Daniel Webb Dead: Obese SC Man Died After 8 Months In Home Recliner, Didn't Have Health Insurance

JEFFREY COLLINS   11/19/09 06:51 PM ET   AP

Daniel Webb

COLUMBIA, S.C. — When an ambulance brought Daniel Webb home from the hospital after he hurt his knee in March, paramedics warned the then 550-pound man he probably wouldn't be able to get up from his recliner if they put him there, his wife said.

Webb told them to leave him there anyway. He would sit in that recliner, slowly dying, for the next eight months. Finally, paramedics were called back to his Greenwood home on Wednesday because he was in a lot of pain.

Webb's body was physically stuck to the power recliner and firefighters had to cut him from the chair to take him to the hospital. He died a few hours later, his body covered with sores and a "very bad odor," according to a police report.

Webb, 33, didn't ask for help for all those months, because he was ashamed and didn't have health insurance, said his wife, Ada. He slept and used the bathroom in his chair and she cleaned it every day. The former preacher would post sermons online from the chair, and it wasn't long before he decided he was ready to go home to the Lord, she said.

"After he sat there in that one spot for a week, he was embarrassed. It was like he already knew what was going to happen," Ada Webb said.

Webb's mother was the one who placed the final call to paramedics. Not only did crews have to cut apart the chair, but they had to cut a hole in the wall of the couple's mobile home about 70 miles west of Columbia to get him out. A police report said he weighed about 800 pounds, but his wife said he was closer to 500 pounds.

The hospital told Daniel Webb's wife he died from a heart attack, she said. The coroner's office isn't investigating the death and referred all questions to Greenwood County deputies, who sent their report, but didn't respond to a phone message.

Webb died on the couple's second anniversary. They met four years ago on MySpace, and Ada Webb said she didn't see a man who weighed more than 500 pounds, but instead saw a guy who loved the Lord and had a big heart.

"I had the worst anniversary yesterday I ever had, but I know he had the best one he ever had because he's with Jesus now," she said.

Daniel Webb drove school buses for nearly 15 years, until his weight made it impossible. His health kept getting worse, and Ada Webb said she begged hospital officials to keep him after doctors treated his knee injury in March. But the couple had no way to pay and were sent home.

For his first few weeks home, Daniel Webb was open to the idea of seeing someone. Getting to them was the problem.

"Everybody kept telling us, if you get here, we'll help you. We didn't have no way of getting him up, and nobody was willing to come help us," Ada Webb said. "He just kind of said, 'it's in God's hands' at that point."

Daniel Webb spent the rest of his days playing with his four dogs and talking about religion to other people on the Internet.

"I did all I could for him. He loved me with a passion," his wife said. "The only reason he held on to life here was for his family because he wanted to go home and be with the Lord."

There are a whole lot of nasty comments on this article obviously made by people who know nothing about metabolism. Once your body starts storing fat at a rate that you become obese, dieting usually makes it worse. Your metabolism slows and a greater proportion of glucose is stored as fat, an adaptation to prevent starving. This causes a sharp decrease in energy and the cycle perpetuates. There are many health problems that can start this cycle, such as stress or hypothyroidism, and genetics are a factor. Obesity will continue to be a problem as long as low-cost food is overly refined and "doctored" with fats and sugars to enhance flavor. Many people in this country just cannot afford to eat healthy. We are also force to live sedentary and stressful lives because of our jobs, and have little access to stress and weight reducing exercise programs. It is counterproductive to sling insults at obese people. This energy would be far better spent demanding that our legislators make a real effort to prevent obesity before it starts.

I think the real culprit(s) might be the wife and/or mother who brought this food to him. He surely didn't get up and go out to McDonald's himself and he obviously wasn't dining on soup and salads. If he was immobilized, that would've been the perfect time to be put on a diet he really couldn't do anything about. I wonder how these ladies who professed to love this man can live with themselves knowing they actually played a large part in putting him in the grave?

I care about the little girl going deaf because she didn't have healthcare, I care about the boy who can't get a prosthetic arm. however, this man didn't have to be 800 lbs. there are some things in life that require self control and determination.

I fully realize some people have harder time with weight than others, but just like I had to study much harder to be successful in school than my brother who didn't have to study all, some have to eat healthier and exercise more than others. I could've slacked off and made bad grades, and I would never expect to recieve a 4 year college education paid fully by taxpayers regardless of my grades. getting up to 500 lbs, let alone 800 lbs, is beyond a medical condition, it's irresponsibility. And while I truly am sorry that he had to go like this, had he eaten tomatoes and lettuce instead of burgers and fries, he would have never reached this point hard life and health issues or not.

success in life, be it good health or a good job, is also largely personal responsibility, which we seem to be forgetting about. we will never be able to spoon feed every person who isn't willing to put forth the effort, so I'd rather my tax dollars go to the little girl with hearing problems and the others who are actually trying.

Ah change that headline from "he didn't have health insurance" to "He didn't have HEALTH".

I have a hard time sympathizing with some one who was too greedy to stop eating and too lazy to go out and get some exercise.

We can point fingers at him and his wife, and perhaps they could have altered the way they lived, but anyone who really believes that an injured 500+ lb. man can "pick himself up" literally and emotionally must live under a rock. What was he supposed to do, go for a daily jog? Even if he drastically cut calories, the point was he was confined to a chair from an injury, where his health had little chance of improving. With no assistance in getting to a doctor, he had a death sentence.

