Lady Gaga Performs At 2005 NYU Talent Show (VIDEO)

What's Your Reaction?

Before she was Gaga, she was Stefani Germanotta, a dark-haired music student at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts who happened to sing and play the piano really well. She never did graduate, as bigger things came along.

Here young Stefani, unencumbered by ten-inch shoes, face lace or pyrotechnic breasts, performs two original pieces for the university's talent show.

Gaga is AMAZING !! She is a self made icon at 23. You can hear parts of poker face and similar chords/style in her performance. You can SEE the talent just waiting to bust out.

To the haters, lets break it down:
Can she play piano like Franz Liszt or van Cliburn? no. she's still better than 98% of piano players. Can she sing like like Maria Callas or S Brightman? no. she's still better than 98% of singers. marketing- the local pizza place, exxonmobil, cruiselines all need to market. In her chosen field, one of the world's most competitive, she has marketed herself better than everyone, and 99.999% of the companies in the world. She writes damn good pop songs, and gives a helluva performance.
Some may not like her style or her product, to each his/her own. But give the girl her due.

I watched both videos, before and after and imo I really liked her before she added all the heels, lace and plastic, but her musical style has changed to. I'll take the stripped down version any day.

It's refreshing. She is weird, but I'll take her over the over-manufactured and pity seeking Rihanna or the the Pole danc ing Miley Cyrus any day.

I started a band (I'm out of it at this point) that now has a singer that's got a stronger and better voice than Stefani and is a also great performer on the guitar.

The singer in my band is not interested in dressing up and doing ridiculous glam-rock.

She, and the band, will be playing small bars with 14 people in it for as long as they stick with it because, while they have talent, they don't have the ambition of chairisma. Truth is, hundreds of thousands of people have musical talent and they're out there performing and having a good time at it. Check out your local music scene and you'll be surprised. Doesn't matter where you live. Somebody is out there doing impressive work and hardly anybody is aware of it.

Stefani wanted to go bigger and was smart enough to know how to manufacture entertainment. I just watched her on MTV's live stage channel and she's brininging it, the music and the performance.

Her clip was followed by the Black Eyed Peas and they were a ridiculous joke. Cliche' stage pressence and not one note sung on pitch...and this with an auto tune cranked to 11.

Commercial success is a challenging thing. Some earn it, some get lucky. At any rate, I applaud Stefani for making it.

Ms. Germanotta is more talented than a lot of people on the pop scene... which is actually a little sad. But fuzzynormal is right, never forget your local music scene! Encouraging indie artists and finding great new music not filtered through a big record company is great! Good luck to your friends, I hope they find success in whatever vein they prefer.

I have met some of the most talented people in the world playing in jazz and blues clubs. Support your local talent.

She will, eventually, shed her Gaga personality go natural and we will go 'OMG how fresh and pure; she's so amazing'. Mark my words.

An astute observation.

I like this singer and I like Christina Aguilara too. Who needs all the make up and costumes? I guess some people need it. They don't and I don't.
You should listen to Christina's version of John Lennon's Mother. OMG. It's on the album of covers done for a Darfur benefit album.

Great talent. I love Christina Aguilera too.

Not my cup of tea but it worked for her. Talent isn't enough these days. You have to have "presence" what ever that is.
Bucket-Of-Love   11:02 PM on 12/07/2009
Talent is not much required these days. Only a fraction of a percent of those produced have actual talent.

Good music will always stand on its own merit. Fame on the other hand......is fickle. Stephanie Germanotta was very smart and saavy creating Lady GaGa. Who would want to be stuck between a bunch of wanna be adult contemporary artists when you can out shine them all.

She cut her own path and its obviously paid off for her.

A truly remarkable artist. Beautiful voice and an incredible performer. Her new album is light-years ahead of any pop music coming out right now. I've got a lot of friends that are self professed music snobs and they're obsessed with the new album. I absolutely cannot wait to see her at Radio City in January.

I am a self-professed music snob and I wish I had half the musical talent this woman has, and I am no cabbage-ear! :)
GreatNews27   03:25 PM on 11/20/2009
Talent just isn't enough these days. Pity.

I can't stand the Lady Gaga thing but now I see why she did it. While her voice is okay, there are a million singer/songwriters just like her - never would she get a record deal without the gimmick.
Bucket-Of-Love   11:04 PM on 12/07/2009
Agree. Cookie-cutter writing and singing.
