John Mayer: 'I Should Be Having Sex With More Girls'

"I should be having sex with more girls." This is what John Mayer concluded, using slightly more colorful language, last Sunday night at his anonymously modern apartment in SoHo.

So begins a New York Times piece on John Mayer and his self-conscious struggle to be a public figure with a private life. Last week the singer complained about how the media's obsession with his love life overshadows his music, and now he tells the NYT it is also keeping him from getting laid.

"It's crazy to me that in my head, that being 32 and dating women is going to get me in trouble," he said, talking faster as he went along. "I can't even explain to you how terrible that feels, that I equate dating a woman with punishment, shame, guilt, disappointment, reproach, reprimand, persecution. It's a nightmare."

It's hard to imagine Mayer has any trouble landing women with public declarations such as this, during a recent show in Brooklyn:

"They say I'm a womanizer," he complained. "I say I haven't met enough women."

The crowd cheered. Shrieked, really. Maybe things weren't so bad after all.

"Cute girl," Mr. Mayer said, pointing into the sea of eager faces. "Cute girl. Cute girl. Kuh-yoot girl."

Mayer has dated Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jessica Simpson and most recently Jennifer Aniston, with whom he remains friendly.

His Twitter page is full of double entendres and juvenile sex jokes such as "Toronto, I am inside you!!!" and "I ended up fucking the AT&T representative. But still... no texts?"

Then there are the self-deprecating references to his romantic floundering that don't make much sense but suggest he wants to be more than a serial lothario: "I'm the George W. Bush of love: I may not have anything to show for myself now, but history will prove me a hero."

Mayer's fourth album, "Battle Studies," which includes lyrics such as 'made a bad name for my game around town' and a duet with Taylor Swift about love, was released Tuesday.
