WATCH:

FROM THE POOL REPORT:

The Obamas and the Indian prime minister and first lady pose for the official photo:

Pool was brought into the Grand Foyer at 7:17 p.m., after Prime Minister Singh and his wife, Gursharan Kaur arrived and were greeted by POTUS and FLOTUS on the North Portico (this was open press).

As pool waited in the Grand Foyer, the Marine Orchestra filled the room with music, including John Rutter's Suite for Strings (the first one) and a number called Fascinatin Rhythm, which sounded it had a touch of New Orleans in it.

Your pooler could hear laughter and chatter coming from at the top of the Grand Staircase - although not enough to make out what anyone said. A fire burned in a fireplace in the Green Room. White House staff and Secret Service were shuttling around in tuxedos and floor-length ball gowns.

Speaking of which, FLOTUS is wearing a strapless, floor-length, champagne-colored gown with silver detail by designer Indian-born designer Naeem Khan. Her hair is swept back and she is also wearing a bunch of churis, traditional sparkly Indian bangle bracelets. Kaur was wearing a black sari with red and gold trim.

At 7:37 p.m., some administration officials made their way down the Grand Staircase. Secretary Clinton was first, accompanied by someone your pooler did not recognize, following behind were Gen. Jim Jones, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden - who is wearing a gown by Lebanese designer Reem Acra - and Ambassador Rice, Ambassador Timothy Roemer. They all two-by-two walked into the Green Room.

Around 7:45 p.m. POTUS, FLOTUS, Singh and Kaur made their way down the red carpet lining Cross Hall. They came from the west side. The four of them stood in front of the doors to the Blue Room - from right to left: POTUS, Singh, FLOTUS, Kaur. POTUS and FLOTUS flashed broad smiles as the cameras rolled and photographers clicked, while Singh and Kaur were more plain-faced. They four of them then turned and entered the Blue Room.

Pool is now holding in the press file, waiting to be taken to the tent for toasts.

Mrs. Obama's gown is lovely and regal. I like it better than the Inaugural Ball gown.

Mr. Singh looks like he's checking out her bubbies in the second shot. I don't blame him, she looks absolutely amazing. The color of the dress is so becoming, and the fit is right on.

Think Michelle is beautiful and it is a nice dress, however, in the first picture she is standing two steps ahead of the Guest of Honor. It is like she is saying 'Here i am! See my dress! Am I not fabulous?' Less fashion piece and more 1st Lady hostess pleaseI Altogether, i though a lot of other people dressed with a lot more dignity than she did. A state dinner is not the place for a 1st lady to be calling attention to herself.

The dress is very pretty but the fit is wrong. The bodice should fit without the folds of skin all around it. It is very important to get the fit of the bodice in a sleeveless dress perfect. The whole dress is also too tight. Where is the tailor? Does the White House have a tailor?

Actually the fit was just right, but I guess some people have to find SOMETHING to criticize.

An absolutely fabulous dress choice by the FLOTUS. The gold shade brought out her skin tones to great advantage and the sumptous fabric and chiffon wrap struck all the right notes in terms of reflecting the uniqueness of Indian fabrics and style. About 18 months ago, I visited India for the first time and was absolutely blown away by the fabrics there, in terms of both color (rich and every shade in the rainbow) and texture. I'm almost sure too that her wrap was the designer's homage to the dupatta, which women in India and Pakistan commonly wear over their hair, whether with a salwar kameez or a sari.
And BTW--kudoes to Mrs. Obama for *not* wearing a sari. IMO, very few western women can pull off that look unless they have extraordinary confidence and personal style.

Everyone agree how fabulous Michelle is, but also how smart showing how we honor her guests by
thinking of all the big and little things about them and the country they represent: the colors, the tens,
the clothes, the food (vegetarian), the significance of the tent is being ignored by people...that in other parts of the country dining under the stars is part of their culture...wouldn't you be honored if someone invites you to their house and rmeember all the important things, little they may be, about you? The
President must be sooo proud of his brilliant wife....I am.
