Oxfam: Afghans Blame Poverty And Unemployment For War

A report by Oxfam International has found that 70 percent of Afghan's blame the war on poverty and unemployment.

"The Cost of War" report surveyed 704 randomly selected Afghans from across the country. It is being published on the eve of the inauguration in Kabul of incumbent Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

The report paints a grim picture, with Afghan people sick of the near constant conflict that has existed in their country since a communist coup in 1978. The Taliban's violence was not seen as a primary cause of the problems, but instead other deep rooted issues were blamed.

The report also found that 1 in 5 Afghans had been tortured during the conflict, and 1 in 10 had been imprisoned during that time. 75 percent of those surveyed had been forced to leave their homes.
