Photoshopping is a part of creating any magazine cover, but usually it doesn't render the subject an anatomical wonder. Demi Moore, 47, covers the December W in a gold Balmain leotard. Yes she appears impossibly thin, but moreover, there seems to be a chunk missing from her left hip where you'd expect a more contiguous line would connect hip to thigh beneath that pelvic drapery.

A W spokesperson tells Jezebel.com the magazine "did not do anything unusual or out of the ordinary on Demi Moore for the photo on the cover of W. Demi is an extraordinary beautiful woman and we feel our cover reflects that." She doesn't say whether Photoshopping women within an inch of their life is unusual.

Demi also denies she fell victim to a botched Photoshop job.

"Here is the original image people my hips were not touched don't let these people bullshit you!" she tweeted Thursday afternoon, along with an "original image" that matches the cover image. She followed up with several tweets talking about her skinniness and how flattering the shoot was:

"Demi shouldn't be on the defensive over someone else's mistakes. She's a beautiful woman who needs no help from Photoshop," said fashion photographer Anthony Citrano, who posted a commentary and high-res image here. "It's too bad W or the photogs won't step up and take some responsibility."

Quick Poll

Why are people so upset over this? Photoshopped or not? Why get upset over it? It doesn't effect your life, does it?
04:42 PM on 02/10/2010
It's the angle of the pose - her hip is slightly back, but when you see the photograph, your eye thinks she's standing straight forward. Yes, it's photoshopped to airbrush her skin, etc., but I don't think they replaced her hip.

I manipulate photos all day long...several steps taken to make the skin flawless...looks like the used the clone tool with the origin starting at the elbow... lol
07:26 PM on 12/22/2009
photoshop, not photoshop... it doesnt matter. She is far too thin and puts tremendous pressure on our young girls who will now try to look like her. It is unhealthy.
07:34 PM on 02/03/2010
She's pretty thin but not to the point where it's unhealthy. She just looks like she works out a lot, or runs or something. There's the difference between the thin and muscled look and the frail thin look that supermodels have. But I suppose to make everybody happy these days we should have glamour shots of obese women on covers...There are way more obese young girls than there are abnormally thin, just sayin....Obesity without a medical condition that accounts for it is just as unnatural as extreme thinness.

I cant believe how 'furious' people are over this picture.. Everyone ready to say 'no way!' or 'this is fake!' but if you just examine the photo you can see that sure - its probably retouched to make her skin look flawless, etc.. but her hip hasnt been moved. Notice - her left leg is in front of her right leg, she is pushing out her right hip. Unless you think they photoshopped the pic so her left leg looks bigger than her right leg.. hah. I challenge you.. (if you are in relatively good shape) go stand in the mirror and get in that pose, or something similar. Amazing, your thigh wont be exactly lined up with your hip! In fact your thigh will look to be outside of your hip line by quite a bit... Obviously her thigh and hip wont be "In line". They are covering up about 8 inches where the hip meets the thigh, so you don't see the transition.

One thing - its obvious magazine covers are photoshopped in many ways.. They are illusions to make people look unworldly beautiful. That is why women and some men wear makeup.. Why is anyone even arguing about this?

Please make her some food, Ashton.

Don't worry haters - someday Demi might be in a wheelchair on dialysis - and she will still be HOT!

You just don't get it. The woman is just another air head, greedy, celebrity and it has nothing to do with her. It is all about the B$ marketing mass media machine. The lies, deceits and fraud that are a normal part of it's every day operation. It is about mocking the celebrity engine, that has all of it's images photo shopped, all it's interviews pre-arranged rehearsed and the answered by public relation experts with the celebrity acting the role and about the false image created to make the general public feel sufficiently inadequate that they need to 'buy' there way out of their problems, you know, "live the lie, buy, buy, buy".

Wow, that's a really crappy photoshop. Can't believe they put that on the cover of W. And I can't believe I'm commenting on this. And I can't believe I'm not getting on with my Christmas preparations - someone help!!

This image is not photoshopped nearly to the extent that many of you wish it had been. It has had some minor alterations (color levels and histogram stuff, and maybe some smoothing here and there) but nothing drastic like the replacement or scaling of body parts. Thats just her natural hip creating a natural dip because of the way she is standing.

This article isn't based off of someone who made a photoshop error. Its based on someone who doesn't really know what photoshop work really is and is predisposed to thinking every little inconsistency must be an act of manipulation. The person to blame in this story isn't the photoshopper, but rather the amateur who wrote the original article and those who choose to propagate or scavenge of this story for some internet views.

What's a micro-bio?

I am a photoshopper -- I agree with you. It is the angle of her hips in that pose PLUS the optical illusion brought on by the type at the bottom.

BTW, pretty model.

It's the way she's standing....
I'm 46 and have the same build as her's and she's just standing with her right hip out....
you can tell by her arm, waist, and position....she should post another pic in the same position without the sash/scarf....

So because you're 47 you are suppose to look like an aged peach..... or else you're photoshopped?
10:58 AM on 12/18/2009
Apparently.

I don't think it was shopped. It does look off, but it looks more her stance and that horrible out fit.
02:39 PM on 12/19/2009
No. It's because, even without zooming in, you can see that the hip in question is much farther in towards the body than the leg below the material below the same hip. Ridiculous! I'd fire the person responsible for such a mistake.

I miss the good ol days when she would whip off her clothes in every movie she did. And this is a botched photoshop job.

It seems entirely plausible to me that the reason her hips look like that is that she twisted them slightly. That is a very common pose to make the curves on one side more pronounced.

I can't imagine her caring what some of those nits think. Jealousy is a terrible thing.

Your micro-bio did not meet our guidelines.

If that's her real body line, then she isn't extremely beautiful, she's extremely deformed!
05:58 PM on 12/17/2009
Hardly. Not all of us have fat hips. Some of us were born thin with slim hips and (ahem) perfect bods. It's called "an ideal body". She works out, she takes care of herself, she is Beauty incarnate. That's what a beautiful, slim-hipped woman looks like. Jealous?
11:57 PM on 12/17/2009
There's no way you can connect the thigh with the hip in that photo that makes any sense. It was photo-shopped.
09:08 PM on 12/17/2009
Demi is gorgeous!

If she was retouched, why didn't the photoshop gods do a better job. Do you really think that they would make her look worse?

FYI, that part of the body has a natural indentation. Hips are not a smooth curve, if you think they are, your looking at photoshopped bodies.