We have no idea if he was on government assistance, however we do know that he was sent home and put in a chair, so he did not run up hospital bills he could not afford. Anyone who is saying he was sucking up public money cannot read.

Yes, I agree that people with obesity have a large amount of personal responsibility to change their circumstances. But feeding him veggies was not going to get him the health care he needed to get back to functioning and maybe on the way back to health. Obesity is an illness, and needs treatment, not ridicule.

It seems an awful lot of us just hope those that aren't thin up and die, and get out of our awareness. It's much more convenient that way, isn't it.
04:36 PM on 11/20/2009
This isn't news - this is common American behavior - 'God' is responsible for my health meant this man and his wife had no incentive to change their behavior - can we focus on people who are willing to work at being healthy? who have some potential to benefit from health care? all the electronic records in the world, all the reform legislation passed will not change a large part of our population - addiction to food, tobacco, alcohol will continue to shorten lives and cost our nation billions -

Obesity is increasing exponentially ....i only hope the new drugs coming to market...can help these people...help all of us......or this "dysfunction" alone will destroy our ability to provide proper medical insurance.....

Perhaps obesity is caused by a virus, and the virus is airborne?

while i agree with your sentiment, i would argue against the notion that we need drugs to treat obesity. what we need is a move away from the agricultural-industrial-complex that packs our stores with highly processes foods, massive amounts of corn syrups, soda-pops, and a host of other foods that cause both obesity and a myriad of other health problems. and then there is the massive consumption of meat in this nation. not to mention the fact that our nations pass-time is the TV.

fighting obesity begins at home. fresh food and modest exercise is the solution not yet another drug produced by the pharmaceutical-industrial-complex that pollutes our bodies and our planets waters and empties our pocketbooks.

this is the reason the food industry need even more regulation!

What??? Do you really think regulation would have helped this person lose weight? Classic lefty lunacy

Exactly what kind of "regulations" are you suggesting?

How about not stuffing our livestock full of hormones and antibiotics. Our farming practices are insanely unhealthy.
01:14 AM on 11/21/2009
Stop stuffing livestock and poultry full of corn feeds designed to fatten them up and produce the most meat and stick to the old natural breeds that can walk around and live a life before slaughter. Use organic sweeteners like blackstrap molasses, maple syrup, or a less refined "sugar in the raw" and end the overuse of corn syrup as a sweetener. Require anything called JUICE to be made from the actual JUICE of the fruit as claimed instead of each year finding a way to make a greater percentage of the liquid out of pure corn syrup and artificial flavors. You know the drill... look at Food, Inc. or the book Fast Food Nation if you want to learn more about the food industry in this country and how it poisons us.

And wow.. this is a grotesque Edgar Allan Poe like story. Imagine someone who is a preacher having no community or congregation able and willing to help with a person who is convalescent! There were was no organized group of men who would volunteer to go over and help his wife care for him in response to a serious knee problem compounded by extreme obesity. Sure we may know what causes overweight but once you get into a spiral where weight becomes extreme and compounded by disability then that person needs help just as they would if they had been in perfectly good health and then got into a car accident.

While I support public funding for health care - honestly - this is the type of issue that makes me to have some reservations. While yes, everyone should have health care - I also believe that if my tax dollars are going to go to health care to cover everyone - then those who take public health care have to at least TRY to stay healthy. I am not talking about being fanatical - but not weighing 500+ pounds is a place to start.

And by the way - if he was stuck in the chair - how did he get the food???

Yes, it was this man's mission to become obese so you would have to pay for his insurance.
04:36 PM on 11/20/2009
It may not have been his mission, but it was his fault. He could have prevented his own d.eath.
12:30 PM on 11/21/2009
It might not be a smokers goal to get lung cancer, but should we pay for their resulting disease even though they had significant warning?
04:39 PM on 11/20/2009
Several people who come from countries that have universal single payer health care say that one of the results of their system is that people take better care of themselves because they don't want to be responsible for wasting society's resources. It's an odd thing, but if we take care of people who need help, they tend to want to take care of us in return.
04:45 PM on 11/20/2009
LMAO! You really believe people who are dependent on the government are concerned about wasting society's resources. That's the best one I heard in a long time.
05:15 PM on 11/20/2009
You never got very close to a public housing project, did you?
04:11 PM on 11/20/2009
I'm overweight. I know how hard it is to lose weight and keep it off. I know how easy it is to get discouraged and develop an "I don't care anymore" attitude. I know what it's like to have food cravings you can't seem to ignore. That all said, I find it sad that someone in this man's situation had to face all of these things while surrounded by enablers. When you reach a point where you can no longer get out of bed or off the couch, then someone has to bring you the food and drink that you require. And bring it they did. I am thankful that I am surrounded by people who refuse to enable my behavior, who encourage me to get to the gym everyday for a good workout, who question why I am eating too much, and applaud me when I make good food choices. Today, I work with a trainer, get to the gym 6x a week, and keep a log of everything that goes into my mouth (including a stick of gum). I have people who hold me accountable rather than enable me. I would be lost without them. Where was this man's support group?
05:04 PM on 11/20/2009
At his funeral.

Indeed.
