LOS ANGELES — Vampires and werewolves have vanquished a dark knight. "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" took in $72.7 million in its first day to break the single day domestic box office record previously held by "The Dark Knight," which had a $67.2 million opening day last year.

The Friday haul for the "Twilight" sequel includes a record $26.3 million from midnight screenings alone.

If "New Moon" maintains its pace, it might have a shot at the all-time best opening weekend record of $158.4 million, also held by "The Dark Knight."

"New Moon" continues the story of teen romance between a girl and a vampire (Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson), with the sequel adding a love triangle with a teen werewolf (Taylor Lautner).

Is anyone really that surprised by this? The Twilight series is painfully popular and has lots of young, pretty, (undead) people in it...

Vampires don't sparkle.

It never mattered how New Moon did with the critics. Much like the undead, nothing is gonna kill this beast until its made a major (financial) impact...

This was a bad movie. Too long. I feel this one will go down fast. These kids can not act. Do not go, save your money.

You know what I love? That everyone here trashing this "main stream dribble" still took the time to look at the article and post a comment! I also enjoy the fact that time and again I read posts about how women are just jealous when they trash beautiful women, but I sure do notice quite a few men trashing Robert Pattinson. Last time I checked this was fictional entertainment. And for the record I did see the movie and there was just as many men as women and adults as teenagers at the showing. My suggestion: If you don't like it don't see it.

Sarah Palin. John and Kate plus 8. New Moon.

Good job, America.

the books are about a teenage girl -- they are written for teenage girls.
anyone who is NOT a teenage girl probably won't like the books or the movies
(unless they are a mom with a teenage girl).

I don't hear anyone bit.ching about all the horror/snuff films that are being made to
appeal to teenage boys.

Why is that, I wonder?

Kids have too much money and I need some of it. I wonder if I can come up with a more poser kind of Skecher.

It's simple math. Appeal to tween girls a book about cultured vampires and tween love. Most mothers will read the books to see what their daughters are getting into. It becomes a type of bonding experience and they rack in the dough on the movies and books.

My daughter and I were going to eat Mexican and then go and have a "girls night out."

That's all there is to it. The magical money magnet.

Coming back from the matinee today, my nephew wanted to "crush" the producers, writers, director and the theater manager.

When oh when will the substandard series just go away??? It absolutely plays to the lowest common denominator. I watched the first movie, because I have always been a huge vampire movie fan, but let me tell you, after I watched it I felt like I lost brain cells. I was truly pissed I wasted my time on such a horribly written and acted movie. I would never spend another dime supporting any of the trash thats being shoved down our teenage girls throat. I would hope if I had a daughter she would be far too smart to get sucked in. This is a movie about sullen, mopey, boring teenagers. I can get that without going to the movies

The books are written towards young adults and girls.

No way I will ever watch any of the movies or waste my time reading the books.

the books may be written towards young girls, but I know alot of middle aged women who are WAY too excited about this crap. They are all partnerless, divorced, sad women, who are OBSESSED with these sad gay emo sparkly twits.

Anne Rice ruined vampires for most of them.
