't enough to make their angle believable, to straight make shi+ up.

Not to mention every time another Publican pinhead gets caught slamming his d!ck in the door, or with his paws in the $-till, the Faux-sNooze chyron labels him a Democrat -- such as Gov Mark Sanford ("D"-South Carolina), Sen Ted Stevens ("D"-Alaska), Rep Mark Foley ("D"-Florida), to name just 3 (proof below).
