MEDFORD, N.J. — Police say a man who drove his car into a New Jersey cyclist had been sending a text message about a drug deal.

Authorities say 42-year-old Lisa Granert of Cherry Hill was riding her bike and wearing a reflective vest in Medford after 6 p.m. Monday night.

Police say 28-year-old Robert Sharrer of Pemberton told them he was texting when his vehicle drifted onto the shoulder and crashed into Granert. Police say she suffered head injuries and was flown to a trauma unit. She was in stable condition Tuesday.

Police say Sharrer's text was about a drug deal.

Authorities say they found unauthorized prescription drugs in Sharrer's car and charged him with drug possession. They say he'll also be charged in the collision. Police did not know whether Sharrer had an attorney.

As if texting a priest would have made it any less tragic.

I just saw a near miss of a similar incident . A Jappy girl was on her cell (no bluetooth) while trying to park her car and hit a cyclist...she literally pinned him between the car she was trying to park in front of and her vehicle, all the while chatting and she continued chatting and looked annoyed when she saw the poor guy pinned there. Crazy.

Now if only the dealer was the cyclist, now that would be a story!

Sheesh, even I pull over to text my dealer. Seriously, I'll look for a hydrant as it's usually an open space, pull over, and text my dealer. He couldn't simply find a suitable place to pull over very quickly?

Texting while driving is illegal in NJ. Shouldn't really matter with whom one is texting. They already charged him for Rx drugs he has in his car.

How long before people wake up to the fact that texting is a menace? This man committed assault with a deadly weapon (a car). A few weeks ago I saw a man nearly walk off the curb and right into a moving bus becaase he was texting while walking. Had a stranger not reached out grabbed the man's jacket, he might have been killed. When will all states wake up and make it a really serious crime to text to cell phone while driving. I'm sorry, people, but you and your message are simply not that important. Put your ego away and pay freakin' attention!
