Sliced Bread, The CIA, And Other Things Younger Than Robert Byrd (PHOTOS)

West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd became the longest-serving lawmaker in congressional history today. The Senate paid tribute, and there was some sort of special resolution, but we thought we'd honor the 91-year-old public servant ourselves by pointing out just how old he is.

HP this page is entirely inappropriate. This man has given great service to our country. Shame on you.

He is the perfect example of why we need term limits. Being in Congress should NOT be a career. Those elected serve their one or two terms and then get out and have to live with the stupid laws they passed. No retirement, no benefits and no special treatment. They should have to work for a living instead of kicking back in D.C. and raking in "under the table" money.

You shouldn't be allowed to still shape our country if you're old enough to have co-founded it!!!

And he's older than health care reform. Thank you, Senator Byrd, for hanging around to get the job done for your late friend Teddy Kennedy.

Respect your elders.

I respect his service and the fact that he was able to redeem his past, but I truly believe that we should consider passing a MANDATORY retirement age for our elected officials. I think 75 would ge a good age. My parents are both younger than that and they have been retired for nearly 7 years at this point.

You can't redeem being in the KKK.

You are so right. These people that are in office at such an advanced age can't possibly be tending to many of the job requirements. They simply become a figurehead for their staff and party leadership. I recall going to a dinner event in the late 1980s or early 90s and seeing an aged senator being wheeled out asleep around 5 or 6 pm. I thought at the time....wow, I wonder how out of it he is? I too believe Byrd has at least partially, if not wholely redeemed himself. However, you are right, it is well past his time to step down.

While so many younger pols sold out (including Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer, and countless other "liberal" dems), Byrd courageously voted against the authorization for George Bush to have his illegal "preemptive" bloody occupation of Iraq.

For that, he will always have my respect and gratitude.

Why is 92-year old Byrd venerated while 72-year old John McCain was too old to be president? Byrd is way past lucid and unable to follow complex issues (e.g., 2,000 page health care bill). Why, the guy even needs help putting on his hood and sheet!

Byrd never ran for prez, and McCon is equally past lucid. There's 99 others to dilute Byrd, and we would have been stuck with only the Sainted Sarah.

The only US Senator who had the **COURAGE** to tell the truth about Saddam and his American connections at the height of the "Let's invade Iraq!" madness:

This is something that every American should read. I believe it should be taught IN EVERY SCHOOL.

He has certainly earned the respect of every progressive in the world.

Yes. He gave a great and courageous speech on the floor of Congress that day.
